The Fearway (2023)
Premise good, execution poor
Where do I start? The plot could actually have been pretty good. I like the idea of being chased by some kind of entity and going round in circles, unable to work out where you are or how to escape. The movies ending is also twisty and could have been good. However, the acting is terrible and the casting poor. The 2 main characters are supposed to have been high school sweethearts, however she looks early 20's and he looks to be mid forties. There is zero chemistry between them and it's just completely unbelievable for the audience.
The make up on the Ferryman is terrible. I've seen kids with better Halloween makeup. Very cheap.
The script is poorly written as well. It's a shame, as it could have had premise.
Avoid.
Poor Things (2023)
Visually stunning
This movie is strange, weird and fantastical. I loved it!
Bella Baxter commits suicide and her body is discovered by a mad, genius scientist, who removes her baby from her stomach and implants it's brain into her body. She has no recollection of anything and has to learn life from scratch.
She is rude, crass and has no filter. She becomes engaged to a kind, patient doctor and then runs off with a crooked lawyer, who falls in love with her and becomes obsessed. They run off to Lisbon, where Bella becomes tired of his ways and joins a prostitute hotel.
This movie is deliciously funny, original and eccentric. The theme and backgrounds are visually stunning and almost dream like.
Some people will hate this movie, but don't let that put you off. It's really rather brilliant.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
Not as bad as the reviews make out
First of all, it's definitely not the best horror film I've ever seen. It's not going to win any Oscar's or leave you gasping in awe. However, it's certainly not a terrible as some of the reviews suggest.
It holds your attention and has some great jump scares.
On the negative side, I'm a huge fan of the insidious movies, but this just doesn't feel like it belongs with the others.
The plot isn't terrible, but the college scenes are a bit cheesy, overacted and stereotypical. The whole sorority thing has been overdone.
In short, as a stand-alone movie this is fine. A solid 6/6.5. It just doesn't have the insidious feel for me.
Soft & Quiet (2022)
Don't bother.
I really struggled to finish this film.
Not due to the violent content, but due to sheer boredom! It's very monotone, lots of talking and little action.
I don't get the hype, it just doesn't go anywhere.
I don't develop any feelings towards any of the characters (even the victims).
It's certainly not horror or even thriller. I would struggle to put this into any genre to be honest.
Emily is a school teacher, who we find out has a hidden agenda. It escalates from there, with her dragging other women into her mindset of hatred towards anyone who isn't white American.
It all comes to a head when they break into the house of some Asian sisters and terrorize them, leading to tragedy.
I would save yourself as hour and a half of mind numbing boredom and skip this one.
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Worse than just bad
I was so looking forward to this, but what a disappointment. Terrible acting from most of the cast, slow, boring and predictable. I guessed most of the plot in the first 30 minutes.
Not even the mighty Samuel L Jackson can save this one. Don't bother!
The Happening (2008)
Extraordinarily bad
Where do I start? Terrible acting from all of the cast, script is badly written and weird, the ending has no relevance and doesn't explain anything. I hated it.
Army of the Dead (2021)
Great fun
I don't get all the negative reviews, I thought it was great fun. Darkly comedic, some beautifully shot camera shots And a great soundtrack.
People are taking it too seriously. I really enjoyed it.
Haunted (2018)
Not as bad as the reviews here
Am I the only one who thinks this is quite entertaining? Ok, it's Far fetched, theatrical and probably not true stories, but I think some of them are genuinely scary. The story about the woman in white, actually had me closing my bedroom door at night. One for the horror fans, but not the non believers.
