Philomena (2013)
Long Overdue!
Finally!
A movie about what went on in that time era.. a time of cruel hypocrisy, when unwed motherhood was akin to criminal activity.
Judy Dench is amazing - she assume the role completely, and portrays the lifetime trauma that has affected everyone who has been a 'victim' of having to relinquish a child to the 'system' or, in this case, 'The Catholic Church'
I found this movie heartbreaking, but at least I now have a sense of satisfaction that these atrocities have finally been brought out into the open.
Adopted children who were told 'their mother didn't want them' are now given the opportunity to see what REALLY happened.
Christmas Crash (2009)
Poorly Researched - Poorly Acted
I watched this movie, hoping it would get better as it progressed- just the opposite occurred, and I wished I had the sense to turn it off after the first 15 minutes. (Isn't hindsight always 20/20?)
Was ANY research done before this movie was filmed?
Unless the lakes in B.C. have suddenly become tropical, survival would have been impossible after the initial crash. (hypothermia).
Did anyone responsible for this movie do ANY research on the behaviour of wolves? Documented wolf attacks are so few as to be discounted.
As a Canadian, I am disappointed such a movie has been accredited to Canada.
Murdoch Mysteries (2008)
Most realistic portrayal of the 1900s
We came across this series by chance last year, and look forward to watching it each week. The actors do a most convincing job of bringing to life a world that our grandparents knew.
Portrayal of the problems that existed at the time are not 'white-washed'; instead, plots focus around such things as the (now, unbelievable) Catholic/Protestant 'problems', total male dominance in the workplace/clubs, government, extreme poverty, horrible working conditions - to name only a few. Perhaps this is the best series ever produced in Canada! The acting is superb, the sets authentic, and the plots are excellent. As the series progresses through the years, we're hoping the series will include the "Great Toronto Fire".
