The Magicians: Will You Play with Me? (2018)
A setup for the continuation
The episode isn't anything special and S3 absolutely has much better ones. We get a humongous cliffhanger and it is glaringly obvious the point of this episode if to set the stage for the continuation. The pacing picks up again and while we get some things (too quickly) resolved, we also get a ton of new developments and outright brand new, unexplained stuff. This is only getting a good ratings with the foresight that there's more of the series and it didn't end / get cancelled.
My bigger problem with this episode is that the villain is just too hateable and unredeemable. And that after the writers have already proven that they can write a good antagonist, but this isn't it. All we feel for this one is pure disgust and hatered, combined with the cliffhanger it leaves you more frustrated than eager to watch more. I get what they're setting up to, but the way they went about the it here is very one-dimensonal.
House of the Dragon: The Princess and the Queen (2022)
What's even happening and why do should I care
Oh, a Targaryen is giving birth. The queen wants to see it? Ah, I guess it's *another* time jump and Rhaenyra is queen after her father collapsed and died last episode. No wait, that's Rhaenyra giving birth actually, she's been recast by an actress that looks nothing like her apart from the fact she's a woman and has white hair.
We learn the kids are bastards. Must be Criston's kids, right? Wrong, they're from some random new guy.
Daemon is back, he hasn't aged a day and Laena is now older than him. He's also settled down and just wants to read books. Also lots of meaningless filler and dragon CGI while the show allegedly has zero time to spare and has to make years long jumps between episodes.
Some stuff happens, nobody really cares because the show just dropped us 10 years in the future without explaining anything after a cliffhanger the episode before. Wow, yet another birth scene.
Now there's a fire? The cuts are quick and the scenes are dark, you'll be lucky if you can even tell which castle the fire's taking place at. Rhaenyra's new lover is dead in the fire, but we don't really care because we've seen him for like 5 minutes thus far.
It's like they too everything that was wrong with GOT S8 and said "we can do even worse".
Vikings: The Best Laid Plans (2020)
Utterly confusing
What is even going on in this episode? The battle scenes are one of the most unorganized moments of television I've watched in the recent years. Bjorn gets stabbed, but I'm not even sure if he's actually dead or if it's just another vision or "dream" scene.
I'm getting strong GOT S8 vibes from the last few episodes.
