I'm new to the series and binge watched the series on Netflix. My overall reaction to this episode was the ending's suspense - the potential human devastation of the city and will there be enough hunters to minimize that devastation? The prospect of more humans getting turned gives me the shivers.... The series has got me invested enough to care about this consequence on the human population and the subtext theme from last season - that Jack can bring about a new world of no monsters so that the 3 amigos can finally have their dream beach vacation. Jack's trial without his powers to me means he can learn to empathize with humanity's value (something only Gabriel the archangel got a glimpse and appreciated which none of his brothers was/is able to understand to this day) and to me this is a very crucial subplot in order to bring about this dream vacation (but how long will this vacation last before another attack?). I like the exploration of Dean becoming this all-powerful warrior villain character. Because this is what this plot represents to me - exploring how scary this Dean character would be as a nemesis and the inevitable conclusion that thank goodness - he's the good guy! Because Michael doesn't understand the strengths built into humanity, he doesn't understand the power of Dean's will which is undergirded in family love and the true cosmic power contained within the concept of brotherly love that has been tested, tried and remained true as the brothers have been through. (I appreciate this overall theme of the series and kudos to those brothers and sisters who have gone through the ups and downs of being siblings and have stayed true by keeping their connection through it all.) I really enjoy that Sam is developing and designing the US network of the Men of Letters in his image of listening first, showing compassion and thus able to give 2nd chances, so unlike the cold British network of careful study in order to lead to complete and utter annihilation. I am looking forward to when Sam starts to use more advanced technology weapons to defeat the monsters and Dean's reactions to them! For me this is what this episode laid out and what to watch for in the 2nd half of the season.
