Series 10 Episode 1

Arthur enters a pawn brokers. Later, Arthur offers to sell bikes to a "Pizza Man." Ray mentions Arthur doesn't own any bikes, but Arthur knows a man who does, Mervin. They agree a price and Mervin will deliver as soon as Arthur pays.

At the Winchester Arthur is offered some fridge freezers by Brian. Arthur initially declines, but the price is too tempting for him to turn down.

Ray is bowling with his friend's Gino and Marty. Gino's mother, Lucy, shows up with his asthma inhaler. Ray and Marty insists she stays, much to Gino's embarrassment. Then Arthur arrives, looking for Ray. Later, they meet Brian for delivery of the fridges.

The following day Arthur visits Mervin's house wanting to pay cash on delivery for the bikes. Mervin insists on cash up front. Arthur offers him a free fridge. Mervin declines. Later, Arthur calls the Pizza Man to ask for cash up front for the bikes. The Pizza Man declines.

Mervin visits the car lot to tell Arthur he can pay cash on delivery for the bikes after Arthur left a fridge brochure at Mervin's house for his wife to find. Arthur and Ray install the fridge at Mervin's.

Arthur and Ray meet Mervin at night to collect the bikes. Two men jump out of Mervin's van to surprise Ray and beat him. Mervin tells Arthur the fridge was faulty. It set on fire, damaging part of his house, and he and his wife were saved by a neighbour. He tells Arthur the money Arthur paid for the bikes he is keeping as compensation. If Arthur wants the bikes he will have to pay extra. Arthur is forced to pay his remaining money the Pizza Man gave him.

Ray puts the bikes in the lock up, with the fridges. Arthur blames Ray for the faulty fridge. Ray shows Arthur how he plugged the fridge in. They get into an argument until the fridge Ray plugged in suddenly sets on fire. Ray mentions there's no insurance, which gives Arthur an idea.

Arthur phones the Pizza Man to explain the bikes he paid for are unavailable. Arthur takes out insurance at the lock up. He meets with Ray and Dave at the Winchester to plan to rob the lock up. Arthur asks Ray to hire Marty and Gino to be to robbers. Ray refuses to help but Arthur reluctantly tells him he pawned his wife's jewellery to raise the money to buy the fridges off Brian. He needs the insurance money to buy back her jewellery, deliver the bikes to the Pizza Man, and get rid of the fridges.

Ray discusses the robbery with Gino and Marty at Gino's house. At the lock up, Arthur signs his insurance papers. Ray parks outside, close by. A second van arrives. Two men burst into the lock up in masks, and tie up Arthur and the insurance man. Arthur plays along, believing them to be Ray's friends. Ray watches the bikes being loaded into the second van. He spots a policeman nearby and has to distract him. The robbers leave and drive away, past Ray and the policeman. Ray unties Arthur and the insurance man, acting dumb. The insurance man leaves to phone the police. Arthur and Ray discuss the robbery when Marty and Gino suddenly arrive wearing tights over their faces.

At the Winchester Arthur says he will have to give the insurance money to the Pizza Man, so he is back to square one. Ray mentions they can't afford to buy the jewellery back and is certain it wasn't a coincidence they were actually robbed during a fake robbery. Ray asks Marty and Gino to make sure they didn't tell anyone about the robbery. They tell him they didn't say anything. Gino mentions his mum, and Ray notes that Gino tells his mum everything.

Arthur meets his insurance broker. He is told his insurance doesn't cover motor vehicles. Ray goes to speak to Lucy at work when he sees Mervin and her together. Arthur goes to the Winchester, and Dave tells him an angry Pizza Man is there looking for him.

Ray follows Mervin and Lucy as they drive away together. He stops by the car lot to collect Arthur. They watch Mervin and Lucy in a restaurant and realise Mervin heard about Arthur's planned robbery when Gino told Lucy. They continue to follow them to a bingo hall. Arthur and Ray approach them at a table. Mervin realises he has been caught. Arthur and Mervin go to the bar to talk. Arthur lets it be known to Mervin he is aware he is behind the robbery, but will keep quiet about his affair if Mervin returns the bikes, plus pays Arthur compensation.

Ray tells the Pizza Man his bikes are being delivered by Mervin, who was responsible for them being delayed.

At the lock up one of fridges sets on fire. When Arthur and Ray arrive a fireman informs them that a number of fridges that were plugged in suffered electrical failures and have burned. Arthur's insurance brokers arrive and are suspicious of the fire but the fireman assures them of no foul play.

Arthur buys his wife's jewellery back. Ray hopes he learned his lesson. Dave tells Arthur his wife has phoned, claiming they were burgled.

Reid assumes Arthur Daley is a false name and Arthur and Ray aren't really uncle and nephew. He tells his men to find out more about them.

Ray phones the Winchester to discover Dave has closed the club to go round the south of England looking for a country pub to buy. With Arthur's wife staying with her sister and Ray not wanting to bother his parents, they realise they are stranded in Australia. During lunch they discuss getting jobs to raise the money they need.

Reid's men go to Arthur's hotel to get information from the receptionist. They report back to Reid, who is unimpressed. He tells them to bring Arthur to him for a meeting.

Arthur and Ray go to a hostel for accommodation. Ray gets a job at a kebab stand outside Sydney Cricket Ground and a second job as a barman in a pub. Whilst there they meet a woman called Robyn, who tries selling Arthur a make up kit. He tells her her sales technique is wrong and proceeds to sell several to a group of men, then asks her who supplies her stock. Robyn takes them to a pub to meet her father, Derek Collins. Whilst there both Derek and Arthur win after betting on a horse race, so Arthur buys some solar powered radios.

Arthur and Derek sell the radios on the pier. Robyn shows Ray the sights.

Arthur and Ray return to the hotel to get their bill. After they leave the receptionist calls to tip off Reid's men. Ray goes to work. Reid's men approach Arthur on the street and take him to Reid. Reid is under the impression Arthur is a con man trying to claim the inheritance. He proposes a partnership with Arthur to sell drugs in the UK.

At Derek's house, Arthur explains Reid's offer. They try to come up with a way to make more money.

Ray and Robyn walk around Sydney and kiss. Arthur and Derek get drunk in the pub, then get stopped by the police for drink driving. Arthur returns to the hostel in a panic and tells Ray they must leave. Ray says they can't as they still have to pay the hotel bill. They sleep in Derek's storage unit.

Arthur and Derek fail to sell any electronic personal organisers. Arthur attempts to sell one to a man in the pub, who turns out to be a policeman, Sergeant Davis, who tells Arthur he is selling stolen goods and is under arrest. At the police station Davis accuses Arthur of doing business with Reid, who the police have under surveillance. Davis tells Arthur the police have spoken to Bill McCabe, who confirmed who Arthur is. He warns him to be out of Australia in 48 hours and the matter will be closed.

At Reid's house, he and several business associates are waiting for Arthur, who is late for a meeting. He gets word that Arthur was seen with the police and assumes he has informed on Reid.

Ray talks to Robyn about not being able to buy plane tickets home. She takes Ray to a travel agent. Robyn has been on a waiting list to travel to England for a long time and is near the top of the list. She asks for two tickets, but is told she will go back to the bottom of the list.

Arthur is taken to see Reid and explains who he is. Ray and Robyn return home and find Derek tied to a chair. Then Arthur is dropped off by Reid's men. Ray tells Arthur they have their plane tickets.

At the airport, Arthur and Ray say goodbye to Derek and Robyn. On the plane Ray tells Arthur they can't afford to buy alcohol as they set off home.

Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 12

Arthur and Ray are heading to Sydney, Australia. When they finally land they are met by Bill McCabe. Arthur is suffering heavily from jet lag. Bil drops them at their hotel, then goes to see a solicitor, Susan Hamilton, to offer Arthur legal representation during his inheritance claim.

Unbeknownst to Arthur and Ray a businessman, Reid, has ordered a criminal, Rod Thompson, to pretend to be a decendant of Joshua Daley, to claim the inheritance.

Arthur is under the impression the inheritance is his, so is surprised to see several Daley's attend a meeting with Geoffrey Evans. Later, Arthur yells at Evans, who informs Arthur he hired investigators to search for anyone with a connection to Joshua Daley.

Rod Thompson tells Reid he doesn't want to go through with the plan as there are too many people involved and he hasn't had chance to research. Reid tells him he has no choice as he has too many debts, so from now on he is Joshua Daley's illegitimate son. Rod mentions Arthur getting angry at the meeting. Reid says they will check him out.

At lunch, Ray is getting more concerned with the amount of money Arthur is spending. Arthur assures Ray he is the genuine heir to the inheritance, so there is no need to worry. Bill arrives with Susan. Ray is immediately interested in Susan.

Susan drives Arthur and Ray back to her office. They are followed by two men working for Reid. At her office she discusses Joshua Daley's estate, Paradise Springs, and whether he had had other assets.

Later, the two men break into Susan's office looking for Arthur's documents. They report to Reid that they can't find them. Reid theorises Arthur must be carrying them, so he instructs his men to find Arthur and get his documents.

Arthur and Ray tell the hotel receptionist they are going to see a family mansion. They set off driving and soon end up in the outback, with nothing around them. Arthur is navigating and Ray insists they are lost. They stop to get out and read the map. A kangaroo goes past, startling Arthur, who panics, jumps in the car, turns the key, which snaps off in the ignition, stranding them in the outback.

Bill McCabe arrives as the hotel. The receptionist tells him Arthur and Ray have gone out to see a family mansion. Bill quickly leaves.

Arthur and Ray set up cover next to their car to protect them from the sun. A large spider crawls towards them and they freeze in panic. Bill eventually finds them and steps on the spider, before driving them to Paradise Springs.

Paradise Springs turns out to be a run down house in the middle of nowhere with rusted out car shells nearby. Arthur is unimpressed. Bill tells them Joshua owned thousands of acres that is worth a fortune.

Back at the hotel, Arthur is blaming the receptionist for them getting lost when Susan arrives to tell them of the break in. Arthur shows her the documents. She tells him to put them in a safe. Arthur says he doesn't scare easily. Ray tells Arthur he is going out with Susan, and Bill leaves, so Arthur is left alone.

Bill meets with Evans and looks at the files of the claimants. He recognises Rod Thompson, and calls a friend in the police to find his address and check his vehicle registration.

The following day, whilst leaving the hotel, Arthur and Ray notice they are being followed. Ray takes Arthur's documents, tells Arthur to hide, indicates the documents to the two men before running. They chase him.

Bill visits Rod at home. Rod realises he is busted. Bill calls his friend in the police and informs him about Rod and Reid.

Arthur and Ray meet Susan outside Bill's office. The two men arrive and separate. Arthur and Susan run. One gives chase. With Bill's help Ray subdues the other man. Arthur and Susan are chased to a canal. Susan manages to push the man into the water.

Arthur meets with Evans and several other men to discover who will claim the inheritance. It is ultimately discovered Joshua had a son, and his descendant is the sole heir. Arthur is furious. Arthur, Ray, Susan and Bill say their goodbyes. Bill tells them to buy a plane ticket when they want to return to the UK.

At the hotel Ray realises Arthur didn't check the terms of their trip to Australia. They have no money, but need to buy their own return tickets, plus pay off their enormous hotel bill thanks to Arthur's carefree spending. Ray says they will have to run from the hotel. They sneak out the fire exit.

Arthur is at the market trying to buy pens from Spiky, who refuses to sell unless Arthur pays cash immediately. At the Winchester Arthur complains to Dave about his money problems. Dave forces Arthur to pay some money off his tab.

Arthur tries to withdraw money from an ATM but his card is withheld, then his car towed. As he walks down the street he notices a man following him. He also notices him on the tube.

Ray is relaxing with his girlfriend, Gloria, at her flat. Arthur arrives. Arthur tells Ray he will have to collect his car.

At the lock up, Dayglow, a contact of Arthur's, supplies him with fake parking tickets. Gloria calls asking for Ray. She tells Arthur she has been burgled and to pass the message on to Ray. Ray returns with Arthur's car. In the mirror, Arthur again sees the man following him. Ray goes to check but sees no one.

Arthur and Ray drive to Nobby Green's, a loan shark. Arthur puts a fake parking ticket on his windscreen. Arthur borrows £1,000.

In the Winchester Arthur sees the man following him enter. Arthur hides. The man introduces himself to Dave as Bill McCabe, an investigator, and he's looking for Arthur. Firstly, Ray approaches Bill to warn him off, but when Bill mentions a possible inheritance, Arthur introduces himself.

Bill tells Arthur that Joshua Daley, living in Australia, died a year ago. He had no children. Joshua's great grandfather was for a time married to Grace Daley, and lived in Wilsden. If they had any children the inheritance would go to their descendants. Arthur may be related.

Arthur and Ray meet a solicitor, Mr Muldier. Whilst waiting, Arthur finally tells Ray that Gloria was burgled. Muldier tells Arthur to check the public records to trace his family tree.

D. C. Field goes to interview Gloria. Her camera was stolen. As they talk she mentions Ray Daley is her boyfriend. Field notices an open bottle of wine. Gloria tells him to pour himself a glass. Later, Gloria and Field are drinking wine and talking. Ray returns home and is annoyed. Ray says D. I. Timmons, who doesn't drink, is coming upstairs. Field panics. Ray drinks some wine and pretends to be drunk in front of Timmons to spare Field.

Arthur, Ray and Bill go to check the public records. Arthur again applies a fake parking ticket to his windscreen. They find the correct book and find Arthur's parents names inside. Ray says they need a marriage certificate, then his father's birth certificate, which will have his grandparent's names on it. Then they can trace backwards. A passing traffic warden inspects Arthur's fake parking ticket. Arthur and Ray are told it will take two days for the certificate, which is too long.

A supervisor tells Arthur his family tree only goes back to 1837 on record. He is told to hire a professional researcher of family histories.

Arthur, Ray and Bill question Muldier for more information. Muldier tells them people in Australia are spending a lot of money to find out if Arthur has a claim, and will be going to Australia if he can prove it.

Arthur hires a researcher to look into his family tree. She tells him to check the parish records of the local church. The vicar informs Arthur the records were destroyed in an air raid fire in 1917, but the physical evidence of the gravestones are still there. Outside, Ray manages to find the grave of Grace Daley, meaning Arthur has a claim to the inheritance. Muldier gives Arthur two plane tickets to Sydney.

Arthur and Ray go to the Winchester, where Dave has thrown Arthur a celebration before he goes to Australia. Later, as Arthur is leaving D. S. Morley arrests him for the fake parking tickets.

At the police station Arthur is relaxed, which Morley finds strange. Muldier arrives and tells Arthur that a criminal record will exclude him from any inheritance on the grounds the inheritor be a person of "good character."

