Divergent (2014)
only three complaints
The movie is a great action movie. It stays fairly true to the book and the characters were almost exactly how i imagined them when i read the book.
My first complaint is that Edward isn't mentioned in the movie, but he is the reason we know that Peter will do whatever it takes to be first. In the book, when the stage one rankings are final, Edward is first and Peter is second, which prompts Peter to stab Edward in the eye with a butter knife and essentially make Edward factionless. That scene in the book is what tells us the most about Peter's character. I didn't quite understand Peter in the movie other than that he is arrogant and strong. There isn't anything that suggests his evil side.
My second complaint is that the movie did a poor job of showing Tris and Al's relationship. The movie just shows Al helping try to kill Tris and then killing himself when she wouldn't forgive him, but they never hint at why. It isn't a big deal, but i just thought it was important enough to mention.
My third complaint is the reason that Al tried to kill Tris. Peter briefly mentions Tris's rise in the ranks, but the rankings board being shown would have made that scene easier to understand.
Other than those three things(that are more of me being picky than any real flaw), i would recommend Divergent to anyone.
Passed the Door of Darkness (2008)
Definitely worth a watch
I honestly thought this was made in the mid 1990's based on what i assumed the budget was. But I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
The movie starts out as you would expect, with a murder scene and a young detective. The beginning is pretty slow and I really had to force myself to pay attention, but I'm glad I stuck with it. Much of the movie is about the relationship between the veteran detective and his daughter, but if you listen and pay attention, this is a major part of the plot.
If you pay attention to the veteran detective's odd sayings, the movie becomes very enjoyable. There are no mention of doors being passed until the closing monologue, which, in my opinion, just adds to the movie.
