Strangely unsatisfying
17 August 2023
In short, this is a movie that doesn't really have any great flaws, but still falls short of expectations. It has a timeless premise, some famous and all very professional actors, nice locations, very efficient sound/music/score; still there is remarkably little substance. It feels like a given exercise in a film studies seminar, and it is flawlessly executed, but I didn't get the feeling, why the movie had to be made, what it's trying to convey, apart from the obvious and always relevant messages. In one word, it is too formal. It is rather long and could have been edited at times, but that's not the problem. What is, is that it"s highly unresolved: each of the three parts has a setup, has pro&antagonists, does with time manage to engage the audience with the characters, but leads nowhere. Yes, the 3rd part has a predictable punchline that *ends* the movie, but.it is somewhat unfair on a meta level that again the burden to keep things in motion falls on the (former) crew (that is, filimwise, in terms of plot, Abigail knows, and a bit too exaggeratedly well, how to deal with the situation). - I get the feeling, the movie tries to be an allegory, a satire and a love story at the same time, w/o in the end fulfilling either of these nor its negation. - This review sounds all negative, which is misleading, the movie is good, well-done and all, but, and that is the most scathing point, it had *potential* to be a *really good* movie.

Should be remixed

Of course it was ahead of its time. Of course it could be realized better nowadays. And I wished there were more of it. It is brilliant.

BUT: my really major gripe is the sound mixing that obscures much of the spoken word, narration and expertise under the wails of the damned - and the DVD I got does not have subtitles either. Fix at least one of those (and finish the damned and blessed thing up unto XXXIII) and it will be Great Art To Last The Ages.
