Shortbus (2006)

What an outstanding movie. Yes, there is explicit full on sex, both straight, gay, bisexual, S&M, a little bit of every kind. And most of the actors are pretty hot. BUT that's not what makes the movie great. It is a deep commentary on life, love, isolation, depression, relationship, sex, the big city....I kept going back to how someone can feel so alone, so isolated, in a city like New York. And how people connect to one another. It touched me. When the last song was being sung in Shortbus, I actually teared up. Not because I was sad or happy, but just because I was that touched by the whole experience.

No the movie is not for everyone, most definitely not. But if you're open-minded enough to get around the sex, or rather not get bogged down by it, the characters and the growth and changes they go through, the discoveries they make, well, I can't say enough good things about it.

Okay, just like most of the other reviewers, I can find very little positive to say. Joe was too old to be a "frat boy". Christian was so obviously flaming gay I'm surprised he didn't spontaneous combust on screen. the set was obviously an empty house rented for the feature because no frat house is gonna have all those empty walls, and empty bookshelves. Some of the scenes, everyone was crowded very tightly. there was no chemistry between ANY of the players. the music and lyrics was laughable. The Pi Pi Rho house was just a wall with people standing in front of it. The Sig fraternity president was go gay there's no way anyone could NOT know that he was. the "hazing" incident, while kinda hot in a gay porn kind of way, was entirely unbelievable. The pace was plodding and slow and then suddenly rushed. The movie ending left the whole thing feeling incomplete. I read on here they ran out of money, that probably explains that.

I gave it a two just because some of the actors are very easy on the eyes, and there's some nice ass shots, as well as one sorta hot sex scene and few full frontals (or maybe just one, i forget actually).

I would not rent this. I certainly wouldn't buy it under any circumstances. I think whoever made this film had the best of intentions at heart. unfortunately, best intentions do NOT a good movie make.

Eating Out (I) (2004)
7/10
a piece of fluff, but not that bad
13 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
**this may contain spoilers** I wonder if i saw the same movie some of the other reviews did. Granted, this is no Oscar caliber motion picture, it will win no awards. And when you think about it, every major character is dishonest and in some way lying to someone else. But really, taken for what it is: a piece of fluff, its enjoyable. I myself found the phone sex scene well done, and the full frontals were surprising. And the confusion of sexual orientations reminded me somewhat of some English farces I've seen on the stage.

The actors are all cute, some more built and defined, some twinks. The acting, well it is lacking sometimes. And there are plot holes large enough to drive a Mack Truck through.

But seriously, despite all this, I'll recommend the movie, just as a bit of fun. Not every movie has to be an in-depth character study. I saw this with another gay man and a straight woman, all of us with divergent tastes in movies, and we did all enjoy it. The worst movie ever made...nah, not even close.

So if you go see it, don't expect a cerebral thought provoking movie. Just go for the fun, the silliness and the cute guys, and you'll probably enjoy it as well.
