Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
No, not another bad episode...
Perhaps it's a good thing that our Paramount+ trial will be ending before the next series/season/whatever comes out. If I wanted to watch a musical, I've got plenty of options from which to choose. But the premise leading to this is absurd. I don't even think I can sit through this rubbish. Honestly, did you sign up to do a Star Trek series or not? I doubt this is what Trekkies were hoping for. I certainly wasn't. Like I said, if I wanted to watch Gilbert & Sullivan, I would. This is utter nonsense takes the biscuit for cringe worthiness.
The crossover was bad enough. All I can think is that I'm thankful to be nearing the end of S2.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists (2023)
Star Trek meets TikTok
I guess this was meant to appease the animated show's fans, but it has to be one of the worst episodes of any Star Trek I have ever seen. I had to force myself to get through it. Why would I? Not sure, but I guess it's because I was starting to warm to this latest incarnation. I've been a fan for decades, but TBH, I didn't watch the original animation of yesteryear, and I'm certainly not interested in the latest offering. And if this episode is any indication, I will definitely give it a pass.
This really is like watching a bunch of insipid influencers, and if I wanted to do that, I'd get a bloody TikTok account. But I don't. I'll be carrying on with the rest of S2, and I hope it isn't as annoying as this one. Please find another muse, script writers.
The Gallows Pole (2023)
Disappointing and couldn't give it the time
I'm so disappointed, as I was expecting a much better story. I agree with another reviewer (repo136) that the improvised dialogue wasn't a good choice. This is a period piece based on an actual event, and yet, I kept wondering why I feel as though I'm watching a cos play production crossed with a Tarantino film.
I relish watching original films and series, and the lack of originality these days makes me wonder if anyone has an idea that isn't a reboot or remake. I expected better from The Gallows Pole, but I couldn't even get to the end of ep. 1. Scenes really do just go on and on, as the dialogue was meandering and pointless fairly uninteresting. If you're going to produce a slow burner, you've got to keep interactions and plot lines interesting.
Beecham House (2019)
Wonderful story--slow burning, but so are some of the better ones on paper & screen.
I'm watching this for the second time since its first airing, as it popped up on Sky again, and I took it to mean that the story would continue. I have decided that I really do like the story and am disappointed to learn that it is not continuing. I woud hope that this decision would be reversed. I think there are so many positives in this production and wish we could see more period pieces that aren't merely drawing room dramas. Don't misunderstand, I do love those, but branching out into the world and showing history from viewpoints outside of the prevailing dominant culture is needed more than ever.
Please bring it back!
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Sorry they cancelled it...
You know, reading comments about the poor effects makes me laugh. I grew up with the original Star Trek and Ultraman and some Gerry Anderson, not to mention 50s/60s B-films that still have 'cult' status. They aren't the worst effects I've ever seen. And I haven't be into anime-type toons since Astro Boy, Speed Racer & Kimba. So I can't make the comparison. But then, I stopped reading comics yonks ago, and I still watch and enjoy Marvel films.
I also get the problem with remakes. I cringe over remade films and TV shows on a regular basis.
However, after feeling iffy about this series at first, I quickly got into it and was hoping it would return. I loved it! Great characters and acting, real chmistry. Just really FUN.
With all the dross that's out there, once again I am dismayed to find that another programme I actually dig bites it.
Netflix, sorry you had to act so rashly. C'est la bloody vie.
American Horror Story: Chapter 5 (2016)
I'd give it a 7 but the colonial accents are pretty abysmal
The attempted UK accents...Scots? Irish? Welsh? Transyvanian? Please don't ever do that again.
