Joe Cocker: Mad Dog with Soul (2017)
Phenomenal!
I always thought Joe had "that" thing... that voice, that presence, whatever you want to call it. So very few singers these days could even stand in his shadow.
I'm just a fan... not a critic, but I know I will watch this documentary over and over just to remind myself that at one time, Joe Cocker lived among us.
What a blessing.
A Walk in the Woods (2015)
Not bad. Not great.
I like Bill Bryson. I haven't read this particular book, but he's an awesome author. My folks were raised near the Appalachian trail, and it's been a goal of mine to hike it (at least for a bit). So, this movie should've been a slam dunk for me.
Thing is, there didn't seem to be a real point to the movie. Old guys wanting one last hurrah? A couple of difficult situations from which they recover? Realizing (like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz) that happiness really is in your own backyard? I wish they'd have just shown video of the trail...it would have been much more dramatic.
I'm not taking away from Nick Nolte or Robert Redford (except for the fact that my teen heartthrobs seem to have aged badly), but I left the theatre wanting more!
I saw Bill Bryson "in concert" this year. I wondered how a book author would entertain an entire auditorium for any length of time. Everyone was laughing and enjoyed the evening immensely! Mr. Bryson is intelligent, funny, and possesses a dry wit that just didn't come through a lot in the film. There WERE bits at which I laughed out loud, but those three or four scenes were the highlights of the movie. They should have been leading up to a climax, but instead, led to the two guys giving up and going home.
The movie just felt like I was riding in a Cadillac that was missing a tire.
