Wagon Train: The Will Santee Story (1961)
Southern Lost Cause hypocrisy
An otherwise good storyline ruined by adding the perpetuated Southern "lost cause" fantasies.
The Confederate sympathizers actually say "blind prejudice" is an awful thing. Referring to themselves being discriminated against in Ohio for their support for slavery.
Disgusting.
The storyline didn't need it. There was good acting and timely drama. Especially for the time of the episode.
I also cannot understand why a whole family is condemned for the actions of someone in their family. I understand the shame and wanting not to be associated with the criminal, but the reactions by the girlfriends father is over the top.
Mona Lisa Smile (2003)
Heh
The comment "One young woman tried to tell me it wasn't just about Wellesley; they were depicting the 50s in general. But the fact is the 50s in general were not that dismal!" from lwhaley shows just how out of touch some people are even today.
We don't have many settings like Mona Lisa depicts, but some people are still the same. The elite always think things aren't so bad, because they live in their own little worlds. The lynchings, segregation, McCarthyism and wars were just the good Ole days to them.
MLS, even if a somewhat weak direction, depicts the stifling atmosphere prevalent during the 50's. Despite what the elite want us to believe.
