Mixed·ish (2019)
Family Switch
No where near as good as Black-ish. And what happened to Rainbow's family? In Blackish doesn't she have a white mother and three black fathers (the mother is not sure who the biological father is) in the commune? Was that too hot for the show to deal with!
Underground: Minty (2017)
Wonderful
A powerful performance, the equal of any I have ever seen. Really a one woman show of unparalleled quality. I totally believed that she was Tubman from the first minute to the last. This is what acting is all about, no special effects, car chases or explosions, just the performer connecting with the audience.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Much to do about very little
Lucky that the sound track was loud loud loud because I might have taken a map otherwise. The plot is totally stupid. What the heck does Bane and his friend have against Gotham City anyway? Not much, certainly not enough to generate all this. Well, it might be considered the ultimate terrorist movie, I guess. Or maybe the ultimate Martial Arts movie. Chop, chop, chop. Batman must have chopped and punched out more than a hundred bad guys all be himself. The "not believing in guns" joke did not cover up the stupidity of the fights. Anyone of a dozen times someone could just have shot the hero and be done with it. Catwoman? What the heck is she even in the movie for. Oh yeah, she looks great just standing there. To bad she doesn't look good trying to use Martial Arts moves. An old man could take her out. Dumb story, too long, no character development, impossible fight sequences, and on and on. Special effects and other stuff were good so I had to give it a 4, which is probably more than it deserves. I am sure that 14 year olds will love it. Sorry I am a grown up.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)
Best comedy ever!
Wonderful, wonderful. Everyone in the packed theater laughed and laughed from a few minutes in to the very end of the movie. Best comedy film we have ever seen. Comedy doesn't get any better than this! We saw this film in an older downtown theater in Hingham Massachusetts with an audience of mixed ages although all adults and probably a older than the average audience for a movie not aimed at kids. The performances were great. While a comedy the attempts to deal with things like the problems of becoming old and the financial troubles of seniors were cleverly slipped in as were issues of class and sexual orientation. Didn't feel like we were being preached to at all, just unvarnished truth. With all that it was funny, funny, funny.
Meet Dave (2008)
I really really liked it!
Hey, this movie made me laugh out loud a dozen times, it is more fun than most of the big comedy flicks out there in the last five years. Come on laughs, unique special effects, a fun if improbable plot (well it is sci fiction after all). Good for the whole family to watch together with a number of subtle and not so subtle take offs. Oh, I'm sorry no overt sex and violence to speak of even with a couple of hot babes in the cast for eye candy. I can't understand the fairly low rating of 4.9, it deserves better. Especially interesting was the dual role of Eddie Murphy, playing both the space ship and the captain of the space ship. Not your usual dual role even for Murphy. Perhaps the movie just didn't have a specific audience, appealing a bit to everyone but not a lot to one group of viewers. Who knows...
Howl (2010)
Howl is Fantastic
Was only a kid when all this happened but ten years later saw and heard Ginsberg read Howl at the Unitarian Church on Arlington Street in Boston. I remember how well the reading was received even ten years after publication. The movie will remind us all what a wonderful work Howl was and continues to be. Poetry was never the same after Howl. The mixed methods presented in this movie might be a water shed for film. Let's face it the writers and director had to present a poem as a movie. It is not just about the trial, the movie is also the actual poem. (Hope that is not a spoiler.) Just the presentation is a concept that breaks new ground in film making.
