Thin Skinned (2023)
Phenomenal!
I got to see this film screened at the 2023 New York Horror Film Festival, and it brought the house down!
"Thin Skinned" is a riot of a horror comedy with a brilliant performance by Richard Kind, cleverly cast against type.
Social Media horror has become a crowded and hit-and-miss genre, but "Thin Skinned" hits. Hopefully it will be expanded into a feature.
From the writer/director:
"We used much of the same crew and equipment used while filming Impractical Jokers - including the same hidden cameras. Although things have never quite gone to this extreme on our show, you never know when you'll mess with the wrong person..."
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
One of the Greatest Horror Comedies Ever Made
This movie is horror comedy gold. It's been criminally underrated and misunderstood. It was intentionally designed to be the tonal and stylistic opposite of the first 'Texas Chainsaw' film. Accepted on its own terms, this movie is near-perfect.
-The sets are massively inventive.
-The performances - particularly Moseley in his career making performance as Choptop - are unforgettable.
-Savini's gore effects are some of his best.
-There are several laugh-out-loud moments, as well as at least one of the best jump scares in horror.
Tobe Hoper set out to make a comedy, and nailed it. Ignore the doubters and enjoy!
Haunt (2019)
"Let's see what's under the mask..."
Highly recommended! After very low expectations going in, this movie has become an annual Halloween favorite of ours. I've seen many horror movies about real killer(s) in a Halloween attraction ("Funhouse Massacre", "Hellfest", "Blood Fest", etc.) But this fast and fun, bloody thrill ride towers above them. The tension and dread builds all the way through, great performances, creative visuals, and the script is clearly from high quality writers - Beck & Bryan also wrote "A Quiet Place". If you're a horror fan, give it a try.
Superhost (2021)
A killer performance can't save a predictable script
Gracie Gillam is wonderful as the unhinged title character, nailing the comedy, pathos, and menace. But you can't ignore the unlikable leads, illogical plot and predictable script. It's instantly made obvious that the host is a wacko and the vloggers are doomed, yet there's never an attempt to shake up this dynamic or surprise us. They take the most obvious, predictable path possible, from beginning to end.
(There is one surprising moment in the second half involving Vera, a previous host of vloggers - but it's only surprising because it's so absurdly unbelievable.)
The Jinkx and DeLa Holiday Special (2020)
A Christmas Dragsterpiece!
Dela and Jinkx have really done it! Jinkx's vocals are better than ever, Dela's direction and delivery are top notch, the original songs are all extremely clever well crated (check out the album as well!), and the whole event is by turns touching and hilarious. It's a real success story of independent artists. Watch now!
