Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Not as expected but a great movie with a very important message.
I read so many reviews before watching and there was so much negativity and political inferences that I nearly gave it a miss. I am so glad I watched it.
It is fable worthy of Aesop himself.
What is most clever is the number of red herrings designed, I suspect, to keep the "usual suspects" at bay.
Wonder Woman 84 is an allegory. It is about the danger of unlimited power, propaganda and greed in the hands of inappropriate people.
Dianna has been trained for her role, she has learned to accept her limitations and most importantly that truth is the most important thing. When, as a child, she cheats in a sporting event she expects to be accepted as the winner and is angry when she loses.
Later when a way to have wishes granted appears she uses it to her advantage as do many others. The wishes are almost always selfish and divisive and come with a price. People with no understanding of consequences attain power and misuse it for personal gain under the delusion that they are making the world a better place. The end result is almost the the world in global war.
Fortunately Dianna's training and mentorship allows her to realise what is really happening before it is too late.
So what is the "big bad" about which this story represents.
Social media and "big tech".
They are the 2020 "all you need to do is wish and it will come true" cult that is trying to take control of everything by offering lies and creating hatred and turmoil.
"The truth is bigger than all of us." - Diana
"No true hero is born from lies." - Antiope
Extremely well written and very appropriate for today.
Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns....take a bow
Swinging Safari (2018)
If you weren't there it will not make sense, if you were you will pee yourself
So polarising yet surprisingly so accurate.
Being a teenager in the 1970s it brought back so many memories.
What you think such things portrayed in the movie cold not possibly happen?
Just to mention a few:
Cracker fights...yep
Riding in the back of the station wagon...yep
Pissed on when stung by a bluebottle....yep
Saw beached whales blown up as they were too big to be moved...yep (Toogoom Beach QLD 1968)
"Enthusiastic" young ladies....yep
Stupid dangerous stunts involving fire and bikes/cars....yep
Being stuck in the rumpus room while the adults misbehaved...yep
Made to wear really stupid clothes....yep
High shoes for men...yep (and I am 6'2")
Everyone smoking everywhere....yep
Police drinking beer on the job....yep
Getting hurt and having adults just tell us to toughen up...yep
Drink driving everywhere all the time.....yep
All of those things I witnessed or was involved in personally.
This is a brilliant film and every time I watch it I see something new.
As I stated in the headline; if you were there it is very, very funny, if not then you will most likely think it is some sort of racist homophobic sexist slapstick debacle as it has no social justice warriors, helicopter parents, safe spaces or diversity so it could not possibly be real......but it was :)
