Good (2008)
10/10
One of the finest dramas of the past 50 years
28 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is a simply outstanding film. I saw it when it first came out on the cinema and had to make a huge effort to do so, seeing as it had such limited cinema release but it was well worth the effort. It is a carefully and skillfully made film that manages to evoke some of the feeling that was prevalent in 1930s Germany and that made the rise of National Socialism possible. It was refreshing in that all the characters were much more fully rounded than you normally see in dramas dealing with the same period and thereby make the drama all the more worthy. There are key moments in Good that are almost akin to poetry on film. It will be difficult to forget such scenes as the one where John discusses with Maurice the direction their country is heading and the resultant moral struggle John feels within himself. The script in this scene shows a soul fighting with itself. This is superbly contrasted with the location the conversation is taking place in - a beautiful summer's day in a lakeside park. Such attention to detail as swastika banners fluttering in the wind over the parks' kiosks not only add realism but brings home the constant presence of the National Socialist state within the lives of its citizens. The final scene is a chilling statement of what Halder's choices have brought him to. A thoughtful, beautifully rendered film.

Gunmen (1993)

Truly diabolical brainless pile of diarrhoea
16 September 2009
I can't believe some of the glowing reviews here and feel compelled to set the record straight as this web site is generally an excellent guide to movies. I am a big Chris Lambert fan and so tuned in eagerly to this one. What a waste of time. Everything about this movie screams out cheap, cheap, cheap! All I can think is the talented actors must have been desperate for some quick cash to get roped into this one. Its turgid, brainless and moronic. It has no plot, absolutely shameful acting and effects that make The A team look out of this world. Do yourselves a favour and do something more interesting like.... watch a snail make its way over the pavement for an hour and a half.

Dracula (2006 TV Movie)

Fantastic sets and nice atmosphere
12 February 2007
There are many negative reviews here but this had some lovely facets to it. The sets and the locations were absolutely first class as was the camera work. The acting was by no means bad and for once the BBC mercifully spared us from their usual modern cheap trick of getting the male leads to prance round in the nude. This is a different version of the classic tale but quite refreshing for all that. I normally like Marc Warren's acting style but in this case its unfortunately true to say he did not suit the role. Sophie Myles is a fine actress so no complaints there except to say they should have expanded her role. Despite this productions' defects, it does have certain sterling merits and is worth watching out for.

The Dead (1987)
Wonderful period piece!
15 November 2004
This is a wonderful evocation of a previous age. True, it is slow moving but that is definitely part of its charm. Stately and elegant - a fitting tribute to an iconic director! Not many films can boast such a unique form. Top marks to the director for having the bravery to create such a work of art that may have seemed commercially non-viable. I doubt very much a piece like this would be given the green light in today's action-driven, dumbed-down movie environment. Does a good job of adapting the James story and also brings a little something extra to it as well as all truly good art should - it is not enough merely to emulate. Wonderful film and not to be missed!
