The Great Buck Howard (2008)
Colin Hanks is flat and uninspired in this otherwise decent film.
I think the film would have been great if they cast someone besides Colin Hanks. He is undeniably mediocre in this role. He performance is flat and drab and when I see him perform I can not help but think how much better the scene would be if someone else starred. I don't have a problem with this kid trying to cut his teeth in acting but do we all have to watch him learn to act on film. Seriously does Colin's dad Tom Hanks have to manufacture films just so his kid can have and acting career. I know Hollywood is nothing more than nepotism as a business but when the actor really doesn't cut it it's all the more insulting to the public and shame on the director for not trying to get more out of him.
The Land of College Prophets (2005)
Cult Indy Film
You will either absolutely hate this movie, or really love it. There is no in between with most Cult movies and this project is no exception. If it clicks with you, it's a genuine treat. If it doesn't then watching 20 minutes of it would be too much. Also, definitely not a girl movie.
I watched it with a group of friends, some of them enjoyed it and seemed to "get it" on whatever level. The others "got it" in a different way and had a ball ripping it apart. Those two guys spent another hour skipping back and re-watching some scenes.
Either way it's worth the 10 bucks.
Sin City (2005)
This film and Land of College Prophets are in the same vein.
Sin city is an amazing tale. It is as valid to me as any Shakespeare play or any critically acclaimed film that I have seen. To me the character Marv stands out as the most amazing performance of he year and if people don't see the high art and amazing leap in film-making in this motion picture then I believe the public to truly be daft. It is simply the best film this year in every way.I saw a sneak peek in NY at this other flick called The Land of College Prophets. The Land of College Prophets is coming out pretty soon through York Entertainment. It has the same comic book vibe. It's fight scenes are just as cool and elaborate but these guys made it for like 1/100th the cost.I used to think Rodriguez was the king of Bang for the buck but he's gonna have to move over cause this film is really amazing in a dark comic book way yet cost less than Rodrigues spent on his catering. Sin City rules though!!
Everything Moves Alone (2001)
Sideways and Garden State get all the respect when this film is just as good!
This film really is like Sideways and the Garden State rolled in one. It has the comic timing and strangeness of Garden State but the sincerity of Sideways. The characters are rich and flawed but you know what stinks the most is that this film was finished before either of those films. I saw this film in New York and was happy to discover it. I come to find out that is still hasn't been put out on DVD. The state of Independent film is very strange. It seems that people are so exhausted by routing through all the crappy independent films that they never discover the good ones. The summary of this film is simple. It's a bunch of weird quirky characters in a small town. It's about there connections to each other (There many connections). It's a layered piece of art that one day people will come to respect when these guys break out. I hope you'll seek it out.
