Early Grave (2013)
Excellent no-budget thriller
EARLY GRAVE is an excellent no budget horror/ suspense thriller. It shows what a small group of determined filmmakers can accomplish in a short amount of time when they have drive, talent, and few resources other than a killer screenplay.
The story reminded me of Agatha Christie's .. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. It centers around a small group of people who committed a terrible crime in their youth, and the guilt and shame that has burdened their lives and many cases, destroyed their dreams. Dealing with the long term effects of a brutal, violent act, the movie carries an underlying message about NOT committing such acts, even under the guise of a "prank" or a "practical joke".
The acting on the whole is excellent. It should be noted that some of the actors in this film have already gone on to earn their SAG-AFTRA cards from work on bigger films, Lifetime MOW's, and TV shows like LAW AND ORDER: SVU.
All in all, this movie is a definite "must see".
Delirium (2007)
Ultra-low budget slasher flick
This is a "small" movie, a completely independent production, essentially a one-location shoot in the desert. It was shot in 9 days. The story is something we've all seen before, a bunch of college kids on their way to party and their car breaks down.
Then, when no one comes to help and the sun goes down, they start getting killed off.
While the basic premise isn't very original, and has been used hundreds of times in the past 50 years, the gore associated with the killings was actually not bad for such an ultra-low budget movie. And each death is more brutal, more violent, and bloodier than the one that preceded it.
Also, the killer actually has a reason for doing what he's doing. Of course he's completely insane, that's obvious. The twist in the plot is what made him the way he was.
A lot of people have bashed it because it doesn't stand up to other movies like THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 which came out about the same time. But that is faulty logic - you can't compare apples and oranges. The THHE2 had a budget of $20 million, and this movie was done for less than $10K. They're not even in the same league, so you have to judge the film based on its own merits and limitations, not what the Hollywood studios can do.
Give the film a chance.
Grave Matters (2004)
interesting character study
This movie had a lot of things going against it, and the filmmakers turned their weaknesses into assets. The dark, grainy look of the cheap film used actually punctuates the stark, bleak story being told. it is a one-location shoot, almost entirely taking place inside a broken down mobile home property.
But the real hidden gem in this movie is Kate Vernon, the female lead, who gives us a disturbing, unflinching look into an unhappy, unstable, and abused woman's final descent into madness. What can be worse than to slowly coming to realization you are becoming unhinged?
Many people will be turned off because of a lack of slick, expensive production values. But look deeper at the STORY BEING TOLD, and you'll realize this is a good movie made by people with talent and potential.
