Junebug (2005)
Fascinating Study in Family Relationships
For me this film contains the intensity of a symphony written for a chamber music ensemble. The rhythm of a a film combines long silences with vast cinematic shots.
Embeth Davidtz projects a cool big-city sophistication paired with the upper-class British accent. Could one be more of an outsider? The artist David Walk( played by Frank Hoyt Taylor)is a superb portrait of a half-insane fruitcake who changes art dealers over a basket of fruit.... Celia Wilson shines as a quiet and intense bitch-of-a-mother-in-law. And of course Amy Adams is radiantly beautiful in her naiveté. Her performance in the hospital scene is breathtaking.
Even though the problems in family relationships is far from being a new subject, Phil Morrison was able to look at it from yet a new angle.
Critical Care (1997)
An amazing bittersweet film that went undetected and unnoticed...........why?
It is hard to say HOW this film escaped my radar..... Just saw it in IFC and was amazed at the breadth of talent on it along with the wonderful ideas.
Would like to see it a couple of more times just to digest it.
Don't own a TV - my girlfriend does; I only watch it when I see her.
Why on earth this movie did not get proper distribution ?
Strongly recommend.
Wallace Shawn's character made me think of All that Jazz - don't ask me why. Maybe due to their life/death discussions.
Ed Hermann was really astonishing as a lawyer.Kira Sedgwick and James Spader were
truly wonderful together.
Hope to hear some feedback.
Ladies in Lavender (2004)
some critics are like eunuchs
I don't remember who said it, but some critics ARE like eunuchs; they know EXACTLY how it has to be done..... I am reacting to a review I've read recently in a major newspaper.
"Ladies in Lavender" is a wonderful film. As a first directorial debut by a mature actor(Charles Dance) it is well acted and beautifully shot. Dame Judy and Dame Maggie are the major stage actresses alive and are at their best here. Daniel Bruhl is an excellent casting choice - he looks like a young Yehudi Menuhin. Yes, it IS a crowd pleaser - so what ? Fassbinder and Bresson is not for everybody; even though one cannot deny their contribution to the world cinema. This film is a wonderful piece of a chocolate cake - so share it with a good friend. Please.
