Perry Mason: The Case of the Velvet Claws (1963)

One of the Worst
4 July 2022
I'm over half way through watching the Perry Mason episodes in order. Some are great, some are good, some are fair, and some are tortuous. This is one of the painful ones to watch. The main guest star is a lying bimbo. It's very difficult to care what happens to her on anyone else in this episode.

Great Parody: Airplane Before Airplane
6 June 2022
The episode aired 10 days before Halloween and was certainly meant to be tongue in cheek and not dumb and cheap as some 21st Century viewers seem to think without knowing the holiday context.

Think of a mixture of Perry Mason, The Edge of Night, One Step Beyond, and Melodrama. This episode is hilarious and delightful.

Perry Mason: The Case of the Fancy Figures (1958)
Season 2, Episode 10

A Very Depressing Ending
10 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Almost all of the original Perry Mason episodes are pretty good, hence the 8/10 rating. However, this episode has one of the most depressing endings of the whole series.

Yes, the accused is exonerated of two crimes, but in the course of that exoneration he has spent 18 months in prison, lost his job, learns that he wasn't really married to the woman he thought was his faithful wife, and discovers that his once-believed faithful wife wasn't really faithful at all but was instead having an affair with the man who framed him for the first crime.

No wonder the accused doesn't have any lines once the co-conspirator, his former unfaithful unwife, is cross-examined by Mr. Mason.

A Very Enjoyable Series
31 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Things I liked: 1. Cinematography - just outstanding and beautiful 2. The boyhood story - seeing how the friendship developed brought tears to my eyes as I think about the devotion that these two boys had for one another 3. Strong characters - I really wanted to know what would happen next to each of these characters.

Things I didn't liked: 1. The lack of redeeming values. For example, I wanted Sastre to get his bar but not through extortion. I hate cheering for bad guys doing bad things. 2. The lack of a solid explanation telling how Sastre survived the police shoot out. 3. All of the police officers except Prada failed to think logically.

A shallow survey of history, but that's to be expected
13 July 2015
The series uses less than 13 hours to discuss over 600 years of history, of course none of it is going to be in depth. Still, I enjoyed parts that dealt with figures usually glossed over, Stilicho for example. I also enjoyed the talking heads and the insights that they provide. I found myself researching certain topics so I could get a little more information about the era.

My biggest complaint is that much of the series seemed redundant and boring. As another reviewer has mentioned, the series focuses too much on the military history (and really the battles seemed to be the same ones played over and over) and less on the economic and social history.

The series is decent but not great.
