Snapshots
12 May 2005
Whislt there are many interesting conflicts to be pursued the movie tries to, briefly, add them all in ,and ends up by being a series of disjointed 30 second snaps with no depth. At the time it is portrayed homophobia was a global thing, not the result of Castro's Cuba alone, except that in other countries, while being illegal, homosexuals were not tortured. But there was not enough focus on this subject to hold my attention or garner one's sympathy. The huge political upheaval in Cuba whilst integral to movie is just glossed over with more 30 second scenes. The difficulty of writing freely in such an oppressive environment is not explored at all.He magically "just" meets a couple who waltz off to France with one of his manuscripts..The most significant friendship of his life, with a heterosexual man, OM, is glossed to a 30 second meeting on a rock by the sea,and the depth of this friendship is never realised nor explored either.Leaving it to seem superficial. The assisted suicide lacks any empathy whatsoever and is a throw away end of something that could have been emotionally draining. They need to go and look at old Ingamar Bergman movies !!!(eg Cries and Whispers) With a wealth of fascinating subject material to get their teeth into they deliver a scrappy, hop/skip/jump rambling of no consequence as it never stays on any subject long enough to raise empathy let alone connection to Bardem..who put in a flawless performance ..sadly.

The real life character deserved better than this mish mash collage. And i realised too that OM is not a very good actor either which would account for his lack of decent roles since Unfaithful( much over hyped in my opinion anyway)

Patrick Dempsy Shines
24 February 2005
I saw this superb series years ago and Patrick Dempsy left an indelible memory for an outstanding performance.i have never forgotten it and can recall virtually every scene in it.I wondered what had happened to this young actor whom I knew only from some teenage movie called(I think) The Wa Wa Kid. Then he was a bit parter in a really angst ridden TV series called Once and Again in which he alone stood out as a psychologically disturbed chap.I could not remember his surname to see what he is up to so tracked him through this series..and just HAD to drop a note to say what a cool actor he is and how much I regret not seeing more of him.Anyone who has no seen this long saga should give it a whirl ..it really is very very good.

The Snow Goose (1971 TV Movie)
This vs the Re-make being filmed as I write
5 November 2004
I took my small kids to see the 1971 film and we all wept copiously. It was a wonderful movie.I note with trepidation the remake being filmed in LA right now with Billy Connoly and Olivier Martinez. Can OM possibly get anywhere near as good as Richard Harris ? OM is not noted for his ability to convey feelings one can empathise with.I hope I am wrong but most remakes are dreadful, including the Alfie one with Jude Law.Why not just re release this greatest masterpiece.? I had not thought about this movie for years but now recalling it I think it has to be up in my top 10.A gem for anyone between 2-102,even if it is essentially a kids story an somewhat heavily laden with saccharine.I do believe that black and white movies were an excellent vehicle for creating "moods".I miss the B/W movies. And dread my memory of this masterpiece taking a hit on the remake.

Oh No !!
28 October 2004
Tenesee Williams is marvelous, but this is really awful.I am a huge Mirren fan but she is miscast as an ageing fading "beauty".Olivier is' way too old at pushing 40 to be a young gigilo and I have real problems with his "acting" and not just in this movie.I have seen all his early French movies as well as his newer ventures into English. There is a harsh cold arrogance within him that yells male macho pig that lacks any depth or finer feelings. He seems always so stiff and unnatural, his acting is really wooden.( The scene where he lifts his hand to hit Helen/Karen had me in stitches ) The Santoro chap without uttering a word, was truly mesmerising and far more of a breathtaking hunk, one wonders what all the fuss over OM is really all about. The entire movie was wooden and forced.I truly loathed it.I am old enough to remember the original which was not that brilliant either, but knocked the socks of this sad re-make.I felt sorry for Mirren selling her huge talent up the river in this bilge and OM needs roles wherein he is and acts his 40 rather than this 'nonsense in this, and Unfaithful, of being a cheeky 23 year old which he patently is not.he looks his age.He seems very arrogant vain cold in all his movies..the French press call him the "Mannequin who wants to act".. which may be a bit harsh as they loathe him for his misogyinist treatment of their divine la Binoche..but grains of truth maybe.Given that I do admit as a TW fan this is the hardest story to get right on screen it seems..or maybe no-one can get the 'casting just right? Borrow it it is harmless viewing, but do not waste money buying DVD
