The Coming War on China (2016)
The first 30 minutes is devastating
Many reviews state that this documentary is anti US but the first 30 minutes simply documents the atomic bomb tests conducted by America on the Marshall Islands in the Pacific for many decades after WW2and their effects on the people who live there.
And they are horrific.
I had no idea that the US conducted what amounts to genocide on this innocent island nation, purely in the name of weapons research, and that it continues event very recently with missile tests.
I sat open mouthed watching this and I urge you to do the same, the rest of the documentary may be biased but watch that first half hour, verify for yourself, as I did, that the story is true, the tell me you're not disgusted, appalled and outraged.
The Victoria Cross: For Valour (2003)
Gobsmacking
In our modern world the word "hero" is thrown around for a sportsperson who has a few good games.
This documentary on the other hand shows the true definition of heroism, people who risked or gave their lives, agains massive odds, to save their comrades.
I can't begin to explain how impressive the awardees of the VC are and some of the stories here are truly jaw-dropping.
Then there's Clarkson, you may or may not like him from Top Gear but in this he is superb, his knowledge and respect for this subject shines through, he did 2 other fantastic
war story documentaries but I wish he'd done more.
They're a masterclass in storytelling.
And the twist at the end is scarcely believable, but it's true.
I cannot recommend this show highly enough and have rewatched it several times.
For Valour!
Sunderland 'Til I Die (2018)
This Newcastle fan loved it, but not for the reasons I expected to!
As a fan of local rival team Newcastle, who've had more downs than ups lately, I initially watched this with a bit of anticipation of enjoying seeing our rivals suffer.
But, pretty quickly I began to really sympathise with the staff and fans affected by such an awful season. Even though I knew the end result I found myself rooting for them. Some really good people at the club and I didn't enjoy watching them unhappy, and certainly I feel really bad for anyone who lost their job.
This was a great doc and I watched it all over a couple of days. As soon as it finished I came to check how they've done since the end of the program (pretty well at the time of writing).
I hope they get back up and look forward to the derbies again, so long as we win :)