Ray meets with Field, reminding him of the favour he did for him previously, and asks if he can speak to Morley about the charges. Later, at the police station, Field asks Morley if anyone actually saw Arthur put a fake ticket on his car. Morley admits no one did, and a solicitor like Muldier will easily get the charges dropped.

Morley and Field go to the Winchester. Morley says he is aware of the inheritance. He says Arthur used five tickets, which have a £400 fine each. If Arthur donates £2,000 to the Metropolitan Police Benevolent Fund, he will drop the charges. Arthur agrees.

Arthur tells Ray he will be going to Australia with him.

Series 9 Episode 10

Arthur and Ray are watching dog racing. Arthur complains about not selling any cars for weeks. Ray gives Arthur the idea to hire them out.

At the Winchester Dave complains about the recession affecting business. Arthur proposes his new venture: one weeks car hire gains the customer access to the Daley car boot sale and happy hour at the Winchester.

Arthur hires Ray's friend, Winston, to help deliver leaflets. Arthur is initially concerned as Winston is black.

While Ray and Winston are posting leaflets Ray meets Linda, who invites him in for a drink.

D. S. Morley and D. C. Field discuss nine jewellery burglaries in a week. They recieve a phone call about a robbery in progress.

At the Winchester Dave gets a call from Morley to tell Arthur that Winston has been arrested.

Arthur goes to the police station to collect Winston, who was mistaken for a robber as he wandered around houses looking for Ray. Winston states it's prejudice because he is black and offers to quit. Arthur refuses to accept.

Ray and Winston are at the car lot. Linda hires a car and arranges to go out with Ray. The car lot becomes busier with more customers.

Arthur arrives back to an empty car lot. He asks where his Jaguar is, and Winston admits he hired it to a customer who gave a false address. Arthur is forced to drive a battered old Cortina.

Arthur's car is spotted by Morley speeding around London.

Arthur and Ray are at the police station. Morley and Field ask Ray to calm Arthur down, after they initially accused him of driving offenses. Arthur's car is reported speeding up the M1.

Dean Cooper arrives at the lock up hoping to buy a car off Arthur. Ray tells him there are no cars available. Winston tells Ray the car Cooper wants was only hired out for a day and they can reposes it early, and sell it to Cooper.

Arthur goes to speak to his insurance broker, Tony, about his car being stolen. Tony says a cash purchase will be a problem to trace.

Ray and Winston reposes the hire car.

Morley and Field find Arthur. They tell him his car has been spotted driving around the country. They also tell him the old Cortina he is currently driving was stolen in Brighton two months ago. Morley wants an explanation.

At the car lot, Cooper picks up the car Ray and Winston retrieved for him.

At the police station Arthur claims to have no knowledge of the Cortina being stolen. Field mentions Arthur's car has been seen in Birmingham. Arthur tells Morley that whoever stole his car must have dumped the stolen Cortina in the car lot first.

Cooper is shopping with his mother-in-law. A man, who had hired the car Ray and Winston repossessed, accuses Cooper of stealing the car. Cooper flees. The man flags down a police car and they pursue. At that moment Morley and Field are driving Arthur back to the police station. Cooper drives head-on into Morley's car, with the police car stopping beside them.

Ray and Winston pick up Linda and her friend Sarah to go for a drink.

At the police station Morley is interrogating Cooper about stealing his car. Cooper says he bought it from Arthur Daley. Field is interviewing the man who was chasing Cooper. He says he hired the car from Arthur Daley.

Ray and Winston arrive at the Winchester with their dates. Dave tells them Arthur is being held at the police station. They rush over. Whilst Winston waits for Ray and Arthur he listens as two police officers discuss a stolen ladies watch. Winston looks at a picture of the watch in a police file. Ray explains to Morley about repossessing the car. Arthur is free to go.

At the lock up Ray recieves a call that Arthur's car was seen speeding through Liverpool.

At the police station Morley mentions a car was seen parked behind a house that was recently robbed. He tells Field to check if it was on the list of cars hired out by Arthur. Field later confirms Arthur owns two cars which match the description.

At the Winchester Ray and Winston are on a date with Linda and Sarah. They go back to Ray's flat. Arthur barges in and kicks the girls out. Winston goes after them. Ray and Arthur argue and both agree to end their partnership when their latest job is over.

The following day is the Daley car boot sale. Arthur instructs Ray to retrieve as much stock from the lock up as possible to sell. Later, Ray goes to Linda's stall and buys a watch for his mum. Ray shows Winston the watch. Winston tells him it was stolen. He saw it in a file at the police station. Ray tells Arthur, but he shows no interest. Arthur gets into a taxi to go to the Winchester, but changers his mind and goes to the car lot to find Linda's address.

Ray and Winston go to Linda's house. Ray confronts her about the watch. Her brother and another man arrive and a fight breaks out. Arthur arrives. Ray throws Linda's brother out the window into the garden in front of Arthur. Morley and Field show up. Ray tells them they are behind the recent robberies. On the drive to the Winchester Arthur and Ray make up and agree to keep working together.

At the Winchester happy hour is on and the bar is full. Arthur, Ray and Winston arrive. As soon as happy hour ends everyone leaves and the Winchester is deserted.

A dejected Arthur goes outside and sees his car returning to the car lot. The car thief gets out. Arthur asks him what he has been doing with his car. The car thief tells him he has been driving it around England and it gets noisy at 130 mph, then leaves.

Last Orders at the Winchester (Mar 4, 1993)
11 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 9

At the car lot, Arthur is complaining to Ray about slow business. They go to the Winchester. Vic, the landlord of another pub, the Hat and Feathers, greets them, much to Arthur's annoyance. Dave mentions Vic wants to have a celebration to mark Dave's 25 year anniversary of taking over the Winchester, but Dave is reluctant. Arthur sees the celebration as a chance to sell merchandise.

Arthur and Ray visit Heart Attack, a former criminal and painter and decorator. Arthur offers him a job to redecorate the Winchester.

Arthur and Ray make a deal with Barry, a wine seller, to provide commemorative bottles of wine for the anniversary.

At the Winchester, Heart Attack has plans to redesign. Dave is concerned. Arthur tells him to just apply new paint, and to also knock a wall down in the storage room to create new space. Dave didn't agree to the wall being knocked down but Arthur reassures him it will be fine. Vic arrives as Arthur and Ray are leaving. Heart Attack hides from Vic and asks Dave how long he has been coming to the Winchester.

At the lock up, Barry shows Arthur and Ray the new wine labels. Arthur reveals a souvenir Winchester t-shirt and tie.

At the Winchester, Arthur, Ray, Dave and Vic inspect where Heart Attack removed the wall from the storage room. Ray notices cracks in the wall that run up and across the roof.

Ray goes looking for Heart Attack but his wife says he has disappeared.

At the Winchester, a surveyor is inspecting the damage. The wall that was removed was load bearing and should have been replaced with an RSJ. It's too late to put one in now and the cracks are from the pressure on the foundations. It will cost £30,000 to repair. Knocking down the wall violates the terms of the insurance policy and until it is fixed the Winchester will have to be closed. Dave and Ray blame Arthur, who says he will come up with a plan.

They are forced to drink at the Hat and Feathers. Dave says he has £7,000. Arthur will match it. Plus, the sale of two cars for £5,000 makes £19,000. They will have to raise £11,000. Vic takes Arthur and Dave to a private function room. Ray flirts with a barmaid, then his girlfriend Gloria arrives.

In the function room the Winchester locals blame Arthur for its closure. Gloria suggests a fund raising event to raise the remaining money. They propose a football match against the police and a charity auction after the game. Arthur is forced to buy everyone a drink.

Vic makes a phone call in a private room to D. C. Thorp.

At Ray's flat, Ray and Gloria are hinting for Arthur to leave. He says he won't get in the way.

One of the Winchester locals, George, leaves the Hat and Feathers and is arrested by Thorp.

Ray visits the police station to ask D. C. Field if the police will provide a team for the charity match. Field agrees. Thorp overhears and is rude to Ray, but Morley instantly agrees to the match also.

Arthur visits a talent agent, Monty, to hire a celebrity to appear at the event, but it proves to expensive.

At the Hat and Feathers the group discuss the problems they are having: George being arrested. No celebrity. Limited donations for the auction. Dave says he is looking for a new job.

At the football match Ray and Dave note that four Winchester regulars have been arrested. Ray confronts Field, who says it is nothing to do with him or Morley.

As everyone gets ready for the game Arthur gives a team talk. There is a knock on the door. It is Heart Attack. Arthur, Ray and Dave take him into the toilets for an explanation. Heart Attack gives them a bag full of money that he stole from Vic's pub. He explains that Vic is a police informant and is the reason Heart Attack was sent to prison last time. The money he stole from Vic is the money the police pay him. Heart Attack says there was £10,000 in the safe. They wonder what to do with it with so many police outside. Morley enters. Arthur throws the bag full of money to Heart Attack and tells him to get changed.

Thorp receives a phone call from Vic about his stolen money. Thorp says it's not his problem.

The match is about to start. Morley is the referee. Gloria approaches various people in the crowd to speak to them. Morley and Field argue over a decision and Field is sent off.

Vic goes to Heart Attack's house but his wife won't let him in.

Morley sends more players off. Winchester players go down injured and Arthur and Dave give them alcohol to carry on. At half time Arthur tries to hide the bag of money. He sees Vic arrive, looking for Heart Attack. Arthur instructs Heart Attack to collapse on the pitch to get the match abandoned.

Heart Attack is put in an ambulance as Vic watches. Arthur puts the bag of money in the boot of his car. Arthur drives to the hospital. He returns later to announce Heart Attack will be fine.

As the auction starts Gloria has arranged for people to bid excessively so the Winchester makes over the £10,000 Heart Attack stole. Morley and Field are suspicious.

Vic goes outside. Arthur follows him and informs him he knows he is a police informant. Arthur tells Vic to quit his pub and leave or he will tell everyone what Vic has been doing and Dave will run the Hat and Feathers until the Winchester reopens.

The Roof of All Evil (Feb 25, 1993)
10 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 8

Arthur's latest business venture is Daley Into Space, satellite dish installation. Arthur is buying all the equipment from Gunter, a German contact. When Ray struggles with the complex equipment and German instructions, Arthur tells Ray he knows an expert, Logie Lawson.

They visit Logie, whose house is fitted with seemingly faulty electrical equipment. Arthur offers Logie, a former criminal, a job as the dish installer. Logie seems confident the work should be easy. Arthur tells Logie that Ray will be helping him.

At the Winchester Arthur talks Dave into purchasing a dish at a reduced price. Later at the lock up, Arthur receives a call about a problem with a dish installation. Arthur drives to where Ray and Logie are installing a dish. Arthur informs them they are at the wrong house. They should be on the next street. The angry owner of the house arrives home and Arthur has to talk his way out of trouble.

Arthur is having doubts about Logie. Ray tells Arthur he took a new order for a dish from Franko "Fingers" Rossetti. Arthur panics and tells Ray that Fingers has a terrible temper and got his nickname from collecting peoples fingers. Arthur wants to cancel the job. Ray refuses. Ray tells Arthur he knows Fingers daughters, Sophia and Isabella. Arthur summises Ray took the job because he likes Sophia, which Ray dismisses as Sophia is married and Isabella was a child the last time he saw her.

Arthur and Ray arrive at Fingers house to witness him yelling at a man and telling him to never come back. The man drives away. Fingers is happy to see Ray and Arthur. Arthur is very nervous. A grown up Isabella says hello to Ray. It was her boyfriend her father told to leave. Fingers says he must protect his daughter. Arthur attempts to get out of the job by telling Fingers it is very expensive and he should find someone else. He dismisses Arthur's concerns.

Back at the lock up Arthur remains insistant Ray took the job because of an attraction to Isabella, which Ray denies. At the Winchester, Arthur, Dave and some customers watch the installed satalite TV in silence, as Logie can't get the sound working properly.

Ray meets Isabella. She asks him to find an old school friend, Steve Johnson, her boyfriend. Ray guesses Steve is the man Isabella's father chased from his house. She tells Ray she and Steve are going to get married but her father doesn't like him due to his past reputation. Isabella says Steve wants to end the relationship because of her father and she can't contact him. Arthur drives past and sees Ray and Isabella together and assumes they are on a date.

At the lock up Ray takes a call from Isabella. Arthur remains suspicious. Later, whilst Ray and Logie work on the installation, Arthur drinks with Fingers. Isabella sneaks out to Ray to ask for an update. He has no news yet. Fingers invites Arthur clay pigeon shooting. Arthur sees Ray climbing a ladder outside, assumes he is going to Isabella's room and rushes out to knock Ray off the ladder.

Later, Isabella leaves a letter for Ray before running away from home.

At the Winchester Ray nurses a sore head. Arthur tells Logie he needs a gun for clay pigeon shooting.

Ray locates Steve playing pool. Steve tells Ray he and Isabella are finished because of her father. The following day whilst Ray is installing the dish he is detained by Fingers men.

Logie gives Arthur a gun for clay pigeon shooting. Fingers tells Arthur he has invited some friends to his house later that night to watch football on his new dish. Arthur discovers the gun Logie gave him is an old antique. Fingers is amused and offers Arthur the use of his gun. Ray is brought to Fingers with the letter.

Back at the house Fingers questions Ray and threatens him. Ray tells him he has been helping Isabella and he isn't afraid of Fingers before leaving. Arthur can't stop Ray, leaving Arthur and Logie on their own. Ray returns to speak to Steve playing pool. He tells Steve Isabella has disappeared.

Logie only gets a few steps up the ladder before freezing and revealing he is afraid of heights. He won't let go of the ladder. Fingers tells Arthur he will be very upset if he and his friends can't watch the football match later. Fingers tells Arthur he can get to the roof through the attic. Arthur and Logie climb out the attic window onto the roof and Logie immediately freezes. They abandon their attempts to install the dish but find the attic window has closed and locked behind them, leaving them stranded on the roof.

Ray and Steve find Isabella at an old schoold hang out. Steve tells Isabella he didn't want them to break up, but her father will never accept him. Isabella says they never have to see her father again but Ray intervenes. Ray returns to see Fingers to tell him Isabella is leaving home to marry Steve and will contact her father later. Fingers says if she runs off they are finished, but Ray argues the case for Steve and for Fingers to accept him for his daughters sake.

Finger's friends arrive for the football. Arthur begins to throw roof tiles down to the ground to attract attention. After being rescued Arthur apologises to Fingers, who points out the tiles only hit one car windscreen, which happens to be Arthur's Jaguar.

At the lock up Arthur maintains he is retired. Ray is sceptical, saying it was a sudden reaction to Hapless Harry's bragging and he will regret his decision.

