Emily in Paris (2020)
How do they keep renewing this
If you want a masterclass in overacting please watch this show. If you want to see stiff dialogue and a lead that cannot carry a series, please watch this show.
Lily Collins and her horrible acting have opened a window into the gaudy world of how Netflix views what it is like to be an entitled American living abroad in Paris. The plot lines are essentially Hallmark movie ripoffs. Ashley Park acts circles around Lily in every single scene they share. I really wish the roles had been reversed, it would have made for an infinitely more entertaining series. Netflix excecutives what were you thinking in Giving Lily a producer credit, it's almost like she's a nepo baby or something.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Horribly cast
Nicole kidman was the wrong choice for the role. Her blocking in her scenes was painful. Actors carried every scene she's in.
Considering this is essentially a biopic of Lucille Ball, it bears pointing out just how stiff and boring her performance was.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Awful third act
The first act was great. Second was okay, but the third descended into Hallmark movie atrocities.
Making the Cut (2020)
Spoiler: black lives don't matter
I was really disappointed how producers dealt with putting their finger on scale. People of color were railroaded
Unacknowledged (2017)
Fun till the crackpots are given screen time
Af first this documentary is mildly entertaining. Once Steven M Greer is given screen time it all goes down hill, this man is nuttier than a Pay Day. His claim to be briefing heads of state and leading figures is fairly ridiculous. Once he starts claiming to know how ultra secret organizations work and how those same organizations assassinate in order to keep secrecy, it all begs the question. Why are you still alive, lol.
Secondly, their sources are beyond questionable. Their direct quotations are given no context or whether they were primary or secondary sources. That is an issue.
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." This film does not live up to this standard.
Vi är bäst! (2013)
Wanders
We follow Bobo and her best friend Klara through their tween years. Both of these girls share little in common with their classmates and by default are relegated as misfits. The world they inhabit is not particularly cruel to them and because of this it is hard to sympathize with their radical views surrounding God and good taste.
The lack of compression in conjunction with the relative length of the film led to a lackluster ending. The events all fell into place relatively easily. I never saw a raw drive in these girls. It has to be noted that what was portrayed was not necessarily the world rejecting them but their choice to reject the world around them. Because of this these characters must compel us and win us over. The big show at the end lacked the emotional weight and significance that it could have attained mostly because the girls really didn't fight that hard for the band.
I relate to Bobo and am sympathetic to her but the film simply didn't go anywhere. The weak narrative structure necessitates a strong narrative voice which the story lacked. Bobo is interesting in that her body image issues, environment, and views give the story a lot to work with. The mousiness of her character held back the film especially considering that there was no defined antagonist acting against her or Klara.
I would not recommend this film. It is the particulars of their world that make them unique and quite frankly punk could have been substituted for any number of things and the film would not have been much different. The film does not capitalize on the rich history of punk, it is merely a window dressing.
