Happy Endings: Fowl Play/Date (2013)
This episode is an abomination
Being 61 years old, I understand that I am not in the target audience. This is the first episode of "Happy Endings" that I have seen. It will also be my last. I have kept parrots for the last 12 years and am a member of a large local bird club. We are constantly trying to educate people on the commitment and education required to keep a parrot happy and healthy. Unfortunately, the moronic and irresponsible behavior portrayed by the characters in this episode that resulted in the tragic death of a beautiful Green-winged macaw does happen far too many times in real life by stupid and lazy bird owners. It is not funny to see it portrayed on TV. Then compounding it by desecrating the body by tossing out of a window into a dumpster is deplorable. By the way, parrots aren't racist. The language that they repeat is learned from people that they have been around. The writers are just sick people.
The reality is that many common household products can be deadly to a bird. Toxic fumes from glue, paint, new electrical appliances, air fresheners, non-stick cookware, shoe polish, aerosol sprays, burning candles, new flooring and smoke can all cause death to a bird because of the way that their more efficient respiratory systems function. Giving a bird alcohol to drink is something that is cruel and inhumane. A typical Green-winged macaw weighs about 3 pounds, while a typical adult human will weigh 40 to 70 times more. The effect from a sip of alcohol on us would be magnified 40 to 70 times more on that macaw. A caring and informed parrot owner would know all of that and make sure that anyone else living in the household would as well.
Parrots are clever and affectionate companions with a sense of humor and devotion that is very human. They do not deserve to be depicted in this way.
