Dollar Night (2014)
Outstanding short film
This movie unexpectedly touched my heart and overwhelmed my feelings to the point that I could not discuss it. It made me cry. It is a beautiful story and one that all lovers of independent film can relate to. I felt connected from the first scene as the movie operator dusted off a formal suit and tie as worn in the old days of film. The lead actor drew me in to his story and the film. It reminded me in so many ways of Cinema Paradso and the love of film. Everything in the movie tied so well together with story line, acting, original props and location. I thought the music was particularly brilliant as it enhanced every scene and made the conclusion very emotional. This is probably the best short story/film that I have seen in twenty years of constant participating in film festivals and independent theater. I highly recommend it to aficionados of historic film and independent film.
Survivorman: Mountain (2005)
Survival is no picnic.
Les really shows you how it is to be stranded. He filmed this in the Canadian Rockies which is a harsh environment. I truly admire this man. He shows you some good ideas for shelter and possible food sources. Makes me truly aware of the dangers and need to prepare for them. Now my car carries the minimum of gear to sustain me and substantial water. Since I live in the desert, any off road trips require shelter from the sum, more water and a decent amount of food such as nutrition bars. I have maps and a compass and always communication devices. Fire is less of an issue in the desert but I have preparation for that as it is great for morale and for warmth during the cold nights. I tell people where I am going with a map and when I am expected back. If not back in time, I ask them to call the phone numbers of people that can locate us and rescue us from our problem such as a car breakdown.
