Evil: The Demon of the Road (2022)
Badass Episode
This truly was one of the best episodes of the series. We've all read about the urban legends of stretches of haunted highways. It was interesting to see the connection between the supernatural and the cult of fame/attention seeking. They both can bring evil. I love the new attitudes of both Kristen and Ben. Ben is leaning on his science background and Kristen into her own empowerment. I love the girl power vibe.
I have an observation about some of the low ratings and comments about this being a "woke" episode. If you don't like to see or think about strong women, then stop watching and whining. Watch some macho trucker reality show if that's your speed. We have enough respect not to leave negative comments about the constant barrage of themes about women needing men to rescue them. Have enough respect not to ridicule female empowerment.
Colin in Black and White (2021)
Hate the message, kill the messenger.....
...is exactly what people are doing who are giving this series bad reviews. It's a good solid series with an important message. The Black experience is very different from the White experience of growing up in America. For decades, people who look like me only wanted to talk about race with their "whites only" bathrooms and racial slurs. Now, when Black folk are willing to share their experiences, suddenly white folks don't want to talk about race. Now they want everybody to be "color blind". We should be interested and open minded when learning about the struggles of others. Knowledge makes us better people. I encourage you to give this a chance. Ava Duvernay hits another home run with this bold docudrama. Jaden Michael's performance as young Colin Kaepernick is impressive. My only negative critique is that the commentary by Kaep, although informative, made the story a little disjointed at times. Ignore the closed minded remarks and ratings. This one is well worth your time.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Incredible Storytelling and Acting
I watched the commentary about the series before I saw the show, so I knew what to expect. It's an interesting way to portray the events leading up to the raid on Harper's Ferry, WV. I grew up near Harpers Ferry, so I'm pretty familiar with the historical significance. The negative comments are coming from certain types of viewers who seem to think that John Brown is a character that the writers made up to make some sort of political statement. It might surprise them to learn that Brown's raid was one of the sparks that fueled the beginning of the Civil War. Slavers were terrified that more slave insurrections were imminent. However could southerners survive without their blood money?
The underlying events are historical but some of the characters are fictional. The addition of Little Onion to the story is genius. Ethan Hawke, as John Brown hits his usual home run. There is something in this series for everybody. Heartfelt emotional scenes seamlessly transition to action scenes of violence and anger. I've seen two episodes and am excited to watch the rest of the season.
Roswell, New Mexico (2019)
Give it a chance.
I'm a huge fan of the original series. I think I actually like these characters better. They're much more representative of what a group of people from New Mexico would be like. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out if this is actually 10 years later or if the original storyline has just changed. I was under the impression that everybody lived happily ever after and that Liz knew everything. Now she appears to be clueless as to the identity of the aliens. I wonder if they'll address this in some way. Either way, I like this show already.
I'd also like to comment to people making this about politics. It's a TV show, not a political rally. I wish that closed minds came with closed mouths. If you don't care to watch people who are different from you, turn it off. Don't give horrible reviews. Let a show be rated on its own merits rather than your politics. Just sayin.
