excellent comedy
14 October 2006
Tangbohu was a very famous artist in ming Dynasty of China, but in Chow's film, (I said Chow's, not only for his acting as the hero but also for his affection in the film, because he usually took the role of director as his) his image was greatly changed. but the changes were not done random. Chow cast his feeling of his early life in it. Chow is a clever actor, but when he was young, everybody, especially his boss thought he was just anybody else. he felt disappointed and lonely, because no one amid his talent. so in the film this feeling was expressed through the role. though it is a very good comedy which makes you laugh through out the film, you can still get some complex feeling of life. Chow showed his excellent acting talent in the film, and the other supporting roles were also very good, such as Peipei Cheng, James Wong etc. if you can speak Cantonese, you can get more interest from it, because it contained a lot of vivid and interesting oral language in Cantonese.

Night Sun (1990)
a lyric film
16 June 2005
great film. it is based on Tolstoy's novel, but when I first saw it I did not know that. I just felt there was something from Russia, maybe the enthusiasm under silence. Sergio, a nobleman with strong self-respect and vanity, found his fiancée used to be a mistress of his duke, he felt deeply hurt and betrayed, and he became a friar. after many years, he was known as a sage, but all faded out when a innocent girl was taken to him. though a Italian film, but the directors express in the most appropriate way the thought of religion and life. They added details like the pear tree at the intersection, applied to the hero's feeling and very lyric. I also very appreciate the scene when Sergio knew the truth of his fiancée, nothing was told, the hero just saw her stood in dark. nothing need to be told.

why it is a comedy
2 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I like the film, not because it is on love or it is funny, but because it tell a story of mutual dependence of the characters. Alice love all others in her family, though the feeling to everyone is different, but they are all deep and long lasting. the feelings are not thunder like, but like a spring rain. they just need each other, so Wilbur stop trying to kill himself and learn to take care of Alice and her daughter. but I don't know why it is described as a comedy, for it contains very few funny scenes, to some one, it is moving. so if it takes another genre, it would have different audience and they will have quite different opinion to the film.
