Feels Good Man (2020)
A Documentary That Goes Beyond The Meme Into The Culture!
Feels Good Man is not just a Documentary of the Internet character and meme Pepe (the Frog). It's also about Internet culture, expressionism, and the power of symbols. It depicts the attachment people can have to certain images, seeing them as ways of expressing themselves and their feelings. These can be both showcases of good and hope, as well as rage and sadness. This diversity is explained very well in the movie with a mix of real-time and animation, that shows the facades of the character being used for many means.
The documentary also shows the struggle to understand and come to terms with your creation slipping through your fingers into an infinite sea of people. Then diluting so much that you cannot get it back. The popularization of your character but not of your art, the uses and depictions that were never intended, many the Creator doesn't want to be attached to it, and by way of creation, all dragging him into the spotlight.
The cinematography is spot on, with a really good dose of animation, as well as popular images. The arc is well accomplished and there are a good amount of perspectives thrown into the mix. Ultimately, it seems like a fair and knowledgeable depiction of the meme's progress through time and of meme culture in general.
Joker (2019)
An intense buildup of a mentally broken character
An intense buildup of a mentally broken character, slowly mutating, from the environment that surrounds him and from himself, into the world's famous Joker. This movie is not for everyone, its a carefully crafted piece of art both shocking and slow to unveil, which many may not like. However, these two parts really make the movie. The slowness gives you an appreciation for the impeccable and subtle characterization by Joaquin and connects you in a better way to the pain and suffering of Arthur, the character. Its shocking nature allows for a constant back and forth between sympathizing with his struggles and repulsing his actions, while at the same time, understanding the stance he ultimately finds himself in. Everything pieced together with great music, sound, ambient, and acting. Special congratulations to Joaquin Phoenix who steals the show, as it should be. He created a very intriguing character that while connected with the Joker persona, doesn't resemble any of the character's previous interpretations, therefore making this his unique and personal take.
Trolljegeren (2010)
A different take on Monster Movies
I've seen a lot of people recommend this title, and because of that, I've been wanting to see it for a long time. I was not familiar with pretty much any Norwegian folklore about trolls, nor I knew the locations depicted in this film. But that didn't seem to matter. It was fascinating learning about it while the movie rolled.
It starts slow, as it ramps up to the first encounter but from then on it becomes really interesting. The whole style is well made and quite different from anything else. Even tho there are some misses and downtime, it all end ups working together.
It does a great job of creating a documentary feel. It really was like learning about trolls as real beasts. The details about their lives like of any other animal are believable and well spread to give an escalated sense of knowledge as the film develops. Of course, this is folklore and it didn't make sense for them to exist, but in the scope of the movie, they are credible. You should note tho that I enjoy folklore and old tales, so even if I liked when there was talk about the trolls, for others it might be boring.
A few plot points feel a bit skipped but it's all to focus on the trolls as that's really what the film is about. The characters are not really developed for the same reason. Except for the troll hunter where is life and view of his job are better examined, but not much still. All characters are there to unveiling information about the environment and/or the trolls themselves, directly or indirectly, while also giving credibility to the documentary style. Given that, they have their place and the acting is good.
The trolls are well made with their half funky, half scary appearance. They do behave like wild beasts, being portraiture, as far as I know, very well.
It isn't particularly scary, it has its moments. It also has some comedic value in places. Both of this points being mostly driven by the trolls appearances.
In the end, it's a well-made movie, great for those who like monsters and/or old fantasy tales. If you know the folklore it's a must. If not
like me, it doesn't matter as half the fun is in finding those pieces and developing it for yourself. If you don't enjoy non-English movies, even with subtitles, it would have to be a skip as I would recommend watching it with the original audio. For the others if you are looking for something different in this genre, give it a try, you might just fell in love with it.
