Action movies these days are descending further and further into an absolutely medieval level of moral and intellectual sophistication. This movie had a large component of brutal, medieval torture - not just violence, torture - which did nothing to serve the plot, really. The greatest films have deep moral ambiguity at their core. This one is straight Old Testament. The whole thing is stripped down to such a stupefied level of simplicity that it was impossible to take an interest in it.
The final scenes had a 'twist' in the sense that it didn't twist anywhere; the hero has a chance to take the high road, but doesn't, and doesn't show any reflection about it, even though her antagonist lays it all out for her. I was just baffled by this scene; was it supposed to be that he was just gaslighting her by laying out the case that revenge is pointless and restores nothing, while degrading your own character? Well the speech didn't work. It ends on a note of boasting about the creativity of her revenge. You have to be so simple that you're impressed by that, to like this film.