Ray begins to streamline the business, including buying a computer. His first few business deals are a success. He is then visited by an old acquaintance of Arthur's, Mr Brook, known as Bechers, who purchases a mini Venus de Milo statue. Ray informs him Arthur has retired and he is now in charge.

Bechers contacts a theif, Pete and they walk past a house. Bechers tells Pete the house has no alarms and what they want is in the back bedroom.

Ray's business deals begin to take a turn for the worse. He has to offer discounts to make sales and ignores the advise of Flash, an experienced furniture salesman, over which items he should buy and overpays for them.

Arthur denies it and they argue, before Arthur storms away. Arthur returns to Bert's allotment. Bert takes Arthur for a day out to a large country mansion. They walk around the gardens and get lost in a hedge maze. Arthur gets angry and finally admits he made a mistake to retire, before a boy offers to show them the way out if they pay.

At the lock up a man called Harold comes to see Arthur to sell him jewellery. Ray tells him Arthur has retired. Harold shows Ray the jewellery and tells him Arthur always bought what he was selling. They negotiate and Harold agrees to Ray's offer. Later a blonde woman, Janice, enters the lock up and tells Ray she is looking for Arthur because he often sells her jewellery. Ray is pleased. Some time later Harold returns with more jewellery he tells Ray he forgot. Included is the piece Bechers put in his pocket. Ray agrees a price to buy.

Arthur returns to the lock up intending to tell Ray he wants to return. Ray beats him to the punch and asks him to end his retirement. Arthur agrees. Ray tells Arthur about buying jewellery from Harold and selling it to Janice. Arthur tells Ray they are couple of con artists. Harold overcharges the second time, but Janice will never return. Ray tells Arthur Harold sold him the second items for the same price. Arthur is immediately suspicious of the jewellery. There is a knock at the door. Arthur hides the jewellery. The poluce enter claiming they recieved a tip off that Ray is in possession of stolen goods. They search the lock up but find nothing.

It is revealed Bechers hired Harold and Janice to entrap Ray with the stolen jewellery.

Arthur and Ray attempt to discover who set them up. They visit some of Arthur's contacts before going to see Delilah, an old girlfriend of Arthur's, who specialises in illegal jewellery. He shows her the jewellery piece. She tells him Bechers is involved with those items. Arthur has Delilah make a paste copy of it. Returning from Delilah's in the morning, Arthur tells Ray it was Bechers, whom Arthur had had several run ins with in the past and Bechers was obviously trying to get even. Arthur tells Ray he will contact Bechers to meet. Meanwhile, Ray will go to Bechers office and put the original stolen item in a drawer.

At the lock up, Bechers arrives as Arthur is finishing his tip off to the police. Arthur shows Bechers the items Bechers had Harold sell to Ray, including the paste copy Delilah made. Bechers declines, telling Arthur he doesn't handle these types of items. Arthur acts disappointed. Bechers asks Arthur if he will be in his office all morning. Arthur confirms he will be. Bechers tells Arthur he will have some other people call round. Arthur acts pleased.

Later, Ray returns to the lock up. Arthur tells him Bechers will have tipped off the police again and they will be raided a second time, but he has contacted the police about the real stolen jewellery Ray planted at Bechers. Arthur surmises Bechers will be sorry he messed with the Daley's. They will leave a note on the door for the police and head to the Winchester. Ray tells Arthur he couldn't have done it without him.

Gone with the Winchester (Feb 11, 1993)
9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 6

At the Winchester, Dave wants to talk to Arthur about his lack of investment in the club. Arthur claims the recession has limited his money whilst also considering spending on his wife's back garden. Dave is unimpressed. Arthur tells Dave his wedding anniversary is coming up. They continue to argue over money. Jimmy the Jeweller arrives, to Arthur's surprise, and he and Dave quickly leave.

Arthur and his brother, Bert, go and pick up their friend Toby "Jug" Johnson, who is being released from prison after 15 years. They go to Len's Hairdressers so Toby can get a haircut. Later, they arrive at the Winchester. Ray and Dave are there. Toby falls down drunk before giving Dave a hug. Ray is unimpressed with Toby but Arthur tells him Toby took care of Bert, Ray's dad, when he was in prison. Arthur tells Ray they were all in a gang together growing up, the Brentford Back Handers.

Later, a very drunk Toby is taken to Ray's flat to sleep on the sofa. Ray arrives home with his girlfriend Gloria. When she sees Arthur, Bert and Toby in Ray's living room she leaves. Ray wants Toby out but Arthur tells him it's the only option.

The following day a hungover Arthur and Bert return to Ray's flat. He insists Toby is gone immediately. Arthur tells Ray that Toby is staying with him and Ray is his temporary minder to keep him out of trouble.

Arthur is at Len's Hairdressers. Len reminisces about some old Back Hander stories Toby told him, where Arthur got in trouble, and suggests Dave was the reason behind them. Arthur brushes them off, but appears annoyed.

Arthur takes Toby to a cafe for breakfast. He brings up the stories Len told him and presses Toby to confirm Dave was behind the incidents. Toby tells Arthur he can't talk about them as it goes against the code of the Back Handers to "not blow the whistle on a member of the Back Handers." Toby's refusal to talk only deepens Arthur's suspicions about Dave's involvement.

Arthur meets with Bert and confirms his belief Dave had betrayed him years ago. Arthur tells Bert he can't confront Dave because of the code of the Back Handers. Ray and Toby are in the Winchester with Dave. Arthur arrives and ignores Dave, who again mentions Arthur's investment in the club. Arthur becomes annoyed with Dave, much to Dave's confusion. Arthur leaves and sees Jim the Jeweller outside entering the rear of the Winchester. Toby and Ray leave. Arthur sneaks into the club and overhears Dave and Jim the Jeweller talking cryptically about Arthur, saying "Arthur won't know what hit him."

Toby and Ray are at Loftus Road, QPR's football ground. Toby notices Ray's dislike of him and tells him to show him some respect. Ray's attitude towards Toby softens as they talk.

Arthur and Bert meet in the back of Bert's taxi. Arthur assumes Dave is attempting to remove him as a shareholder in the Winchester. Bert can't believe it. Arthur says his friendship with Dave is over. Arthur visits Toby, who is looking at some old photos. Arthur sees one of him and Dave.

Arthur and Ray are shopping in the supermarket. They bump into Dave. Arthur continues to ignore him. Dave attempts to be friendly and asks Arthur what the problem is. Arthur leaves. At their car Ray reminds Arthur that Dave is his best friend. Arthur tells him he has discovered Dave has been betraying their friendship for decades. He then sees Dave meeting Jim the Jeweller and another Back Handers member, Mickey.

Arthur and Ray go to a pub, where a drunk Arthur insists the Back Handers are forcing him out of the Winchester. Ray takes Arthur back to his flat but Arthur disappears. Ray spots the picture of Arthur and Dave, torn in half.

Drunken Arthur goes to the Winchester. He reminds Dave of an old Back Handers rule of tearing of a members shirt button instead of having a fight. Arthur rips buttons off Dave's shirt for the past incidents he holds Dave responsible for. Dave is still confused about Arthur's sudden change in behaviour and he bars him from the Winchester.

The following day Arthur takes Ray to a new club, Arthur's Palace, that he has invested in with Toby. Ray is concerned about where he got the money to invest. Ray quickly summises Arthur is doing it as payback against Dave, which Arthur denies. Ray refuses to get involved as Dave is his friend. Arthur hires Bert to work at the club, but Ray still refuses to help.

Opening night at Arthur's Palace is very busy as they are selling drinks for half price. The Winchester is deserted. Arthur and Bert shop for alcohol at a cash and carry. Arthur runs in to Dave. Again they argue.

The Winchester continues to suffer from lack of customers. Ray goes to see Dave, wanting answers. Ray suspects Toby is behind the fall out between Arthur and Dave. Dave is initially reluctant to talk but confirms Toby isn't to be trusted.

Arthur's Palace is busy again. Toby and Arthur can't get the beer pumps to work so Dermott, another barman shows them the problem, but when he turns them back on the pressure is set too high and beer sprays out of the pumps, all over the bar and customers. Arthur raises concerns about the money they are spending. Toby tells him to keep calm.

At the lock up Ray finally snaps at Arthur for his behaviour and the money he is spending on his new club, insisting both he and Dave will go out of business. Arthur agrees to meet with Dave at a neutral venue for a business meeting.

Dave and Arthur meet at a resturant. Dave tells Arthur to close his club. Arthur suggests they stop all price cuts and promotions and let the customers decide which club will win. They shake hands. As they leave Ray arrives and quickly drives Arthur away. They go to Arthur's Palace to discover Toby has stolen all the money and vanished. Arthur send Ray away.

Later, Dave comes to see Arthur. Dave tells Arthur it was Toby who was behind the incidents from years before that Dave was being blamed for. Arthur tells Dave he was suspicious as he saw Dave sneaking around with old Back Hander members.

Back at the Winchester Arthur is greeted by all the Back Hander members, apart from Toby, and they give Arthur gifts for his wedding anniversary, which they had secretly been planning all along.

Opportunity Knocks and Bruises (Feb 4, 1995)

Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 5

Arthur attends a Senior Citizens Neighbourhood Watch meeting. Also present is D. S. Morley. Arthur has been hired to supply security equipment, which turns out to be telescopes. Morley is baffled but everyone else at the meeting seems keen.

At the lock up Arthur wants Ray to move the many boxes of telescopes taking up space, but Ray is late to meet his girlfriend, a nurse called Amanda. Arthur gives Ray a beeper so he can contact him anytime. Ray leaves. He heads to the hospital where Amanda lives and sneaks past the night porter up to her room. She tells him she has to go back to work and will be finished for 5am.

Later, Amanda phones Ray to wake him and he returns to her flat but she falls asleep in a chair. Ray makes an early start at the lock up, emptying many of its contents out and putting them into a skip his friend has loaned him for a few days. Arthur arrives and is annoyed at Ray for throwing away merchandise, but Ray claims it is all rubbish that no one would buy. Arthur attempts to sell the items to a contact, "Second Hand" Cecil.

At the lock up Ray talks to Amanda on the phone. Arthur pages him. Ray drives a van containing the merchandise and meets Arthur and Cecil. Cecil refuses the merchandise. Arthur's next idea is to sell the merchandise to Alexie Nolan, a traveller who operates a fun fair.

D. S. Morley recieves a call from Mrs Mitchell of the Senior Citizens Neighbourhood Watch, asking him to collect the telescopes and pay Arthur. Morley is annoyed.

Arthur and Ray spend time at the fair. Arthur pays for them to go on the ghost ride. He doesn't notice the cashier mixes different currency into his change.

Later, Ray sneaks away from Amanda's room to avoid the night porter. He drives to the lock up just as D. S. Morley and D. C. Field are leaving after collecting the telescopes. Arthur tells Ray they need to deliver the merchandise to Alexie at the fun fair.

At the fair Arthur asks Alexie for payment but Alexie offers him a deal. They go to the fruit machines. Alexie tells Arthur they are devised to pay out jackpots of £50, but only after £400-£500 has been paid into them. Alexie tells Arthur they have a 1000% profit ratio. He offers Arthur any machine he likes, plus £600 for Arthur's merchandise. Arthur agrees. Ray is unhappy and tells Arthur he let Alexie talk him out of their original deal.

Alexie takes Arthur and Ray to where they keep the machines and tells them to take any they like. There are no fruit machines evident, but Arthur finds some hiding in the back, under cover. Ray suspects Alexie didn't want Arthur to find these.

At the Winchester Morley has Field pay Arthur. Morley sees the new fruit machine installed and puts money in to play, then immediately tells Arthur he is under arrest for not having a gaming license. The fruit machine pays out a jackpot. Morley inspects the coins and notes they are Irish coins. Morley insists Arthur gives him £50 for his jackpot win. Dave gives Morley £50 from the till and Morley and Field happily leave.

Arthur sits in his car at traffic lights. A boy starts cleaning his windows so Arthur tips him. The boy tells Arthur he doesn't accept Irish money. Arthur goes to Rays flat and they deduce the Irish money is coming from the fun fair.

Arthur and Ray sneak back to the fair. They open a machine to remove some coins, which are Irish. Arthur tells Ray about £200,000 in coins being stolen in the Dublin Mint Robbery in 1988. Arthur speculates the money is being smuggled through the fun fair and slowly being passed through the fruit machines to not raise suspicion. Ray tells Arthur that Alexie will soon realise Arthur took one of his machines. Arthur tells him they will give the machine to the police.

At the Winchester Dave has removed all the Irish coins from the machine and taken them to the Irish Trust Bank. He returns to the Winchester to find Arthur and Ray waiting for him wanting to know where the fruit machine has gone. Dave tells them Morley has taken it.

Arthur and Ray go to a hotel where a charity event is to be held and Morley is installing the fruit machine. Arthur tells Morley the machine is rigged, but Morley won't let him have the machine.

Arthur plans to win the money back before the police are aware of the Irish coins inside by continuously playing the machine so it keeps paying out jackpots. Meanwhile, the manager of the Irish Trust Bank has been suspicious of the coins Dave brought in and has been tracing their origin before alerting the police. Morley and Field go to the Winchester. Morley wants to know where Arthur got the machine.

Arthur arrives at the hotel wearing a suit and a money belt containing £600 in coins. He starts playing the fruit machine. Ray arrives at the Winchester. Morley and Field are there. Ray tells them Arthur is at the charity event. Morley tells Ray that Arthur is going to be arrested for his involvement with the coins but Ray insists he can prove Arthur's innocence.

Ray sets up another deal with Alexie to buy a machine and reveals Arthur took one previously. Alexie threatns Ray at knife point for Arthur's whereabouts. As Arthur continues to play the machines his behaviour becomes more erratic. Ray calls his beeper, but Arthur throws it on the ground and stomps on it.

Alexie and some men arrive at the hotel. Morley tells Alexie where Arthur is, while several undercover police wait in the hotel lobby. A scuffle breaks out. Alexie's men are arrested. Alexie escapes, Ray chases him. They fight in the bathroom. Ray eventually punches Alexie several times into a toilet stall. Alexie is arrested.

Later, Ray tells Morley that Arthur took a wrong machine by accident and is trying to win back the stolen money contained inside. Ray wants to tell Arthur it is all over but Morley stops him.

Morley and Field happily watch as Arthur continues to play the machine.

Looking for Mr. Goodtime (Jan 28, 1993)

Warning: Spoilers
Series 9 Episode 4

Arthur and Ray attend a motor trade dinner. Arthur is tasked with rigging the raffle so the guest speaker, Billy Mortimer, a former footballer, wins. Arthur is asked by a business associate, Sid, if he still wants to buy a new Jaguar and is informed of a small company, Good Time Motors, selling one. Arthur phones Dave at the Winchester and asks him to call the manager, Tony, and put Arthur's name forward as a possible buyer.

