Cropsey (2009)
Stretches the truth; could have been a lot better
Much as I admire the filmmakers' attempts to investigate the Cropsey story, they purposefully perpetuate and deepen other myths while they do it. They construct a series of concentric ideas with "the Willowbrook insane asylum" as a central point. The problem with this is that Willowbrook was never an insane asylum, and many of the investigations they link to "the old Willowbrook site" were actually in other locations and are central arguments in the conflations they make between Willowbrook, other institutions in the area, and the concept of institutions for the mentally handicapped, mentally ill and criminally insane in general. It's fair enough to use other sites as visual stand-ins for buildings that are no longer standing, but in a "documentary" one should be more careful about identifications.
Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election (2002)
Sure, it leans to the Left, but everything in the film is true.
Starting with the illegal and unscrupulous manipulation of Florida's voter registration rolls, this film follows the legal tennis match over the U.S. 2000 Presidential election. The film is Left-biased, with a majority of the commentators and interviewees being from Florida civil rights advocacy organisations.
That said, this film should anger and upset just about everyone. If you're a see-no-evil conservative then you'll think this film is all lies and propaganda; everyone else will be outraged at what the Bush campaign got away with.
The final arguments of the film about the Supreme Court seem a little flimsy, but the majority of the material presented is sound, well-documented, clearly understandable, and can be easily researched yourself if you want to pursue the matter further.
