The Arroyo (2014)
Bigoted Trash
Trash produced by bigots. No redeeming qualities as a movie. Only propaganda by and for stupid people. The entire crew and cast, the writer especially (who is also the director naturally, since no self-respecting director would ever agree to make a movie out of hateful unsympathetic junk writing such as this and not be immune from obvious accusations of complicity that would haunt his career forever), but the actors as well, they must all hate themselves to stoop so low to agree to take part in this crime of cinema. I can understand a valid propaganda film that professes its biased viewpoint upfront, tells you like it is, no pulled punches, but this movie masquerades as a serious drama, as if this is a valid Hollywood or Indie film about real people, made in the tradition of filmmaking, either as a documentary or a drama that cares about its characters, instead of what this really is: a sledgehammer wielded by a deranged maniac smashing your skull in with his words and pictures of oh-so-much wisdomly hate, lies, and drivel.
Stargate (1994)
Beware Amazon Prime streaming version is original bad audience-test version
The version Amazon Prime has is the 121' version without subtitles for the ancient/alien language. It's not the extended version or director's cut, but the original version shown to test audiences that got such a bad response. Audiences were confused about the plot. The problem was corrected by adding the subtitles. If you watch this version, you'll be just as confused. The dialogue between the villagers, between the scientist and the villagers explaning the origins of the Stargate, why it exists, and who Ra is, is lost on the viewer, and especially every line from Ra, including the conversations of the aliens and the important scenes between Ra and the scientist are completely meaningless. No wonder it got such bad reviews at the first showing. Nice try though, could have been a good movie, so seeing as how this is the only version I've ever seen, I give it 4 stars for effort and possibilities, including the idea of the gate, but no more since the whole backstory of the Egyptians and their sun god Ra and how they are on this distant planet is not presented in this version. Don't waste your time streaming from Prime; shame on you Amazon! Get the extended or director's cuts, or even the 116' theatrical release, with a few shots edited out which supposedly made it tighter, and best of all the subtitles.