The following day Arthur and Ray are selling red lightbulbs in a restaurant in Chinatown. When Arthur and Ray leave Arthur has Ray meet him in an hour, but doesn't mention where he is going. An hour later Ray sees Arthur exiting a door on a side street. Once Arthur has walked away Ray looks at the names on the buildings intercom. Ray picks Arthur up but he is vague about what he was doing. They look for Good Time Motors but can't find it.

Sid comes to the car lot. Ray goes to fetch Arthur from the office when he looks through the window and sees Arthur performing some strange exercises with his arms and mouth. Ray opens the door and Arthur instantly stops and acts defensive. Sid shows them a big dent at the rear of his car and tells them he hit a lamppost that has a preservation order and the council says he has to replace it. He tells Arthur it is a special lamppost with an octagonal head, and money is no object. Arthur says he will see what he can do.

Ray tells Arthur he will take the lightbulbs to Chinatown and notes Arthur has been behaving strangely. Arthur claims he is fine, will deliver the lightbulbs and meet Ray at the Winchester. Arthur is driving at night time. He stops to look at a lamppost, is approached by a woman asking if she can do anything for him and then three policemen approach him. One trips over Arthur's foot and hits the ground whilst the other two arrest him for assaulting a police officer and contravening the sexual offenses act.

Later, Arthur is in a holding cell. When a policeman comes to get Arthur he calls him "the curb crawler." Arthur speaks with the two arresting officers, Tomkins and Reed. They tell Arthur they can't get hold of his wife at home and they found boxes of red lightbulbs in the back of his car.

At the Winchester Ray receives a phone call about Arthur. Arthur is charged with assaulting a police officer during arrest and solicitation for prostitution. Ray picks Arthur up from the police station. At the Winchester Arthur explains the situation to Ray and Dave, telling them he got out of his car to check a lamppost then thought he was being mugged. Then a policeman tripped over his foot and he is being charged with assault.

Arthur and Ray go to see a solicitor, Lockwood, who tells them Arthur is going to be charged on three counts. Lockwood tells Arthur a Jaguar was seen driving around the area. Ray says they were looking for Good Time Motors. Lockwood tells them it would be useful for their defence if they could find the owner.

Arthur goes to the hospital to have his foot examined and is told he has a badly sprained Achilles tendon and is temporarily in a wheelchair.

Tomkins and Reed go to see Morley and Field to inform them about Arthur. Morley laughs at the charges and tells them they have the wrong man. Tomkins and Morley both explain to their respective partners they have known each other for years.

Arthur, Ray and Lockwood arrive at the police station. Arthur is in his wheelchair. Arthur gets into an ID line up. An old woman with a walking stick is brought in and asked if she recognises any of the men. She ID's Arthur and says he asked her if she wanted a good time in his motor, but Arthur states he was asking for Good Time Motors. As Arthur leaves the police station, Lockwood tells Arthur things aren't looking good.

Later Ray sees Arthur again leaving the door up the side street. Ray notices Tomkins and Reed are following Arthur and sees them approach the door, looking at the intercom and taking notes. At the lock-up Ray hears Arthur making strange vocal noises in his office. Sid arrives to cancel his order for the lamppost. Arthur asks him to be a witness for him and to mention Good Time Motors. Sid declines, saying it will ruin his business.

Lockwood goes to see Morley and Field, summoning them to give evidence on Arthur's behalf.

Ray and Dave arrive at the lock-up. They sees Arthur practising some strange vocal exercises in his office. Dave tells Arthur they have arranged a big night out for a meal after his trial. And if Arthur gets sent to prison Dave gets his deposit back, so it's a win-win.

Lockwood appeals to Arthur to change his mind about defending himself. Arthur tells Lockwood they still can't find Good Time Motors. Lockwood also mentions the mysterious visits Arthur has been making, and not telling anyone what they are about. Arthur demands privacy. Ray continues to look for Good Time Motors.

Arthur visits Morley and Field. Arthur wants to go over his questions for the trial. Morley refuses and tells Arthur they are only doing it as they are being forced. Arthur tells them he will have to treat them as hostile witnesses. Morley angrily tells him not to be so stupid as they are Arthur's witnesses.

In court, Tomkins is giving evidence, saying they saw Arthur driving around the area.

Ray enters a workshop with the title "Simpsons Antiques" above the door. A man is inside and Ray tells him he is looking for someone called Tony at Good Time Motors. The man confirms he is Tony, but never got around to changing the sign outside.

In court Tomkins tells the prosecuting counsel that they have been unable to locate Good Time Motors. Ray brings Tony to court to give evidence. Lockwood informs Arthur. Ray goes to Arthur's secret meeting place. Tomkins states Arthur was seen leaving a building in soho that has unemployed prostitutes living there. Ray is in a taxi with a flamboyantly dressed man, Ashley.

Arthur calls the Chinese restaurant owners as witnesses. Outside the courtroom Dave and Tony wait with Field and an agitated Morley. On the witness stand Arthur asks Dave about Good Time Motors. Dave says he tried calling them about a dozen times. Ray and Ashley arrive at court. Morley rants at Ray. Arthur panics when he sees Ashley, who has come to give evidence on Arthur's behalf. Arthur refuses to call Ashley as a witness. He calls Tony, who confirms he was selling a Jaguar, like Arthur's, and had been driving it around the area for a few days before Arthur was arrested.

Ashley is called as witness. Arthur jumps out of his wheelchair to yell at Ray, then claims it is a sign he is able to walk again. Morley still waits to be called, telling Ray he will destroy Arthur when he is on the stand. Ashley gives evidence and says he gives private speech lessons and Arthur has been a student of his for five weeks. When Arthur is asked why he didn't reveal this evidence to help his case Ashley says he asked Arthur to keep his teaching quiet, as a once famous actor he was now making a living teaching. When Arthur met him he recognised him immediately and Ashley begged him to keep his identity secret for fear of publicity and ridicule. Arthur agreed, but Ashley was only too happy to help when Ray came to see him to explain Arthur's situation. The case is dismissed. Ray asks Arthur why he was having speaking lessons. Arthur says if former footballers like Billy Mortimer can make £500 per night for a speaking engagement then so can he.

Arthur and Ray leave court. Morley is still impatiently waiting to be called as a witness.

Arthur announces his latest business venture, the Daley Post, a courier service. Ray questions the people Arthur has hired, but Arthur tells Ray that a new employee, Rabbit, is London's oldest dispatch rider. Ray tells him the courier industry is very competitive.

The lock-up is busy with couriers coming and going. Trish is working on dispatch, using Arthur's old equipment. Arthur gets a call from Gunter, complaining about some fake London street signs Arthur sold him. Ray is out in London pitching the Daley Post, trying to get new business. Arthur phones D. S. Morley, trying to sell him Daley Post business.

Ray enters Laura Kaye's Modelling Agency. The woman in charge, Susie, agrees to give the Daley Post a trial. Ray admits it's his first account. Then a man, Conway, aggressively enters, looking for someone. Susie tries to calm him. Ray steps in and tells Conway to leave.

Rabbit and Trish inform Arthur there is a problem with his equipment. Ralphy and Keef Warnock pay Arthur a visit. Rabbit tells Arthur they run most of the courier firms that side of town, plus other things.

Susie tells Ray about Conway being obsessed with a model, June Granger, who they used to represent and who once did a nude photoshoot and Conway wants to get hold of the pictures as he is paranoid the newspapers will get them. Ray offers to help if he can.

Ralphy and Keef tell Arthur they have too much work and give him a list of client names. They tell Arthur different courier services have to work together to keep the clients happy. Ray and Susie are going on a date. They stop by Ray's flat and discover Arthur is using it to store Daley Post stock.

At the lock-up, Raplhy and Keef return to give Arthur another list of clients names. Arthur tells them their dissatisfied clients are keeping the Daley Post very busy.

D. S. Morley and D. C. Field show up at the lock-up, just in time to see the Warnock brothers leaving. Morley wonders about the connection between Arthur and the Warnock brothers.

At the Winchester Dave mentions to Ray he thought the Daley Post was a legitimate business. Ray says it is. Dave says he heard Arthur was working with the Warnock brothers. Ray says they supply most of Arthur's clients. Dave tells Ray he is supposed to look after Arthur.

Ray checks the client list and informs Arthur it isn't legitimate. Some of them don't exist. Arthur dismisses his concerns. Ray asks where he will send the bill. Arthur defends the client list and mentions Susie complaining because they have lost her parcel, and tells Ray to deal with her.

Ray returns to the modelling agency and catches Conway trashing the office, looking for the photos. Susie and Laura Kaye are present. Ray throws him out. Susie tells Ray the Daley Post lost the photos. Susie mentions they told Conway they gave the parcel to Arthur. Ray rushes off.

Arthur arrives at Ray's flat and Conway bundles him inside and starts looking through the stock. He tells Arthur to find the portfolio or he will hurt him. Two Jehovah's Witnesses knock at the door. Arthur invites them in. Ray arrives at the lock-up. Trish tells him Arthur went to his flat.

Morley looks at the courier roots on a map. Morley says it's interesting. Field isn't impressed.

Arthur won't allow the two Jehovah's Witnesses to leave. Conway sits quietly, getting annoyed. Arthur tells them he has some bibles n his lock-up and he offers to sell them. Again they try to leave so Arthur insists on reading the bible. Ray finally arrives. He punches Conway. The Jehovah's Witnesses rush off. Conway runs off. Ray notices fake football match tickets in the parcels Conway was opening. They find further fake tickets, plus fake driving licenses.

At the police station Field tells Morley there is nothing to get excited about and the Daley Post will soon go out of business. Morley asks his secretary to phone the inland revenue.

At Ray's flat, Ray tells Arthur the Warnock brothers have conned him. Arthur tells him the stock is meant to be there for one month. Arthur decides it's time to end the Daley Post. Ray wants Arthur to turn the Warnock's into the police. Arthur refuses on principle. Ray tells Arthur to go home and he will handle it. Arthur folds his business. His employees are angry.

Ray and Rabbit drive to an old warehouse, which is the pick up point for one of the fake clients. Rabbit point out a small mail order business. Ray phones Ralphy Warnock and puts in a fake delivery order to be collected. Ray and Rabbit wait for Ralphy's driver to arrive. Ray gives him some sacks of mail and a delivery address.

Arthur drives to the police station and waits outside. The delivery driver shows up. Morley receives a call telling him a dispatch driver is outside asking for him. Morley and Field go outside. Ray joins Arthur in his car and they watch Morley, Field and the delivery driver open the back of the van and look in the sacks, finding fake tickets. Arthur and Ray bet to see if Morley works out what is going on. Morley and Field find bundles of fake tickets . They work out they are fakes from the Warnock's own print shop, delivered in the Warnock's own van. They arrest the driver. Arthur and Ray laugh, then argue over who just won their bet.

Arriving back at the lock-up the fake London street signs have been returned and dumped. A man from the inland revenue, Mr Marks, turns up claiming to have information Arthur is running a dispatch service from the lock-up. Arthur tells him he has been misinformed and ushers him outside. Ray has June Grangers portfolio, which he found down the side of his bed. Arthur tells Ray he will look after the photos. Ray refuses and says he is giving them back.

At the car lot Arthur and Ray argue over how to inflate the balloon. Ray follows Arthur into the office complaining about the jobs Arthur has him doing but Arthur tells him to do as he is told.

Arthur goes to Joey's Boxing Club to offer him some advertising on his balloon for his fight nights. Ray pumps air into the balloon at a petrol station. While there a man, Warren, approaches him showing interest in the balloon. Ray mentions his boss wants to "corner the market" in aerial advertising. Warren seems very interested.

Warren goes to see his boss, Tony Pike, at home. Pike tells Warren that Arthur is moving in on his advertising business. Warren then explains about hearing Arthur wants to "corner the market" on inflatable advertising. Pike says they need to treat Arthur to a "night on the marsh."

At the car lot Gloria is patiently attempting to take photos of Arthur and his balloon, but he annoys her by continuously telling her what to do and ignoring her suggestions to make the photos more interesting. They eventually compromise. Gloria and Ray arrange to meet at a restaurant at 8pm. He has some deliveries to make first. As Ray leaves the car lot he spots Warren sitting in a van watching him. Arthur leaves his office and Warren's van has been reversed into the car lot and the back doors are open. No sign of Warren. Arthur approaches. Warren moves behind him, shoves Arthur into the van, slams the doors and drives off.

Ray delivers the lawn mowers to Mr Ali. Warren drives on to the motorway. Arthur yells at him wanting to know what is going on. Warren says "You have trodden on the forbidden lawns." Gloria arrives at the restaurant. Ray is at the Winchester. He is on the phone trying to find Arthur. Gloria still waits at the restaurant. Dave is phoning round asking for Arthur, but has no luck. Arthur continues to ask Warren what is going on as Warren keeps driving. Dave tells Ray it is too early to go to the police and notes the time.

Ray realises he is late for his date with Gloria. Arriving at the restaurant Gloria is holding the roll of film with Arthur's photos. When Ray mentions Arthur's name she drops the film into a glass of wine. Arthur tries talking to Warren, but all he will say is "You have trodden on the forbidden lawns." Ray tells Gloria he thinks Arthur has been abducted. Gloria asks if Arthur has started anything new, anything to do with the balloon, any new faces around. Ray remembers Warren.

Ray and Gloria go to the petrol station where Ray spoke with Warren. Gloria flirts with the attendant to get some information out of him. At the Winchester, Ray and Gloria ask Dave if he has heard of Tony Pike. Dave says he has but doesn't know him. Dave then remembers Joey Bullen knows Pike. Warren drives towards a big, abandoned industrial mill and drags Arthur out of the van. Ray goes to Joey Bullen's boxing gym. It is fight night. At the mill Arthur asks Warren who Tony Pike is. Joey sits ringside. Ray approaches. A fight breaks out as Ray shouts he wants to talk about Arthur.

Joey asks Ray what he wants to know about Arthur. Gloria tells Joey that Arthur has disappeared and they suspect Tony Pike.

Tony Pike gets in his car and drives off, playing classical music. Joey tells Ray and Gloria that Pike provides fly poster advertising and if anyone else tries it Pike sends them for a "night on the marshes." Joey calls for Les, someone who has experienced a "night on the marshes." Ray puts Gloria in to a taxi. Pike stops to pick a man up. He tells him they are going to the marshes. Warren finally tells Arthur about Pike being into advertising, including balloons. Arthur talks to Warren, who tells Arthur that Pike was going to have him beaten and thinks he is stupid.

