I Am David (2003)

absolutely beautiful

Warning: Spoilers
i can't believe that i've never heard of this film! this movie is by far the most excellent movie i have seen!!!--EVER. i was worried that this would be a hallmark type film. the preview seemed too good, too wholesome, and the rating of PG almost turned me away. the boy was such a perfect cast. everything that he did was believable. his attempt at a smile, was so precious. i could feel the tension that was his life build up through his acting, the flashback scenes, and the interactions between characters. the music was beautiful as well. the choir that sang in the church towards the end of the movie was phenomenal. it was such a beautiful moment. perfect music to lead up to the story's climactic twist. i honestly felt like every hair on my body was going to fly out of my skin. i had chills for the last minutes of the film.

there were a couple things i didn't like about the movie: before he went to save the girl, maria, from the burning barn, he threw his bag out of the way. when he awoke a day later in the mansion, he acknowledged that he didn't have it--i dunno, i guess as long as it was acknowledged, it wasn't necessary to see him retrieve it later. um, why was the girl tied up in the barn? and last, i expected a bigger, better, more emotional homecoming for David. i understand how solemn it was supposed to be, but she could have at least jogged towards him, or hugged him a little tighter. it seemed more like they were third cousins than mother and son.

"True" entertainment; Bland for the same fact.

There are a few reasons that made this a movie worth seeing. There were real true character interactions. People acted, for the most part, the way they would in real life. I loved that Topher's character, Carter, had a background. Not so much that would make him boring, but enough to know where he came from. He had depth. I felt like he could be any of my guy friends in a few years struggling to cope with their career choices. Dennis Quaid, or Dan, was likable and easy to relate to as well. He could be any of my friend's fathers, dealing with the business world and the idea of being easily replaced. Scarlett, Alex in the movie, as said before of the other characters, could be me pursuing an education.

There was nothing remarkable about this movie, other than the guy didn't end up with the girl, but the man did get his job back. So in conclusion I'd say that it was cute because of the cast--they're lovable. The story, however, was less than riveting. I mean, what was the point of telling the middle-upper class' story? Nobody really cares. I guess I had expected to see the typical romantic comedy/drama, and was happy with that idea. I ended up with a realistic portrayal of a family's life along with a look into the business world.

With this said, I think I should try to change my initial vote of a seven and change it to a 6. Not so great.
