The Darkness (2016)
I might as well have just watched Poltergeist
I wish I could get the hour and a half this movie took from my life.
This film had many of the characteristics of a modern day Poltergeist in such a way that there existed a portal throughout most of the movie, and a kid who was drawn and mesmerized by this 'portal', except it wasn't the television in the living room, it was a dark burned out wall in the kids bedroom.
And of course, the old Spanish lady and her daughter, trying to remove the 'spirits' from the home, and failed to. But let's have dear old Dad save the day!
Don't watch it. It's not even scary. Even for those who can't bear the thought of watching a scary movie.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
JJ Abrams RUINED it.
Picture this: You wait an entire year for an Episode of Star Wars you thought would NEVER come. All of a sudden, the hype builds to epic proportions, the cash grab begins before the movie ever comes out on screen.
Then, you finally get the chance to watch a sold out show, only to find that the character development was very weak, (who the heck is Lor San Tekka? And why wasn't there further development on him? I had to READ about him!), and there was no REAL 'connection' between Ep 6 carried into TFA, and I felt as if the original characters were just "there". No real story with them. They were just 'there' to say their few lines, and that was it. Han got killed off way to easily by Kylo Ren (who takes off his mask OH SO WILLINGLY, yet we all had to wait for 3 Episodes to fly by until Darth took off his? Where's the climax here?) not to mention that Kylo Ren was a pansy....
And come on...ANOTHER Death Star? And then ANOTHER bigger one? Why not create something different? Why not something more difficult to destroy?
I thought the film lacked any real feel of the Star Wars story. No nostalgia whatsoever which would have been hugely important to the long time Star Wars fans. This was a film that was solely created for newcomers, and kids. The Force Awakens served no justice to the previous episodes before it. It was as if they completely severed the original Star Wars and created a completely new story with no substance.
No holograms (i.e think back to "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi"),which would have helped fill in some of the gaps. No flashbacks. No Jedi voices like Yoda or Obi-Wan. That would have been great to see them being incorporated into the film to bring back the nostalgic feel and further emphasize the power of the Jedi and the power of The Force.
Too many gaps in the story, and it's not like they can explain these gaps in the upcoming episodes. They should have done that from the get go. (as in, how did Kylo Ren become established as Han and Leia's son, and HOW did he become evil? and how can we explain Rey's "jedi mind trick" with the Storm Trooper without knowing how she got it ?" its not like they can do a 4,5,6 and then a 1,2,3 to explain these things. It's just gonna keep continuing.
Not to mention, they'll have a different director for the next Episode? How stupid is that?
Huge disappointment.
Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
The steamy scenes got old after awhile
I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to be getting myself into when I watched the movie. Admittedly, I loved the first and second books, but skipped the third because, in all honesty, I hated the writing, but the steamy scenes were great. In the book, that is.
The movie was horrible. Uncomfortable at best. There came a point where, if I saw her bite her lip one more time, I was going to cringe.
Just like the book, every other 5 minutes, was a sex scene. OK, I get it. That's what the movie is all about, including BDSM. But after a while, it got old.
The whole point of the books anyway, were the sex and BDSM scenes. Other than that, the acting was horrible, as well as the storyline, or should I say lack thereof. It just didn't keep me interested.
I guess my 50 Shades nostalgia has worn off, and the movie solidified that for me.
The Possession of Michael King (2014)
I started to become spooked, but...
I initially thought during the beginning of the movie that it was going to be stupid, but something kept me watching. I've been on a "found footage" kind of kick lately, so I thought I would give this movie a chance, so I kept watching.
It only got really good during the middle of the movie. Then, all of a sudden - it flopped. Then I found myself laughing at some scenes because it was just so cheesy at some points. The ending was OK, but it stopped scaring me after a certain point. There was no exorcism, I kinda figured it might have been too cliché to add one in there after all, but come to think of it, what kind of demon possession movie *doesn't* have an exorcism built into the plot? This one didn't.
The ending was abrupt, and left me with the words "That's it?"
I've seen better "found footage" films. This wasn't one of them. It wasn't the kind of movie that made me scared to go to bed after watching it.
Hold Fast (2013)
This film will make your heart soar
The film starts in the out ports of Newfoundland. Around the bay. This is a story about two young boys who set out into the wilderness by traveling across Newfoundland to find themselves. Knocked down by the pressures of trying to fit in living in the city with their aunt, due to one of the boy's parents both being deceased, they look to the wilderness of Newfoundland to discover things about themselves that ultimately bring them closer together. They set out on a mission to find a magical coastal place that was once a promise by his father. A heartwarming story, of heartbreak, culture, fearlessness, friendship, determination, and most of all, adventure.
Never before have I witnessed in a film, the splendor and beauty of such a beautiful province. Places I would love to see for my own eyes, but yet they seem so far out of reach.
You will truly love this film, and the adventure of it.