Pike and his associate drive down the motorway, classical music still playing. Les tells Ray about Pike, and how he thinks he is a gangster. Les explains what happens on the marshes. He starts to get more agitated, and tells Ray to drive to Dartford. Arthur continues to talk to Warren, trying to connect with him, and Warren admits he had a poster business and Pike turned up screaming at him, then offered him a job. Arthur enquires why Warren didn't beat Pike up as he is so much bigger. Warren admits he doesn't like violence. Warren then asks Arthur if he is trying to get inside his head. Arthur says he wouldn't dream of it.

Arthur tells Warren he has been kidnapped before as a child, by another kid. Arthur says his dad told him to stand up to the bully. Arthur tells Warren that all Tony Pike has is fear, and he shouldn't be afraid. He is better than working for Tony Pike and Pike is really scared of Warren.

Ray and Les arrive at the mill. Les refuses to go any further. Pike arrives at the mill. Ray enters the mill and calls out for Arthur. He spots one of Arthur's cigars on the floor, then Pike and his associate see Ray and confuse him for Arthur. Ray beats up Pike's associate. Pike panics and runs. Ray grabs him and tells him he is Ray Daley, and demands to know where Arthur is. Pike says he doesn't know because Warren has taken him somewhere. Pike begins to cry. Ray runs outside and shouts for Arthur, but he is nowhere to be seen.

In the morning, Ray goes into the lock up office and looks at Arthur's empty chair. He apologises to the absent Arthur, but then Arthur appears behind him and tells him not to worry and he did his best. Ray asks him what happened. Arthur asks Ray if he can drive him to the car lot. During the drive Arthur admits he has been giving Ray jobs beneath him, but no more. Back at the car lot the balloon has deflated. Arthur asks Ray for one last favour.

Series 8 Episode 4

Arthur plays poker with several men, including Big Mike and Nick Rutherford. During the last hand Nick has a chance to win but says he has run out of cash. He asks Arthur to loan him £2,000. Arthur declines. Nick tells him he has a German car, a collectors item, that he will sell to Arthur so he can see Big Mike in the game, then when he wins he will buy the car back from Arthur for £3,000. Arthur agrees. Big Mike beats Nick's hand, leaving Arthur stuck with the car. Later, Nick and Big Mike laugh about what occurred with a third man, Ashley Brown.

In the morning, Arthur and Ray are driving to an auction and Arthur tells Ray about the German car. At the auction, Arthur is bidding on furniture. The auctioneers assistant approaches Arthur to tell him he has an urgent phone call, which sounds important. He tells Arthur the furniture is expected to sell for £3,000. Arthur tells Ray to keep bidding, but not to go above £2,000. On the phone a woman tells Arthur she is at the hospital and his wife has had a baby. Arthur says that is impossible and returns to the auction and immediately bids £1,400, which is instantly the winning bid. Ray looks concerned. The auctioneer says next is lot number 45. Arthur notes that can't be right, he just bought lot 43. Ray tells him the auctioneer raced through the bidding after Arthur left and the furniture sold for £2,800. Arthur wonders what he bought for £1,400. It turns out to be a greyhound, Lightning Bertie.

In the car, Arthur blames Ray, who insists he tried to slow the bidding down. Arthur reads Bertie's race history and decides he should be able to find a buyer. Ray mentions Billy from Bradford.

Ashley Brown is with Big Mike and Nick. The auctioneer calls to tell him what happened with Arthur. Nick says "two down, one to go." Ashley mentions one of the things they all have in common is they have all been conned by Arthur over the years. What could be more natural than them getting together to con Arthur.

At the lock-up, Arthur offers Bertie to Billy for £2,000. Billy declines but will try to find a buyer. Arthur means to keep Bertie at his house in the meantime, but his wife kicks him out after causing damage.

At the Winchester, Arthur and Ray arrive with Bertie. Dave asks Arthur if he bought his furniture at the auction, but Arthur claims it was too expensive. Ray sits at a table and two men, Mark and Roger, sit close by talking. Ray eavesdrops their conversation. Mark mentions he has a customer wanting to buy a Medina iron frame upright piano, willing to pay up to £4,000, and he can't find one. Arthur walks over and they quickly leave.

Arthur and Ray are at the lock up with Bertie. Arthur says Billy has informed him Bertie ruptured a tendon and can no longer race. Arthur has the idea to put him to stud. He wants Ray to look after Bertie for the night. Ray refuses.

In the morning, Ray wakes up with Lucy, his girlfriend. When she enters the living room she is startled by Arthur and Bertie sleeping in a chair. Over breakfast Lucy tells Arthur her uncle is a bookmaker and he will know some dog trainers. Arthur recognises her as the daughter of a business associate, Bouncing Morry. He tells her if she finds him a good trainer he won't mention where she spent the night.

At the car lot, Arthur takes delivery of his German car, a Trabant. He tells Ray they need to hide it in the lock-up before anyone sees. A customer, Mr Wilson, is looking at a car. He approaches Ray about a trade, the car for a piano. Ray instinctively dismisses it, then he enquires what make the piano is.

D. S. Morley and D. C. Park observe Ashley Brown leaving Morry's shop. Park mentions Morry does a lot of business with Arthur. Morley enters the shop and asks what Ashley Brown wanted. Lucy enters from the back room. Morry dismisses Morley's enquiry. Morley asks if Ashley mentioned Arthur. Morry is reluctant to answer. Lucy encourages him to be honest. Morry says he is about to invest a large amount of money in Arthur's business. Lucy says Ashley Brown told her father not to do business with Arthur. Morry tells Morley that Ashley told him Arthur is finished and his judgement is gone, mentioning "the Trabant, the greyhound and the piano."

Ray goes to Mike's antique store. He mentions he overheard him in the Winchester saying he was looking for a Medina iron frame upright piano. Ray tells him he has one in excellent condition that he can have for £2,000 and Mike will be making a 100% profit. Mike says it a pity the customer changed their mind. Ray offers the piano to Mike, since they are so rare. Mike tells him that actually you can easily get hold of one for as little as £100. Big Mike receives news informing him Ray has been conned. Ashley Brown tells Big Mike and Nick to spread the news around so everyone knows.

At the lock-up, Arthur says regular customers are cancelling. Ashley Brown phones Arthur, wondering if he reconsidered his offer to buy out his business. Arthur dismisses him. Ashley makes a joke about the piano, which Arthur knows nothing about. Ray comes clean about the piano, which is delivered to the lock-up. Arthur pieces together how Ray was conned by Mike and Roger. Morry, watched by Ashley, phones Arthur and cancels his investment. Arthur pieces together what has been going on with the cons and why Morry has cancelled his investment. People are losing confidence in Arthur. He knows Ashley Brown is the instigator. Ray wants revenge. Arthur tells him violence won't work and they must not let anyone know they have been triple conned. Morley arrives, sees the piano, the car and Bertie and laughs at Arthur.

Arthur offers the piano to Dave for the Winchester. He takes Bertie to a stud farm. The piano gets stuck on the staircase whilst being installed at the Winchester. Ray has to cut away the banisters, much to Dave's anger. Morley arrives and gives them 48 hours to replace them. Bertie isn't performing at the stud farm. The trainer tells Arthur it could be dietary.

Arthur and Ray sit on a park bench. Arthur is downbeat. He tells Ray their situation is making him feel old. Ray feeds Bertie some sausages and lets him off the lead. Bertie then sexually assaults a female dog being walked nearby. Arthur tells to Ray to feed Bertie more sausages and return him to the stud farm.

In the Winchester, a man called Middleton, arrives looking for Arthur. Nick Rutherford is at the bar and stops Middleton as he is leaving, explaining he is a business associate of Arthur's. Later, Nick informs Ashley Brown that Middleton supplies props for movies and desperately needs a Trabant car. Production has stalled until Middleton can find one. Middleton has discovered Arthur owns one and is prepared to pay any price for the car. Nick and Ashley laugh.

At the lock-up, Ray tells Arthur he has a friend who wants to buy the Trabant. Arthur agrees to sell it for £2,000., the price he paid for it. Nick arrives at the lock-up, saying he feels bad about the poker night, and wants to make amends by buying the Trabant back. He offers Arthur £2,000. Arthur tells him he has already agreed to sell it to Ray. Suddenly, Ray informs Arthur someone called Middleton just phoned, desperate to talk to Arthur. Nick immediately offers £3,000, which Ray matches. They make competing bids until Ray offers £9,500 and says that's his best offer. Nick offers £10,000, cash in hand right there and then. Arthur accepts Nick's offer. Ray excuses himself and enters the office. With Nick gone, Arthur enters the office to apologise to Ray, who laughs and reveals Middleton was a fake that he and Lucy arranged to con Nick into buying back the Trabant.

At the Winchester, Arthur mentions Bertie is a success at the stud farm. He gives Ray a bonus and gives Dave £1,000 for some of his shares in the Winchester, and tells Dave the piano and new banisters are on him. Arthur sings "My Way" accompanied by a pianist. Morley enters, noting he thought he heard singing, but the Winchester doesn't have a music license and as far as he is concerned never will. Arthur tells Ray to fetch his chainsaw so the can remove the piano.

Series 9 Episode 1

In the lock-up Arthur buys some tapes, "101 Operatic Favourites for you to Accompany", from Fast Eddie. He plans to sell the opera tapes to executive-types in Hamstead. Ray isn't so certain. Marty Goldblum enters a pub and plays on a slot machine. He soon starts winning. Arthur talks Dave into selling some music tapes over the bar. Dave tells Arthur the Winchester has entered the 1992 Mega Knowledge Knockout Quiz, West London Section, to be held at the Winchester.

D. S. Morley is concerned about his savings. He angrily asks his partner, D. C. Field why they do the job. Can't be for the money. Field asks him what is wrong. Morley looks through a police file, suddenly gets excited and leaves his office, telling Field to follow.

At the Winchester, Dave is trying to put a quiz team together. Arthur declines. Dave mentions there is £1,500 prize money. Walter, a competitor from the Winning Post quiz team arrives to taunt Dave and Arthur, bragging about his team. Walter stirs Arthur into adding his and Ray's name to the Winchester team. Arthur tells Walter to leave.

Morley and Field are at an open prison being informed about Marty escaping. Marty visits Arthur's car lot, then the lock-up, and finds Ray unloading boxes. He introduces himself and says he is looking for Arthur. He did some work for him in the past. Ray invites him in.

Morley and Field leave the prison. Field says Marty is harmless. An angry Morley explains that he had money saved for a cottage in Whitby and a broker told him he knew how to invest it better and lost the money. It was Marty.

At the lock up Arthur informs Ray they are in the quiz. Arthur sees Marty and is delighted. He tells Ray that Marty's friends know him as "Brains".

At the police station Morley is interrogating someone about Marty. At the car lot Arthur is with a customer when Morley and Field interrupt, wanting to know if Arthur has heard from Marty Goldblum, who has escaped from prison. Marty used to mention Arthur. Arthur confirms he did know someone by that name in the past who did a financial deal for him that worked out well. Morley tells Arthur that Marty did a deal for him in 1989 and he is still trying to get back the £2,000. Morley wants Arthur to contact him if Marty gets in touch, and will be keeping an eye on him.

Arthur visits Ray's flat to tell Marty off for escaping from prison and getting Arthur involved. Marty says he couldn't stand another minute. Arthur says he has to go back and finish his sentence. Ray agrees. Marty subtly mentions he has been looking forward to the pub quiz. The following day Arthur's tune has changed and he feels Marty shouldn't give himself up before the quiz. He takes him to Ray's parents to stay, calling him Ferdinand, a Spanish business associate from Madrid, who doesn't speak any English. At the Winchester, Ray asks Arthur where Marty is and Arthur only mentions a safehouse. Ray and Dave wonder if it is worth doing all this to have Marty take part in the quiz.

Dave worries he will let everyone down. Ray is certain Morley knows they have a connection to Marty. Arthur lets it slip Marty is staying at Ray's parents. Dave says he is worried about the individual rounds in the quiz. That also worries Arthur.

At Ray's parents, Marty keeps up the pretence of being Spanish.

At the police station, Morley wonders why Arthur would risk himself for Marty. Arthur, Ray, Dave and Marty are at the library, discussing the quiz. Arthur lays out a plan for each of the categories for them to study. Their discussion is loud enough that they are eventually kicked out of the library. On the way out Arthur says he and Ray will go and scout the opposition.

Morley is obsessing over Arthur lying about Marty and wants Field to tail Arthur everywhere he goes until he leads them to Marty. Arthur and Ray are outside a pub spying on Walter and his quiz team. Ray tells Arthur he has a date, but Arthur tells him to cancel so he can study.

Arthur goes to the cinema to watch the newsreel about world events. Field is following in his car. The movie showing after is Silence of the Lambs. Arthur leaves the cinema later traumatised. At the Winchester, Arthur is still haunted by the film. He tells Dave he only stayed to wait for the pathe newsreel, but apparently they haven't run them for years. Field waits outside a health club for Arthur. Ray and Marty arrive in a van and sneak inside. Field calls Morley. Arthur, Dave, Ray and Marty are in a steam room. Morley joins Field and they race inside. They are forced to change into towels before they can enter. Marty is struggling in the steam. Arthur tells him to go into the pool next door, but it is ice water and Marty screams. Ray runs to help him. Ray and Marty spot Morley and Field.

They both jump into the pool and hide under the water. Through the steam Arthur and Dave spot Morley and Field. Morley wants to know where Marty is. Field notes Ray isn't there. Morley says they have escaped, but Ray returns on his own and sits down on a lounger. Field runs to look for Marty.

At the lock-up, Arthur watches TV about ancient Greece. Ray goes to his parent's to see Marty, who is going crazy. Ray tells Marty there is a cardboard box downstairs that Arthur insists he practise crouching inside, for cover to get to the quiz. At the Winchester, Ray is unloading some books from a van. Dave pops outside to tell him and Arthur that Marty has run off. They discuss trying to get the quiz cancelled then Arthur goes to find a new fourth man for the team.

Marty walks to the police station, but see Morley and flees. In the Winchester, Ray mentions to Dave he can't understand why Arthur is going overboard about the quiz. Dave tells him Arthur didn't want to do the quiz, but then Walter showed up and started staying things about Ray and his dad and Arthur took offense. At the lock-up, Marty returns and tells Arthur he can't cope and wants to go back to prison but he saw Morley and he panicked. Ray says Marty can't compete in the quiz in his state and they have to turn Marty in. Arthur agrees.

On quiz night Arthur unsuccessfully attempts to bribe the Quiz Master. At the police station Field tells Morley that Ray persuaded Marty to give himself up, but Morley missed it. Ray says he needs to leave but Morley insists he stay and give a full statement.

The time for the quiz is approaching. Dave and Arthur walk to the Winchester. A small crowd of people are entering and taking their seats. Morley keeps Ray at the police station, knowing he is missing the quiz. Arthur tries to delay the quiz, claiming his contact lens has fallen out. Field offers to give Ray a lift and mentions he used to do quizzes in the past. Ray asks him to be on the team. Arthur's stalling tactics annoys the other team to the point Walter tries to attack him. The quiz Master has to calm them down.

