Household name in the Brazilian cultural scene, Thalma de Freitas is an actress and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter.
De Freitas got her start in the theatre scene in Rio in the early 90s before gaining widespread fame as an actress in Brazilian film and television, being series regular in 14 shows from 1996 to 2012.
Born in 1974, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she grew up in a creative household as the daughter of noted pianist, arranger, composer and conductor Laércio de Freitas, who she credits for developing her musical ear and her deep understanding of the intersections of Jazz and Brazilian culture.
A dynamic singer and composer, she is known for her genre-defying mix of Samba, Jazz, Afro-Brazilian folk and R&B. Her songwriting and vision have led to an array of collaborations with Brazilian and American luminaries alike, including Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Quantic, Madlib and Kamasi Washington.
In 2019, Freitas earned her first Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album for her work on John Finbury's Sorte!
Notable performances include Dj set ay Hollywood Bowl opening for Sergio Mendes ( August 2021 ) Solo concerts at Union Station, Grand Performances, Sunset Concerts at the Skirball Cultural Center, and a spotlight at the Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony in London, 2012.
