Poovellam Kettuppar (1999)
Absurd and lacking in common sense
I remember that I missed watching this movie back when I was in 8th grade. But now, I am so glad I skipped it. The director seems to have assumed that the movie goers are fools (very common assumption by such "directors"). The way the protagonist approaches the heroine for the first time, and eventual scenes throughout the movie, was outrageous. The story has a half decent idea in its core (hence the 3 stars), but the way it is written into a 3 hour movie is far less than mediocre at its best. Scenes are such a drag. In the 2nd half there is a 30 minute "situational comedy" where the hero, heroine, their parents, and their side-kicks, the doctor, and pointless cameos (esp. Of Dhamu - wth was that?!), that draw may be a slight giggle from a few people, but that was not worth the time. This director is humorless. Surprised that crazy mohan wrote the dialogues.
The Road to El Dorado (2000)
Just one word - AWESOME!!!
There are many movies that you feel very good watching. This tops that list for me.
The colors and the witty dialogues are a treat right from the opening song. Forget what the critics say about the movie, its the ride that you will cherish. And this movie will put you in the front seat! The movie is filled with songs, which is great for any animated film in my opinion.
With memorable characters, smooth plot, music that makes you wanna sing along, and above all the animation that just hooks you to the screen is worth every minute of it.
Unfortunate that this kind of movies are not coming these days.
Chandramukhi (2005)
Horrible, Sick, Illogical Movie...
I very much wonder why people in tamil industry make all these Matrix stunts for each and every scene possible. And what not... Rajini as usual fights around 10 bad guys, and they fly away(literally), due to the impact of the blows. Both the fights at the beginning and at the end of the movie is totally unwanted... And Rajini's accent in English Sucks big time. The movie is a re-make of Manichitrathaazhu(a malayalam movie) made 10 years ago.
There is absolutely no humour in vadivelu's so called comedy. And the heroine Nayantara is useless in the movie... she is restricted to just songs and a few unwanted scenes. Jyotika OVER-ACTS no-end. Prabhu is present just for the sake of it. There is a big snake mentioned in the movie(not a real one, but a stupid virtual, computer-generated snake) that is of no use.
Just like all the above mentioned, there are innumerable unwanted scenes and stuff included in the movie. But I very well know that this movie will be a block buster(in tamilnadu, at least), thats because of the fans Rajini has...
But at some point of time, I believe that people will stop watching a movie just for the hero present in it, rather than the quality of story the movie has...
Sachein (2005)
A good Movie starring Vijay after a long time
The story unfolds in a flash back. Sachein studies in a college in Ooty and his classmate is Shalini, a hot tempered girl. Sachein meets Shalini on a rainy day and both instantly get attracted towards each other. When the whole college considers her a beauty queen, it is Sachein who pretends to pay no attention to her. She gets annoyed of Sachein's behaviour. They cross each other for something or other. After a few encounters both realize that they are in love. Finally when Sachein speaks out his love for her, she turns it down because her ego does not permit her to accept it. Sachein challenges that he would make her say that she is in love with him before the college closes for vacations. Shalini comes and tells Sachein that she is soon to marry a boy chosen by her parents on the college closing day. Sachein does not believe it till he meets Shalini's parents the same day. They also confirm the proposal. Sachein, now a heartbroken person accepts the defeat. She feels happy that she has defeated Sachein at least once and she decides to disclose her love to him. At this juncture, Sachein's father (Raghuvaran) a business magnate from US turns up in the campus to meet his son. Shalini is in a dilemma now since she feels that if she declares her love at this juncture, Sachein would misunderstand that her change of heart took place after knowing his financial status. A dejected Sachein decides to go back and tries to talk to Shalini at least once before leaving, from the airport, but in vain. When he is about to board the flight, Shalini turns up at the airport, the lovers unite and all ends well. Vijay as Sachein has done a commendable job. Vijay does full justice as Sachein, the cool and composed youth who is at ease in any situation. Genelia of Boys fame bowls you over with her stunning looks and mind blowing performance as the hot tempered girl. She effectively brings out the pains of a girl in love, unable to tell it out due to her ego. Bipasha Basu has been reduced to nothing. Her song was also cut. Vadivelu's comedy is enjoyable. Debutant Joahn Mahendran's narrative is quite unique. Though the film has shades of Vijay's earlier film Khushi, the treatment makes it different and interesting. Devi Sri Prasad's music is good. Jeeva's cinematography makes the film a visual treat. I watched this movie more than 15 times, especially for Genelia, she is really cute.