Ray and Field finally arrive.

The Winning Post leads the Winchester 60-58. Ray levels the scores. The final question is a piece of music which Arthur recognises but can't think of the name. Ray tells him to remember proposing to his wife and Arthur correctly guesses Serenade. The Winchester win. Arthur and Walter have words, then Arthur and Ray cheer as they walk home.

Arthur attends the funeral of Charlie Johnson, a notorious criminal. Arthur is honoured to be invited. D. S. Morley and D. C. Park are observing in an unmarked van. From an office nearby a second set of law enforcement are also monitoring the funeral. They identify Arthur, and another man he is talking to, as a persons of interest. The man doesn't want Arthur to mention his name in public, but he and Arthur are old friends. Arthur and Ray offer condolences to Charlie Johnson's widow. She invites them back to her house for food and drink. The guests are tailed by undercover police.

Mrs Johnson's house is full of people. Arthur meets up with the man from the funeral, Tommy Hambury. Ray leaves them to catch up and he meets, Joanna, a friend of the Mrs Johnson's.

Arthur and Tommy are drunk. Arthur send Ray home. Ray and Joanna leave together. Tommy tells Arthur he has a business proposition for him, the biggest operation he has ever planned. Arthur says Tommy is speaking to the right man.

In the morning, Arthur is suffering from a hangover and says he spent the night in Mrs Johnson's guest bedroom but can't recall what happened after Ray left.

A delivery truck arrives at Arthur's lock-up with a large variety of equipment, including radios and computers, from Tommy.

Two police officers observing the funeral, Superintendent Copeland and D. S. Cody, come to see Morley and Park, who they spotted also watching the funeral. They tell them of their interest in two men who attended, Tommy Hambury, a first class criminal who has undergone plastic surgery, and a second man, Arthur Daley. Morley bursts into laughter and dismisses Arthur. Copeland says there is no mistake. Tommy and Arthur know each other very well and they had an interesting conversation at the wake. A third officer enters, Joanna, an undercover agent. They play Morley and Park a tape recording of them talking at the wake.

Dave informs Arthur about Tommy's criminal history and tells Arthur it isn't safe to talk about Tommy in public. Ray phones Arthur to tell him about another delivery. Arthur arrives at the lock-up. The delivery includes ladders, rope and electrical cables. Morley and Park take photos from across the street. Ray wants to know what Arthur has gotten them into. He can't remember so Ray gets him drunk to try to jog his memory, but to no avail.

Mrs Johnson invites Arthur and Ray to her home. Joanna arrives. Ray goes to greet her, unaware she is police. Mrs Johnson flirts with Arthur. Joanna gently probes Ray as to the reason he and Arthur are visiting Mrs Johnson. Park photographs Arthur leaving Mrs Johnson's as she kisses him goodbye.

At a police debriefing Joanna reports that Arthur is anxious to contact Tommy and is possibly courting Mrs Johnson, who is infatuated with Arthur. Morley can't believe it. Cody states Arthur is planning to take over Charlie Johnson's empire. Morley and Park reports on the latest delivery to Arthur's lock-up. Copeland places the lock-up under 24 hour surveillance and tells Joanna to make Ray her priority. Morley looks at a picture of the man with grey hair who he assumes is Tommy. Copeland tells them it isn't and shows Morley and Park a picture of Tommy. Copeland tells them the other man is Chief Superintendent Paul Slater who arrested Charlie Johnson years ago and attended the funeral for sentimental reasons.

At the Winchester, Ray tells Dave that Arthur is seeing a specialist about his memory. Ray asks Dave for help finding Tommy. Arthur is observed by Morley entering a doctor's office. Arthur tells the doctor he needs to remember what he did when he was drunk.

Joanna comes to see Ray at the lock-up. He is on the phone asking about Tommy. There is a knock at the door and Joanna goes to answer. Ray goes outside and there has been another delivery of some machines. Joanna talks Ray into letting her come with him. He tells her when they get there she has to wait in the car.

Later, Park follows Ray, who goes into a pub asking for Tommy. The locals act funny and the landlord says he can't help him. A man approaches, telling Ray he knows someone who can put Ray in touch with Tommy. Soon after, Ray has been attacked and stumbles and collapses on the street. Park and Joanna run to him. Joanna calmly tells Park to search Ray for keys to the lock-up to get copies cut, then Park should disappear and she'll take him to the hospital.

Later, Ray leaves the hospital, looking battered and bruised. Arthur tells him off for looking for Tommy.

Back at the lock-up, vehicles have been delivered. Copeland, Morley and Park are across the street waiting for Arthur and Ray to leave so they can enter the lock-up and check what is there.

Arthur visits another specialist about his memory. It doesn't go well.

Park and Cody are in the lock-up. Park checks Arthur's voice messages. There is one from Mrs Johnson and one from Tommy, telling him to keep the 15th free.

At the lock up, Ray tells Arthur there has been another delivery: a dozen police uniforms. At the Winchester, Mrs Johnson comes to see Arthur. She is very affectionate. She orders champagne. She asks Arthur to move in with her. He tells her he is already married and she is surprised. Arthur manages to talk his way out of it be telling Mrs Johnson he respects her too much. As she leaves she whispers that she will remember the night of Charlie's wake for the rest of her life. Tommy phones Arthur, arranging a meeting at Southend pier at midnight.

The police are informed Arthur received a call then he and Ray left. Copeland thinks Arthur will be meeting Tommy tonight.

Ray and Arthur drive to the meeting. Ray notices he is being tailed, by Joanna, but manages to lose her. They arrive at the pier. Arthur tells Ray to wait by the car. Arthur makes his way to the pier. Tommy is waiting. Ray finds a different way to approach them. Arthur confesses to Tommy that he can't remember the details of their plan. Tommy reveals Arthur was to drunk so they didn't discuss any details. He just wanted an agreement in principal. Tommy tells him this is going to be the biggest job ever pulled anywhere in the world. They will be living legends. Just as Tommy is about to reveal his plans he loses his footing and falls over the side of the pier into the sea. He doesn't resurface.

At Tommy's funeral, Arthur is trying to sell the stock Tommy sent him. Ray tells Arthur Mrs Johnson has invited them back to her house after the service. Arthur looks over to her and she smiles.

Whatever Happened to Her Indoors (Sep 19, 1991)
12 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Series 8 Episode 3

At the car lot, Arthur has a new flagpole. He and Ray raise a Union Flag with "British is Best" written across it. Soon after, Arthur receives a visit from John Richards, a Planning Enforcement Officer from the local council, telling him to take it down, as you can't fly the Union Flag with "British is Best" written on it. Arthur refuses.

A woman knocks on a front door inside an apartment block. There is no answer. She knocks on the neighbour's door, an elderly man answers.

Arthur has a meeting with Mr Shanks about his overdraft facility, wanting to increase it by £20,000, but is told he is already £5,000 over the current agreed overdraft limit. His application is rejected.

Arthur returns to the lock-up. The lights are off and Ray is waiting in the dark to tell Arthur the electricity has been turned off due to unpaid bills. Arthur blames Ray, who yells at Arthur in return.

D. C. Park takes a phone call from the elderly neighbour regarding a possible missing person. Park informs D. S. Morley about the phone call. They assume it is a crank, but Morley wants to investigate. A woman comes to see Morley and Park, the same woman who knocked on the flat door and got no answer. She is a hairdresser and reports one of her regular clients is missing.

At the Winchester, Arthur tells Dave he is going to court over his flagpole. A reporter is in the Winchester and overhears. He tells Arthur he'd like to interview him. The reporter has some pictures of Arthur and Ray posing with the flag taken for the newspaper. Park arrives to inform Arthur his wife may have had her credit cards stolen but they can't get in touch with her. Arthur tells Park she is staying with her sister in Norfolk.

At the lock up, Arthur is with a colleague, Billy from Bradford, when Park arrives to take Arthur to the police station. At the station Morley informs Arthur his wife isn't in Norfolk and isn't expected. He also informs Arthur a member of the public thinks something has happened to her and he wonders why Arthur seems so unconcerned. Arthur says his wife is fine and wants Morley to stop looking for her. Morley asks Arthur to check her clothes to see if anything is missing. Park doesn't believe Arthur has done anything but Morley isn't so convinced.

Arthur's article appears in the newspaper. Ray tells him he has been summoned to court. Arthur and Ray go see a solicitor, George Drummond, and there is a miscommunication. Arthur thinks they are discussing his flagpole. George thinks they are discussing Arthur's missing wife. Ray shows George the article and the summons. George says Arthur is obviously guilty based on the article. He will be fined and ordered to take the flag down.

Park tells Morley about Arthur's money problems, which further intrigues Morley. They go to speak with Dave about Arthur, then interview Ray's parents, Bert and Doreen and talk to Mr Shanks, who tells them about Arthur's flagpole and his desire to raise more money. Morley then speaks with Arthur's wife's hairdresser.

In court, Arthur defends himself and calls Ray as a witness. On the stand, Ray accuses Richards of possibly being drunk the day he spoke with Arthur about the flagpole. Later, Ray tells Arthur he mentioned suspecting Richards of being drunk as he heard the magistrate is teetotal. In court, the magistrate says she wants the suspected drinking of alcohol in the council investigated and tells Arthur he is free to go, but if he raises the flag again he may end up being fined.

Morley and Park walk around Arthur's car lot. Morley looks at the base of Arthur's new flagpole.

Leaving court, Arthur agrees to do a new interview for the newspaper. Arthur and Ray arrive at the car lot in time to see the flagpole being torn down, supervised by Morley, who tells Arthur he wants to establish if his wife is buried beneath it.

Ray asks Arthur where his wife is. Arthur says he wishes he knew, then worries the police will want to search the lock-up. Arthur tells Ray they must move some of the stock. Park arrives to take Arthur to the police station.

At the police station, Morley states Arthur failed to report his wife missing. Arthur protests that he didn't know she was, then he demands Morley put his flagpole back up. Morley states Arthur seems more concerned with his flagpole that his missing wife. Arthur repeats he doesn't know where she is. Morley and Park tell Arthur they know he is having money trouble and his solicitor, George, told them that some years ago he took an insurance policy out on his wife. Arthur doesn't remember. If she dies, Arthur gets a lot of money. Morley tells Arthur they are going to search his home. Arthur gives him a spare key. Morley wants Arthur to make a full statement about his wife.

Ray stores some of the stock in the Winchester and at his parents. After being released, Arthur goes to the lock-up, which is completely empty. He arrives home. The police are present. His neighbour, who tipped off the police, tells Arthur to confess. Arthur arrives at the Winchester and tells Ray he needs to stay with him as the police have taken over his home. The phone rings and Dave says it will be Arthur's wife, who has been repeatedly calling, looking for him. Arthur doesn't want to answer but Ray and Dave force him to. Dave tells Ray she sounded annoyed, and knows people are wondering where she is. After speaking on the phone Arthur is agitated. His wife went to a health farm on the spur of the moment. She had left him a letter for her hairdresser and a cheque to pay for his electricity, all of which he lost.

At the police station an angry Morley yells at Arthur after the revelation his wife is perfectly fine. He tells Arthur his flagpole has been re-erected.

At the car lot, Arthur switches the floodlights on, revealing the flagpole has been stolen.

Series 8 Episode 2

Arthur attends a wine tasting at Herbie Collins, who convinces Arthur to invest in some of his wine. Arthur buys 150 cases. Ray is doing some modelling for his friend Gloria, a photographer.

Later, Arthur and Ray pay Herbie for the wine. Arthur asks for a sample case. Herbie invites Arthur to wait in his office while he gets some. When Arthur and Ray are out of sight, Herbie selects a case of wine with a different label.

Gloria stops Ray outside the Winchester and offers him a modelling job for the morning. He says he needs to be done by 12 noon, then he and Gloria go for some chips. Sitting in the car eating, Gloria questions Ray about working for Arthur, saying she doesn't want to see him waste his potential. He tries to kiss her but she declines.

At the lock-up in the morning, Arthur is in pain with a broken tooth. Ray drags him to the dentist. During his treatment the dentist gives him a general anaesthetic, leaving Arthur high and talking funny. They go to Herbie's for a wine tasting. Arthur interacts with the potential clients, including Mr Parnham, who refers to Arthur as the "drunken man with the speech impediment." Afterwards, Arthur has fallen asleep and Herbie yells at Ray, saying Arthur has ruined their chances of selling the wine.

Later in the Winchester, Arthur phones Herbie to explain situation and arrange another wine tasting.

Ray is with Gloria. He missed their modelling assignment due to taking Arthur to the dentist. Gloria says it was important as the boss was giving her a try out. He is giving her a second chance with a night shoot at the weekend. Double pay but she doubts she can trust Ray. He asks for another chance. She relents and he kisses her and asks her out but she brushes it off.

Arthur informs Ray and Dave he has arranged a wine tasting at the Winchester, so Dave needs to invite his landlord friends. He also tells Ray they are going to take the wine around various retailers to try to sell it.

Dave arrives at Herbie's warehouse just as Herbie is being arrested by D. S. Morley and D. C. Park. They question Dave about why he is there. Dave tells them he wanted to buy some bottles of wine. Morley tells Dave to forget it as the warehouse is sealed up until the police make a complete inventory.

Arthur and Ray arrive at a shop owned by Artemis and Theo. Arthur talks Artemis into buying some wine.

At the Winchester Dave tells Arthur and Ray about the situation with Herbie. Arthur says it's a nightmare as he sold Artemis 25 cases of wine and can't get to them.

Arthur and Ray return to Artemis to explain and he seemingly takes the news well. As they leave they find Arthur's car blocked in, unable to move outside the shop. Artemis says they can collect the car when they deliver the wine.

Arthur and Ray break into Herbie's warehouse to "reposes" Arthur's wine. Ray loads the wine cases into the van. They head down in the lift with the final few cases when the lift suddenly stops. Arthur bangs the control panel and the lift starts again.

At the Winchester, Parnham arrives for the wine tasting. As Ray and Dave are opening bottles of wine they notice the corks are too small. Arthur asks Parnham to have the first tasting of the wine. Parnham immediately spits it out and tells Arthur he has a contaminated batch, from air exposure.

Later. When the Winchester is empty, Ray shows Arthur and Dave that the good sample case is from 1990. The rest of the cases are from 1991. Ray says it's a pity they took the wine out of the warehouse because if it was still inside Arthur would have legal rights for compensation. Arthur and Ray set out to put the wine back into the warehouse. Ray notices he is late for his modelling shoot with Gloria.

Gloria is on location with the other models, anxiously waiting for Ray.

