Terrible Beginning
26 June 2022
We just couldn't get past the thriller-style, too loud, dramatic music, that left us turning the sound up to hear what was being said, then turning the sound down every time the music started. Made it completely unwatchable. We'd gone into it assuming it was a crime drama, and came out of it scarred, without even being able to complete the opening episode.

A nice little modern history drama
19 December 2020
I was born in '81, so hadn't even heard about Aden and what had happened there. Makes this series perfect for me, as I had no idea that what I was watching was full of historical inaccuracies and, TBH, being ignorant of the period, it doesn't bother me either way.

So, what I saw was a nice little modern history drama about a tide period I had no prior knowledge of, well acted, great drama, great action scenes, and a suspenseful ending.

I suppose, if enough complained about the historical inaccuracies, then no wonder it wasn't renewed for a second series (as we Brits say, rather than the American "season"). Yet it would have been nice to see the following year, with the retreat from Aden, and a complete resolution to the whole saga.

Yet, as a mini series, it still ends up strangely well rounded, finishing on a nice high.

Great idea, shame about the execution...
19 December 2020
For anyone that knows anything about computers, parts of this can be excruciating! However, it redeems itself with some good drama scenes, a good cast of actors, and some great personal interactions.

It has all the usual CSI stuff, with explanations of terms, etc., for the uninitiated. TBH, the only reason I actually know the existence of the "dark web" is due to crime shows like these! It does it slightly differently, by giving a caption at the beginning of each episode, with some of the mini explanations as it goes along, just like the usual CSI.

Season two definitely turned out better than season one, and didn't wrap it up too bad. Once we'd gotten into it, my partner and I were disappointed to see it end, but I don't believe that it ever really properly got itself off of the ground.

I think that the only reason that the CSI series work is because of the personal interactions. In a way, it's easy to get more involved in the personal background of the characters than it is to see how they solve each episode's crime. Sometimes, especially in the first season, the resolution was a bit lacklustre. Yet we still got involved, kept watching and, I suppose, in the end it was partially worthwhile. Yet, unlike other series, seeing it once is enough and just isn't worth a rewatch. A complete shame, really, as the characters themselves were interesting enough, it was often the plot that let them down.

A frightening true story
13 July 2019
I'm glad that this documentary is here to remind us of the devastation caused by the greed that turned cattle into cannibals. What the hell did they think would happen by forcing them to eat so unnaturally? They just didn't think!

I was born in '81 and have been a vegetarian since '93, yet I could be still carrying the disease without even knowing. No one knows how many could be infected. It'll probably take someone famous showing symptoms before they even truly put the money in to try and find a cure.

I now live abroad and am unable to donate blood because of this disease. The world remembers, even when the politicians try to forget.

A nice, fun fantasy
10 June 2017
Having never personally read the book, and even being unaware that there is a book series until checking out the film, I am only able to rate the film as it stands. I can understand why people would be upset that the film doesn't live up to the books; I have had that several times with book series that I love. Yet it is surprising to see that others would down rate the film on a standalone basis.

Granted, even to my Southern English ears I can hear that Jeremy Irons has a terrible Southern US accent. Yet despite that he is still a versatile actor. The film itself is done in a comedic way, even though this is supposed to be a fantasy suspense romance. Even with the moments that made me jump, I ended up laughing at a few of them. And the storyline had me completely enraptured throughout.

The ending was heart breaking, yet with funny and positive moments to break you away from the sadness. The ending scene shows that they could easily make a sequel, if they wanted to, but it's just rounded up enough to make it a standalone. And, from what I've now read up about the books, perhaps it's best that way.

All in all, a film I'd happily revisit sometime. And it has tempted me enough to check out the books that it's based on!
