Becoming Abi (2022)
Meh...
Classic tale of "I have money so I can make my own series and cast myself as the star since I am paying for it".
Who start a series with spoilers???
I am not going to lie, this story had a lot of great potentials owing to the fact that it was focus on social media tech as it emerges in our recent world which have never been centred in a Nigerian story. Overall, the character development was very poor, the story arc was almost linear, terrible subplots which was a huge mistake considering the calibre of actors playing supporting roles.
They highs were the beautiful editing and colouring, Akah, Stan Nze and Big Mummy.
I wanted more.
The American King (2020)
My advice... Burn the hard copy
Like no one should remember this as an actual film that was made. 3.3million dollar in the drain, mtcheew. This thing (its an insult to call it a film) is not worthy of a review so no not gonna waste my time.
Raised by Wolves (2020)
A New Level of Weird, down right Freaky
I've seen my fair share of Weird shows over the years but Raised by Wolves went the extra mile and created a show so weird it literally makes no sense. This storyline was extremely ambitious and would seem like something written in a state of a deep and disturbing trauma because no sane person would have put something this outrageous together. It crosses every single line of common sense.
The beautiful thing is that it was done by HBO and over the years they have taken the lead in making ground breaking shows that many at times conflict with reality.
Aesthetically Raised by Wolves was magnificently done, it's dim sea green colouring created the perfect canvas to tell this story. The production designer was almost perfect but a bit flawed. The acting, properly delivered by a beautiful crop of actors who may have been making their marks and impressions for the first time. It also produced good audio and visual qualities.
I'm not sure I'm keen on seeing the next season of this show but I must also say that the storyline had so many plot holes the size of a continent.
Dakan (1997)
The Awesomeness of a Timeless Piece
I can only imagine what it would have been like to make such a movie in Africa 25 years (1997) ago. Stories such as this are often never told in Africa and its just amazing how close to real life this cuts
This film explores the major concepts of sexuality as seen in Africa, from the unconscious euphoria of a young love, to public perception, to its relation to African spirituality to parental concerns and rejection, to an acquired state of shame wrapped in denial and then finally the confrontation of the truth of one's sexuality.
The characters' journey is captured with an amazing composition, in a way that shows its beauty but also reflect their pain and struggles. From urban scenery to beaches and waterfalls, it is set to showcase the rich earthly heritage of the people who's story it tells.
The beauty of story telling lies in the fact that a story should remain Timeless and relevant no matter the Era it is told from or told to and for decades to come, this film will remain relevant.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
Quite off the Big Mark
In Maleficent's Voice "I must say, I found this quite rather distressing, not meeting my expectations"
So first off let's start with the good. Robert did yet another amazing job pulling this together. Great CGI, outstanding cenimatography, incredible costumes, fascinating Acting (I mean the definition of an actress was the Lead) and of course a trilling assemblage.
But my major problem with this Fantasy marvel is indeed with the story and as a writer I understand how elusive it can be to craft an entire sequel without an actual source material for adaptation but based off already existing characters and an exhausted tale. The result is always a mount full of plot holes, new character development constraints and a risk to undo a good job.
I was literally excited to see my all time favorite hero-villain only rivalled by the Dark Knight in all her glory and insanely gripping one liners but I just couldn't get my head off how bad the story was. I was also excited to see Candall played by the prolific Chiwetel who could match Maleficent's Evil for Evil only for the character to be underdeveloped and killed off cheaply.
If this ever returns for a third installment, please do better.
The Sun Is Also a Star (2019)
Disappointing... That's all I'll call it
As a big fan of Zozo (Yara) from Black-ish and of course Grown-ish I just couldn't wait to see her interpret another role I'll probably fall in love with and iconize her for but needless to say that this was catastrophic disaster.
I know it's probably based on a bestseller book, but heck I haven't seen a romcom this boring and stupidly pointless. Any sane person knows not to dabble with phenomenons that can't be theoretically proven but this bunch thought it wise to scientifically prove Love. Yeah you read that right.
I haven't been this bored with a movie in recent times, I've never seen a casting this bad. I mean the lead characters had ZERO chemistry what so ever it was painful to watch. I love Yara but please someone tell her to quickly do an acting course before she looses all that spotlight from ABC.
Don't get me started on the cinematography and directing. I saw shot that would probably trigger a faux panic attack. Then the directionless collection of Jamaican songs that added nothing to the plot as a whole was trouble to my ears.
Seriously won't recommend this for anyone
Boomerang (2019)
It just wasn't Enough
We're out here searching for the next show to go on an adventure with and to fall in love with characters we've never met but are all too familiar but Boomerang wasn't that show.
I mean it is interesting enough to keep you watching till the last episode but that's how far it comes. It is sad because it already had a rich and very familiar background (talking about the 1992 movie it was spinned from) it could have leverage on but it missed that mark completely.
The characters were a beautiful mix and showed great promise for a modern cast but they were written too shallow to be memorable.
Generally the show lacked intrigue, suspense, conflicts and resolutions deep enough to matter.
Insatiable (2018)
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
When I first saw the pilot I was hopeful that this could actually be worthwhile. I mean a story of an overweight girl who hits rock bottom, loses weight by chance and wants to be coached for pageants by a flamboyant attorney... Sounds incredible.
But as the series progress I realized that the writers weren't even taking it serious enough and decided to make us look like fools by disrespecting our intelligence.
Don't even get me started on the season finale. This was the worst I've ever seen.