In Herbie's warehouse, Arthur and Ray take the lift down to leave. The lift stops as it has before. They try banging the control panel to restart it, but it fails. The lift gates won't open. Arthur uses a coin to get into the control panel. A wire is lose. He pushes it back in and the wire sparks. Ray stands on Arthur's back to climb onto the lift roof. He climbs up to the top of the warehouse, then runs down to the ground floor to the fuse box, which he can't repair. Ray breaks up a wooden pallet to use for a seat and ties a winch rope around it. Arthur is reluctant to move. Ray tells him he can either winch him up or he can wait for the police to find him on Monday morning. He pulls Arthur onto the roof of the lift, then lowers the winch down for Arthur to sit on.

Gloria phones Dave at the Winchester, telling him Ray should have been there hours ago. Dave leaves the Winchester and gets a taxi to Herbie's warehouse.

Ray climbs back to the top of the warehouse. Arthur sits on the winch seat. Dave sees Arthur's van parked outside Herbie's warehouse. He is spotted by two passing policemen and tells them he parked up to rest for a while. As the policemen watch, Dave gets into Arthur's van and as he turns the key the motor from the winch inside the warehouse fires up. Arthur begins to be lifted up, but the motor runs out of petrol. Ray says there is a spare can in the van. When he looks outside he sees the van being reluctantly driven away by Dave, and Ray assumes it has been stolen. Arthur is left stuck sitting on the winch halfway up the warehouse.

Gloria finally runs out of patience and calls off her photo shoot.

At the police station, Park informs Morley that two uniform officers caught Dave outside Herbie's warehouse and when they ran the van number plate it is owned by Arthur. Morley and Park head to the warehouse.

In the morning Ray goes to get help but sees Morley and Park speed up to the warehouse. Ray has to hide. Morley and Park enter and hear Arthur call out to Ray. They look down the lift shaft and see Arthur swinging halfway down on the winch seat. Morley and Park laugh and tell him he is under arrest.

Arthur is raised up by several police officers. Morley asks Park what Arthur has stolen from the warehouse. Park says nothing and there are an extra 149 cases of wine present. Morley knows they can't charge Arthur with anything. Morley demands they leave, then asks Ray what Herbie sold Arthur. Ray says wine and Morley says it isn't on the list. Ray tells Morley he is sitting on the boxes, but Morley insists that's impossible, unless someone broke in and put the wine there. Arthur stops Ray from saying anything else and they leave.

Arthur tells Ray they are cutting their loses and to forget the wine. Ray surmises Arthur must have lost £1,500 on the wine, plus Artemis and Theo still have his Jaguar, whilst Ray has lost £300 for the modelling job. Arthur suggests he be Ray's manager.

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Entrepreneur (Sep 5, 1991)

Warning: Spoilers
Series 8 Episode 1

Arthur is attending a family wedding and using a cloakroom as a temporary office. Another guest at the wedding, Wilf, speaks with Arthur about being blackmailed for protection money. Arthur says he will send Terry round to deal with the problem.

Arthur's brother, Bert, and his wife Doreen, are dancing at the wedding. Doreen tells Bert he needs to talk to Arthur about their son, Ray. Bert asks Arthur about giving Ray a job. Not as a Minder like Terry, as Ray is "executive material". Ray is brought in to see Arthur and tells Arthur he doesn't want to end up stealing like his friends. He wants to be like Arthur. Arthur turns him down, then gets a phone call and asks for Ray to come back. Arthur tells Ray he needs someone to do some odd jobs for him in the morning.

Arthur goes to Terry's house, but it is empty, with the bedding stripped down, no clothes in the wardrobe and the keys left behind. Arthur heads to the lock-up. Ray is in the office with a woman, who informs Arthur she is Terry's mother-in-law and Terry has left Arthur's employment to go into business with Johnny Bradbury. At the Winchester Arthur complains to Dave that Terry has gotten married and set up business with Johnny Bradbury. Dave was already aware and reluctantly tells Arthur where Terry is staying. Arthur goes looking for Terry but gets no response at the door. Terry's mother-in-law arrives and tells Arthur that Terry has emigrated to Australia. At the car lot Ray informs Arthur that business has been good, with many customers coming by to collect items from Arthur, including cars and video recorders. Arthur tells Ray he has been conned because Terry has left and Arthur has no protection.

At the police station Arthur tells D. S. Morley and D. C. Park he has been robbed but they laugh. They note Arthur is vulnerable without Terry. Morley gets a phone call regarding Ray, who has been arrested for not having a drivers license. Arthur also notes Ray has once again been duped by a customer, paying with a fake cheque.

At the Winchester, Dave tells Arthur he is being threatened for protection money. Arthur says he'll take care of it. Arthur purchases a fake drivers license for Ray and gets him out of the police station. Arthur sends Ray to Brussels to collect a car he has bought.

Morley and Park arrive at Arthur's car lot and Morley is interested in buying a Golf. Arthur is reluctant to do business with the police but the offer of a cash purchase tempts Arthur. He tells Morley he can get him a new car from Brussels in 48 hours. Ray arrives at the car dealers. He eavesdrops on Pierre speaking French on the phone, then takes delivery of a white Golf. On the ferry home Arthur still doubts Ray and says he needs a new Minder.

Three men arrive at the Winchester threatening Dave. Ray and Arthur park the Golf outside the Winchester. Ray is reluctant to leave the Golf unattended but Arthur tells him it is alarmed. The three men smash up furniture and the customers leave. Arthur and Ray enter. Arthur bluffs, saying Terry is on the way but they know he is gone. Ray easily beats up two of the men and Arthur threatens the third to never take liberties with him again and to return the cars and video recorders they took or Arthur will send Ray, his new Minder, around to collect.

Word has spread that Arthur has a new Minder. He sets Ray up in a new flat. Morley and Park meet Arthur at his car lot to collect Morley's new Golf. Arthur asks him to wait for Anton to arrive from Brussels to do a road test. Morley doesn't want to wait. Later, Arthur and Pierre are arguing about Arthur selling the car before Anton could road test it. Pierre tells him it is illegal and he will not sell Arthur any more cars if he doesn't return Morley's Golf so it can be road tested. Arthur explains the situation to Morley but he doesn't trust Arthur. Morley says a road test regulation is fake and the car is in perfect working order.

Next day at Ray's flat, Arthur tells Ray the situation. Ray asks Arthur if he is involved in Pierre's car smuggling scheme. Arthur says no. Ray tells Arthur he heard Pierre on the phone telling someone they would follow the usual procedure, send Anton over and whatever was in the car was worth £100,000. Ray guesses it is cannabis. Arthur deduces the road test is an excuse for Anton to remove whatever is in the car. Ray says he searched the car but found nothing. Arthur realises Morley is driving the car with drugs hidden in it somewhere.

Ray steals the car from outside Morley's house. At the lock-up they strip it down but find nothing inside. Morley sees his car is missing. He and Park spot it being driven while on patrol and Morley recklessly chases after it. Ray is driving the Golf. Arthur is following behind in his Jaguar. He notices Morley driving after the Golf and blocks him from driving past. Morley stops and angrily yells at Arthur, who acts dumb. Morley and Park drive to Morley's house where the Golf is parked outside waiting. Morley is baffled. Arthur drives up, claiming to be passing. Ray sneaks in the back of Arthur's car and they drive off.

At the lock-up Arthur and Ray meet with Pierre and Anton. Pierre tells Arthur to bring them the car. As they talk Pierre says it's "in the bag" which catches Ray's attention. Once they leave Ray mentions Pierre's comment about "in the bag" and says Pierre said it on the phone and meant "in the boot". They surmise the drugs are in the spare wheel. Arthur says they need to switch Morley's spare wheel with another, but Ray is caught in the act. In the Police station Morley cuts into the spare wheel and pulls out the cannabis.

He tells Arthur and Ray they are going to jail. Arthur points out that Morley is the legal owner of the car and all it's contents. Morley protests. Arthur says someone obviously sold the drugs to Arthur, then Arthur unknowingly sold them to Morley. Morley quickly works out the road test was fake to retrieve the drugs.

Pierre collects the Golf from Arthur's car lot, again saying it's "in the bag." Morley is hiding in Arthur's office. At the Winchester, Morley stops by to tell Arthur how appreciative he is and wants to buy Arthur a drink. Arthur declines, stating he has to think of his reputation. Morley storms off.

The Cruel Canal (Dec 25, 1991)

Warning: Spoilers
Series 8 Episode 13

Arthur buys a consignment of video recorders from an associate, Derek. While delivering some videos to Limehouse Ray's van breaks down, making him late for the delivery. The buyer, Tony Anthony (Two-Tone), phones Arthur, enquiring about Ray and gives him 20 minutes to make delivery or the deal is off. Ray's van is towed back to the lock-up. Two-Tone cancels the deal and Arthur blames Ray, tells him to bring all the videos into the lock-up and he will have to spend the night there watching them. Gloria visits Ray at the lock-up. She worries Ray will end up like Arthur.

In the morning Arthur stores the videos at the Winchester, much to Dave's annoyance. A policeman spots his van outside the Winchester and notes the tax disc is out of date. Ray goes to buy a new tax disc.

Arthur tells Dave they need to get the videos to Limehouse as Two-Tone had agreed to buy them, for half price. While Arthur waits, Big Dai, a small Welshman, arrives. Big Dai tells Arthur he has been robbed of some videos, asks Arthur to listen out for any information and promises revenge. Arthur frantically tells Dave the video recorders he bought from Derek were stolen from Big Dai. When Ray returns Arthur is panicking. He tells Ray and Dave that to get the video's to Limehouse and avoid Big Dai they will hire a barge from a man he knows, load it with the videos and use the canals to move across London to make the delivery. Ray and Dave are sceptical.

Arthur hires a barge for £150 per day. Ray and Arthur bicker over the condition of the barge. Big Dai interrogates Derek over who has his video recorders. Derek mentions both Arthur and Two-Tone to Big Dai. Arthur, Ray and Dave cram the barge with 200 video recorders. Arthur and Ray start their journey along the canal. Soon, Arthur is feeling sea sick and complains about the slow pace they are moving. Big Dai goes to see Two-Tone, who is initially dismissive of Big Dai, telling him he is "a long way from home" and asks one of his men to throw Big Dai out, but Big Dai knocks the man unconscious.

Two-Tone is now only too happy to help Big Dai, if he hears anything. He tells an employee that Big Dai is "a gentleman. Welsh. Paranoid. Possibly psychotic. But a gentleman." Ray and Arthur stop the barge in the darkness as they can't see anything. So Arthur and Ray can sleep downstairs, Ray moves the video recorders to the top of the barge and ties them down. Then Ray sets out to try to find somewhere to buy food and drink.

Arthur is left alone in the dark on the barge. He is spooked by any noise, but Ray finally returns with supplies. Arthur complains about what he bought. Arthur and Ray play monopoly and Ray notes Arthur has been cheating. They argue. Later they have trouble sleeping, with Arthur complaining of the cold and a passing boat. They hear rats and Arthur reacts, sending an annoyed Ray to scare them off. Ray drops a shoe in the canal then returns to finds Arthur asleep.

In the morning Arthur calls Two-Tone and tells him they will be there just after lunch. Ray buys supplies for breakfast. While Dave is on the phone with Arthur's wife, who is wondering where he is, Big Dai arrives at the Winchester, looking for Arthur. Arthur nearly falls into the water stepping onto the barge. Dave looks for Arthur and is blackmailed into hiring a speedboat to catch up with him quicker.

Arthur and Ray continue to argue. They don't notice an upcoming bridge, with the video recorders piled up on the back of the barge, they crash into the underneath of the bridge and trap the barge. Passers by on the bridge above watch Arthur and Ray blame each other and argue. Dave speeds along the canal, spotted by a policeman. Arthur and Ray try to dislodge the barge from the bridge. Big Dai goes to see Two-Tone, who says he has something that may be his. Arthur and Ray have finally freed their barge and move along the canal, then Arthur spots Two-Tone and Big Dai walking to a van in a car park nearby.

Arthur, who is steering the barge, tries to shield his face from them. Two-Tone passes Big Dai a box.

Big Dai looks inside and identifies the items as his that were stolen. Before Big Dai pays he wants the name of the thief. Two-Tone tells him Frenchie Flynn. Big Dai's items turn out to be video tapes, not video recorders, featuring 20 Great Welsh Boxers. Ray tells Arthur to turn off the barge engine.

Arthur loses control of the barge and it crashes onto land, sending the video recorders into the water.

Two-Tone and Big Dai hear the noise and run over. Ray tells Big Dai it wasn't Arthur who stole his videos. Big Dai agrees, telling them Two-Tone got his video tapes back, that include Big Dai from his boxing days. Big Dai leaves to go see Frenchie Flynn. Two-Tone cancels his deal with Arthur for the video recorders.

Arthur and Ray slowly make their way home on the barge. Arthur wonders if the things Ray said to him during their argument were actually complaints from Arthur's wife.

The Coach That Came in from the Cold (Nov 21, 1991)

Series 8 Episode 12

Arthur is trying to gain membership to a private golf club, as he sees the members as good business contacts. He tries to gain favour with the new club captain, the pompous Simon Perkins. While there he bumps into an old acquaintance, Previous, recently released from prison, who is caddying at the club. In the meantime, local gangster Denny Willis is looking for Arthur at his car lot. With no sign of Arthur, Willis has one of his men smash some windscreens as a calling card.

At the golf club Perkins meets with Major Beatty, the clubs senior member. The club committee push Beatty out of his position to make room for someone younger. Superintendent Roden tells D. S. Morley the accountants will be coming to look at their books and they need to show a loss in revenue so their budget isn't reduced the following year. Roden tells Morley to fetch Arthur Daley. Ray meets Lorraine, the clubs catering manageress and they flirt. Morley finds Arthur at the club and asks him if he wants to buy a police transport coach. Ray asks Lorraine out but Arthur interrupts and claims Ray is married.

Lorraine leaves.

Arthur and Ray view the police coach. Arthur plans to turn it into a 'Daley Tours' bus. Arthur tells Ray he has hired Previous, to create some 'teach yourself English' tapes to sell. Arthur agrees to buy the coach.

At his lock-up Denny Willis catches up with Arthur. He locks him in a storage cage. Apparently, Arthur had previously sold six facsimile four wheel drive kits to someone who, in turn, sold them to Denny and they broke. Denny tells Arthur he owes him £20,000 and wants his money by the afternoon. Previous and Ray arrive and Ray lets Arthur out of the cage. Denny and Ray talk and Denny leaves.

