The Happening (2008)

What's "happening" to M. Night Shyamalan ?
17 June 2008
Okay, let me start by saying that I'm a HUGE M. Night Shyamalan fan: I loved his early movies and especially "Unbreakable" which is (by far) one of my favorite movies.

BUT... even if all his movies have flaws and I can understand people not liking them, I just don't understand what's happening to him...

He still managed to make me want to SEE this movie because I thought the story would be gripping and fascinating but as with "Lady in the water", it seems M. Night Shyamalan has lost his magic touch.

The beginning is good, very good... I liked the fact that nobody knows what's happening, I liked all the mysteries, I liked the graphic deaths (there's much more blood than in his previous films)... I liked everything about it... I was so happy to finally get the feeling I had when I watched "the 6th sense"... THEN everything went wrong... from the dialogs (which are by far some of the stupidest dialogs I have ever heard... everybody was just laughing in the theater) to the story itself which can not have been written by an adult...I like when a movie appeals to our inner child but here... come on, the end is PATHETIC!

Nowadays a lot of movies only rely on CGI and stunt scenes, so they hide their lacks of stories behind huge effects... here there's no CGI, almost no stunt scenes so since there's no story, the movie is just empty... it's like passing a beautiful gate to take a road which leads nowhere.

The revelation of the mystery is made half way through by one of the supporting roles (so what's the point of watching the rest?), there are COUNTLESS sub-stories that are really boring (what's the point with the lady in the house?, what happens to the people in the other house? What about the little girl) and it ends just like that, leaving a feeling of huge disappointment.

As for the actors...what can I say.... it just seemed to me that they were not concerned and bored throughout the movie... they must say those lines and you never believe one word of what they say...there's absolutely no chemistry between them and you can not believe those two are married. I love both of the leading roles but I have to say they have never been that bad in a movie.

So this movie has a good beginning but that's about it... oh yes, there's another good point in the movie... it is short...

Please M. Night Shyamalan, go back to what you were doing, I'm missing you so much and even though I still trust your ability to make good movies, I still hope you'll react in a good way and make movies you used to.

So for me it's probably M. Night Shyamalan's worst film to date...and it hurts me to say that !

I loved it...

Okay here's the deal....

I can already hear all those so-called fans telling us how much this movie betrays the spirit of Indiana Jones...how much it should have been this or that...

Well, let me tell you that I enjoyed the movie... This movie is exactly what Indiana Jones is about: humor and adventure.

From the very beginning, the Indiana Jones series has been a huge popcorn movie : fun, fun and fun... its ambition has always been to be 2 hours of pure fun, a two hour ride on a roller coaster...

AND that's exactly what it is ... fun and ride, adventure and love and of course it's not believable, of course it's not an essay on the subcultural phenomenon of the great Aztecs... but who cares ?

if you want to spend a good time and if you're ready to leave all your expectations at the entrance of the theater and really give it a try you'll enjoy it as much as I did...

Good Job !

Great movie
26 April 2008
Once again, Stephen Chow delivers a movie which is both funny and clever.

From the acting which is amazing (the young actor is incredible) to the special effects which are by far some of the best I've seen recently.

The movie's funny when it comes to the situations which are sometimes just unbelievable but it is also very kind and tender when it shows the relationships between father and son.

This movie can be seen by children or parents and you will all fall in love with CJ7.

It is well worth a trip to the theater (if it's released where you are) or to a shop near you . I'll buy it right away when it gets released on DVD.

Good job, Mr Chow !

Not worth spending an hour and a half
25 April 2008
I've never seen anything so boring...

From the story (which is basically a mix between War of the World and Independence Day) to the acting (I was wondering if one can still call that acting since the trees in the forest have more attitude than the actual actors)....

Not mentioning the special effects (a little "ziiiiip" and a ray to make people disappear).

This movie had no budget and wanted to look like a million-dollar movie but frankly it was just painful to watch...

Now directing... well what can I say? ... we all know C. Thomas Howell as an actor ... so let me know that he is twice as bad as a director... there's basically no direction at all...

It's always sad to see someone like a former A-list actor becoming something like this but take my advice... do not buy or rent this movie.. keep your money for something worth it !

Wow... painful to watch...
14 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
OK... I love horror movies and I'm not that picky about what I watch but hey... This movie is just more than I can bear... I've almost never stopped watching a movie but this Redsin Tower is one of the few movies I cannot stand...

Let's start with the story... boring, conventional and seen three million times... come on, I don't see what's new here: a boyfriend wants to get revenge on his former girlfriend? a tower full of mysteries and bad things??? it's just the basic story of 99% of the bad horror movies out there.

but worse is the film.... the image is so dirty that it looks just like a cheap holiday movie... I enjoyed the Blair Witch Project movie but at least the image was something interesting... here it is just bad and blurry... nothing worth spending money to see...

Finally the acting is just awful... at times it just seems the actors are almost looking at the camera when delivering their lines ... I know why the actresses were chosen... mainly because they spend most of the movie talking about sex and walking around naked... frankly here too it's not worth losing your time watching...

As for the good critics .... I can only think about one explanation... they were left by the producer, director and lead actor of the movie... else... we didn't see the same horrendous film...

Bionic Woman (2007)

Not worth spending an hour
23 September 2007
I saw the pilot of Bionic Woman (at the Comicon in San Diego in July 2007)

I first didn't want to but since I wanted to go to the Heroes' panel which was just after I had to sit through the presentation of the show and we (me and 6000 other people) watched the pilot.

Let me tell you ... there wasn't much applause after it ended since it's really common.

The FX were really bad (they told us they'd work on them), the story is SO uninteresting : she has an accident, she gets new body parts and she can jump from one building until the other...

no surprises, the characters are not really moving... everything is just plain boring..

I'm quite sure this show will get canceled after a couple of episodes since there are far better series around.

More, at the end of the episode in San Diego, we were introduced to the actress (who seems to be nice), the producer and the director and... get what... they noticed people in the room didn't like it... more they tried to justify their choices and that the show was going to be much better...

well, I've seen enough... and frankly I won't tune in to see the rest.

Woaw.... probably the best movie.... ever
24 October 2005
No come on, this is a joke ... of course !

I've loved that movie not only because it's awful but because even the actors are wondering why they are there...

An example ? A flying ant which kidnaps Carmen Electra to entertain the slaves... and do you know how she does that... she sings... come on this is just great... Would you kidnap her just to make sure she'll sing to entertain you... yes I'm no specialist in Carmen Electra but I doubt her talents (both of them) include singing.

You want to enjoy this movie? A pack of beers, a couple of good friends... you'll love it !
