Dream for an Insomniac (1996)
Almost amazing
I thought the first half of the movie was fantastic; the use of color, the eccentricity of Frankie, the main character, and just the general way in which this "conventional" romantic comedy added its own ticks and quirks (with an infusion of Frank Sinatra) held so much promise.
From this first half I was prepared to absolutely fall in love with this movie. The leads were charismatic and the chemistry was good and everything seemed in place. But everything starts unraveling in the second half; things happen too fast, things seem too absolute, emotions are strange and constantly changing (telling someone that you don't want a relationship with her... and then sleeping with your head in her lap and kissing her/holding her hand on the way home...) and things generally don't seem to progress rationally.
still, it was worth watching just for the artistic novelty and the amazing first half.
The Lake House (2006)
once it stood on its own legs, it was great
This movie is based on the S.Korean movie Il Mare (Korean Title: Siworae) and though the first half stuck too closely to the Korean version with such odd sense of time/timing (ironic) that it was actually pretty disappointing, once it found its own storyline and developed that one in the second half, it was actually really good.
There were some new twists and perspectives so ppl who've seen the Korean version wouldn't be bored...it's definitely "American-ized". By the end, I definitely felt like I'd seen a good movie (enjoyable if not Oscar-material, but hey, it never pretended to be). Anyway, I had tears in my eyes (okay, and on my cheeks too) at the end; the movie got better and better as it went along, and yay for that because I paid $8.
Bewitched (2005)
better than i thought it would be
to put it bluntly, i expected this movie to be pretty crappy and basically went for nicole kidman loyalty and a mix of boredom and more boredom.
i'm not saying it's the best movie ever or that it deserves any awards... it's more like an "8" for the kind of movie it's trying to be- a sweet little comedy that has a little romance and isn't anything to take seriously.
i was pleasantly surprised- it wasn't the load of crap i was fearfully waiting for but actually pretty enjoyable with some great laughs and just plain cuteness.
and- a little off the subject- nicole kidman looks beautiful in the film. and turned out to be a fine "samantha" recommend for some summer fluff