Arthur and Ray take the tour bus to the airport and load up with incoming tourists. The tourists are unimpressed with the tour and demand Arthur commentate as they drive. The bus breaks down. While Ray tries to fix the problem Arthur has all the tourists get off the bus and makes up stories about a statue nearby. Arthur cajoles the tourists into pushing the tour bus, which starts. Arthur takes them to the Winchester. Denny arrives with some men wanting his money from Arthur. One of Denny's men grabs Arthur, who tells the tourists it is part of the tour. Ray fights off Denny's men to the delight of the tourists. Denny is impressed, but tells Arthur he owes him, and leaves. Ray gets a call from Lorraine inviting him to the golf club. Outside, Denny approaches Ray and offers him employment. Ray dismisses it.

At the golf club Lorraine tells Ray that Previous told her the truth about Ray. She is happy he is single and needs his help. She has discovered Perkins is planning something for the club and she wants to check it out. Ray agrees to help after Perkins smugly interrupts them and tells Ray to stay away from the club. Superintendent Roden tells Morley the C. I. D. Boss handed in an expenses claim for vehicle maintenance, meaning someone told him the accountants were coming. Morley admits it was him after they were seen selling the coach to Arthur.

Roden tells Morley the claim is for too much money and they must buy the bus back from Arthur before anyone finds out they sold a police coach for next to nothing. And if he gets in trouble so will Morley.

Ray tells Arthur about Perkins' plan to take control of the golf club and sell the land to his own development company so he can build executive style homes. Arthur says he can't get involved. Morley arrives wanting to buy the bus back. Arthur has already sold it to Rambo. Morley wants Arthur to buy it back, so he can then buy it back from Arthur. Morley threatens Arthur, who relents. Arthur goes to Rambo and talks him into giving him the bus back for a refund. Ray, Lorraine and Major Beatty confront Perkins at the club about his planning application for Perkins company to develop the golf course.

Arthur and Ray return the bus to the police. An accountant pushes Morley as to why he needed the bus but Arthur steps in to spare Morley from trouble.

At the gold club Arthur joins Ray, Lorraine and Major Beatty for a drink. Arthur tries to take some credit for helping save the club. Previous shows up and plays Arthur some of his tape recordings.

Arthur chases him outside the club. Denny and his men are waiting. Arthur says he doesn't have the money but Denny says Rambo told him Arthur made money from the bus sale. Lorraine tells Ray Arthur runs his life. He denies it but hears Arthur calling for him and runs over. Ray jumps to Arthur's rescue, but it is seven against one. Ray doesn't back down. Denny respects Ray's loyalty. Denny tells Arthur to pay him £1,000 and he will call it quits.

Major Beatty tells Arthur he'd be happy to finalise Arthur's membership but he needs to play a round of golf first. Arthur scoffs at the idea. Ray asks Lorraine out again, and even though she wants to, says Ray's devotion to Arthur is not good for him. She tells him he saved the golf club and leaves.

Having both not got what they wanted, Arthur and Ray go for a drink.

Lewis Nelson enters a casino looking for his wife, Lorna. While there, he has to pay off a large debt she has amassed from gambling. Arthur arrives at his car lot and is informed the VAT man has been looking for him. Arthur sends Eric, an employee, off with a list of collections to make. Arthur meets up with Lewis Nelson, who is an old friend. Lewis wants to hire Ray to keep Lorna, his much younger and very attractive wife, away from the casino.

Eric is collecting black bags filled with used playing cards. He meets Joe, who works in a casino.

Joe fills a black bag with used cards and leaves it outside in the back alley for Eric to collect.

Later, a different man arrives in the alley looking for something near the bin, can't find it, and is scared off by an alarm sounding. A casino employee, Roger, phones his boss and tells him the safe has been broken into. Eric returns to Arthur's lock-up with the black bags. Arthur tells him to put the bags in boot of his car. Ray and Lorna have gone to Lewis's country house, away from the casino.

At the Winchester, Dave tells Arthur the VAT man is looking for him. Arthur flees to the country. Lorna tries talking Ray into going to town. He refuses. She tries to sneak out but Ray stops her. Arthur arrives, uninvited. Joe leaves the casino and is followed. Lorna, Arthur and Ray play roulette. Arthur demonstrates some talent. Lorna asks Arthur to go to the casino to play for her. They will use her money and she will stay home with Ray, not breaking her promise to Lewis. She offers a 50/50 split on any winnings. Arthur tells Ray he has brought the black bags filled with playing cards. He wants Ray to organise them into packs as he has a buyer for them. Lorna gives Arthur £500 and a system she uses to gamble. Joe is interrogated by a man about being seen at the back of the casino. He admits to slipping bags of used playing cards to someone who works for Arthur, who sells them on. The man reports this to two men, Roger and Lewis Nelson, but doesn't mention Arthur by name. Lewis tells the man to find him.

Arthur is at the casino gambling, but soon loses Lorna's system. At the house, Ray and Lorna play cards. She tells Ray that Lewis taught he to play poker but then he fell out with his partner at the casino so he no longer allows her to gamble there, but the owner gives her unlimited credit knowing Lewis will pay the debt. Arthur returns having made a profit. Lewis is informed the man buying the cards from the casino is Arthur. Lorna and Arthur plot another night of gambling. Ray opens another of Arthur's black bags and it contains £98,000 from the casino, which Eric must have collected by mistake. Lorna wants to return it but Arthur says people will wonder how they got it. Lewis goes to the Winchester looking for Arthur, telling Dave that Arthur has a bag that belongs to him and he wants it back. Dave says he will pass on the message.

At the lock-up, Eric hits the VAT man over the head with a potted plant. Dave phones Ray and tells him about Lewis Nelson looking for Arthur and his bag. The money is gone. Ray deduces Arthur took it with him. At the casino, Arthur is having bad luck. His behaviour catches Roger's attention. They ID Arthur and he calls Lewis. Ray and Lorna arrive at the casino and Ray tells Arthur the money belongs to Lewis Nelson, who stole it to get back all the money Lorna had lost at the casino, and knows Arthur has it.

Arthur admits to losing all the money gambling. As they leave they see Lorna gambling. Lewis arrives demanding the money. Arthur pretends he gave the money back to save Lewis from future trouble with the police and tells him Lorna is inside waiting for him. Lewis runs to Lorna as Arthur and Ray leave. Ray tells Arthur that Eric has hit the VAT man with a potted plant.

He bumps into Vinny Meadows as he leaves Arnie's pub. Then Billy Meadows arrives to meet his estranged brother. When Arthur exits the pub Morley and Park, on stakeout, see him. Billy tells Vinny he is looking for someone in London and shows him a picture of Henri. Later, an informant of Vinny's tells Billy that Henri is working for Arthur.

In the Winchester Morley and Park question Arthur, assuming he has knowledge of the Meadows brothers meeting. Arthur claims innocence. Billy arrives at the Daley Catering office just after Henri has left. Henri and Mandy, another employee of Arthur's, whom Henri is dating, set up for the evenings function and Henri tells Mandy he wants to take her to France to meet his family.

Henri returns to the Daley Catering office and sees the door ajar. Inside, Billy is waiting for him.

Once outside, Henri manages to escape. Billy demands his men bring Arthur to him. One of Vinny's men was watching Henri's escape from a car. He reports to Vinny, who tells his men he wants Henri found first. Arthur and Ray arrive at Arnie's pub to find Mandy sitting alone in the function room with no food and Henri missing. Billy's attempts to find Arthur have failed. Arthur is unaware they are looking for him. Morley sees Arthur at the function and is baffled why Arthur was hired to cater. Vinny interrupts Billy and Arthur and tells Billy he has Henri and smugly tells Vinny that if he says 'please' then he can have Henri. Billy angrily tells Vinny that Henri got his daughter pregnant and says 'please.' Vinny tells him that Henri is in a car downstairs, raising a slight smile from Billy's daughter. Billy and his daughter get into the car with a defeated Henri and drive away. Ray arrives as they leave.

At the Winchester, Arthur tells Dave and Ray that Henri will have to marry Billy's daughter.

Morley and Park arrive to tell Arthur the chief superintendent has been rushed to the hospital with suspected food poisoning after the function. Mandy and Ray go off on a date.

Warning: Spoilers
Series 8 Episode 9

Whilst at the barbers, Arthur reminisces with friends about old entertainment acts, recalling a ventriloquist act, Tommy Pickford and Mystic Mickey. Ray is playing pool and drinking with a friend Barry, in his club. Barry offers Ray a business opportunity, supplying 'in pub entertainment', especially karaoke machines. Later Arthur asks Ray what he does for evening entertainment. Ray mentions he is going to a karaoke night. That evening Ray takes Gloria to the karaoke. Arthur arrives and is impressed at how busy it is. Next day Arthur tries to sell the idea of a karaoke night at the Winchester to Dave, who declines. Arthur asks a friend, Monty, to find Tommy Pickford.

Arthur sets up a karaoke night at the Rose and Crown pub run by Dermot. He rents karaoke equipment from Mrs Gabadini. Arthur and Monty go see Tommy Pickford and, though he's unsure, convince him to perform his act again at the karaoke night. Tommy is nervous before his performance, the crowd don't react and he is heckled but his humorous response wins the crowd over. Gloria tells Ray she has doubts about Barry, but Ray defends him and his self-made success.

Due to his success Arthur tells Tommy he has a regular gig. Ray's attempts to rent out entertainment machines don't go well. At Barry's club he and his employee, Trevor, notice they are light on customers. Tommy complains of feeling unwell after another performance and is taken home.

Arthur sees Mystic Mickey's box has been left behind. He takes it back to the lock-up and sits talking with Mystic Mickey, reflecting on getting older. Monty tells Arthur that Tommy can't perform every night so they (unsuccessfully) hold auditions for new acts.

Leaving the auditions, Arthur and Ray discover their van has been broken into and their karaoke machine has been stolen. Ray tells Arthur they are worth £10,000, money Arthur doesn't have. Dave then tells Arthur that Mrs Gabadini will be attending that evenings karaoke night. Ray goes to Barry to rent a karaoke machine. Barry refuses as his business has been affected by Arthur's competing karaoke nights. Ray promises that he will end Arthur's karaoke evenings if Barry will rent him a machine. Plus, Ray will owe Barry a favour. Barry agrees.

Mrs Gabadini attends the karaoke evening. She joins Arthur and Tommy for a drink and wonders where her karaoke machine is, noting Arthur used a different model. Arthur claims hers had a small fault. Mrs Gabadini insists Arthur bring it to her on Friday for repair, unless there is a reason he can't. Barry calls in his favour with Ray, transporting equipment to Luton with Trevor. Arthur worries where he will get £10,000 for a karaoke machine. As Ray and Trevor prepare to travel to Luton, Ray begins to suspect Barry and Trevor of the robbery. He confronts Barry, discovering Mrs Gabadini's karaoke machine in Barry's office. Ray plays it cool, telling Barry he wants them to sell the machine and split the profit. He even knows of a buyer.

Ray, Barry and Trevor are about to leave with the machine but Gloria arrives and confronts Ray about their relationship. Ray hasn't time to talk and Gloria storms off. Ray drives to Mrs Gabadini's.

Barry tries to sell her her own karaoke machine. Arthur steps out of her office and says her machine is returned as promised. Arthur and Ray leave. Barry and Trevor attempt to follow but Mrs Gabadini's sons stop them.

Arthur ends his karaoke evenings. Tommy says it is for the best, but is thankful for one last chance. In the barbers, Arthur reflects on the experience.

Warning: Spoilers
Series 8 Episode 8

Ray is delivering goods to 'Kowloon's Dry Goods Ltd' and is being yelled at by the owner, Mr Fong.

In a video rental store Arthur is trying to sell the owner, Imran, a new 'Daley Security System'.

Imran declines as he has Syd, a Rottweiler. In the Winchester later, Dave reminds Arthur it is his wife's birthday, which he has forgotten for the past 2 years. Arthur insists he has an evening planned, at the boxing. Ray tells Arthur customers won't pay for the security systems as they want them installed and tells him to hire an electrician. Arthur and Ray visit Ron, a former thief, working at a health food stand. Arthur offers him a job installing security systems based on his knowledge of breaking into them. Ron accepts.

At Arthur's lock-up Ron tells Arthur to update his own security system (wooden doors and a padlock).

Ron wires up one of Arthur's security systems, but it malfunctions. Ron proceeds to install an electric shutter door. Arthur gives Ron a list of client instillations for the next day. Ron asks for some money but Arthur makes excuses. Ron and Ray leave. Arthur prepares to leave, activates his new electric shutter door but it doesn't fully close, leaving a large gap to the floor. An alarm goes off.

Ray is on a night out with friends. Arthur phones around trying to get hold of him. He phones Dave at the Winchester, who says Ray isn't there. Arthur is stuck in the lock-up. At the local police station they discuss the low arrest quota. The top arresting officer is the ambitious P. C. Corman. In the lock-up the security system short circuits and the lights go out. Dave sends a cabbie to bring Arthur some vodka and tonic. Ray and friends are at an Indian restaurant.

Corman and his partner pass by Arthur's lock-up and spot Arthur's silhouette at the window, in the darkness. Corman enters and arrests Arthur. He finds Arthur's list of security system clients and boxing tickets, reminding Arthur he is missing his wife's birthday. Ray arrives at the Winchester and discovers Arthur is stranded.

At the police station D. S. Morley and D. C. Park interview Arthur, pretending not to know him, and hear there is currently a burglary at Kowloon's Dry Goods. Arthur is released. In the car he tells Ray about the robbery at Kowloon's. Ray surmises it is Ron, who has a list of places needing security and are therefore easy to burgle. Ray drops Arthur at the lock-up and goes looking for Ron, tracking him via the client list. At Kowloon's, Morley and Park discover a video recorder has been stolen.

Imran brings Syd to Arthur's lock-up for protection. At the police station Corman is embarrassed at having arrested Arthur on his own property. Syd spooks Arthur, who locks himself in his office.

Corman hears the name 'Kowloon's' over the police radio and recalls it from Arthur's list. Arthur slips an ashtray filled with vodka outside the office door for Syd to drink. Ray catches up with Ron stealing a car radio. Ron says they should leave. Ray demands he reinstalls it.

Syd is asleep. Arthur escapes his office. Ray and Ron are caught trespassing by Corman and his partner. Arthur sits in his car drinking. His car battery dies and a homeless man hassles him for some vodka.

Arthur arrives at the police station. Morley tells him Ray and Ron were caught red-handed with the video recorder from Kowloon's at the second location on Arthur's list. Arthur claims a misunderstanding, stating they were checking the compatibility of the video recorder with Arthur's security system, doing it at night as that is when criminals operate and Ray was present as his limited knowledge was vital to test the security. Ray and Ron are later released. Arthur berates Ron and tells him the lock-up shutter won't close. Ron fixes the shutter and it closes with Arthur inside. The shutter jams and won't reopen. Syd is awake and proceeds to chase a trapped Arthur around the lock-up.
