Superman Returns (2006)
i loved this
First off I have to admit that before seeing this movie I had not seen the original Christopher Reeves versions. Of course I knew the whole superman story but didn't know exactly where this film was continuing from.
That being said I still understood it and loved it. THe casting is brilliant and after having seen the original versions I can now compare them. The is no man who can play Clark Kent better then Christopher but Brandon is also very good - he plays superman and Clark the way Christopher used to play him, he looks like him too. There is not one moment during the film that I didn't like this guy - he's amazing.
Kevin Spacey is exceptional, much better than Gene Hackman and more like Michael Rosenbaum, who is in my opinion the best Lex Luthor ever. Kevin Sapcey is the funny, intelligent, uterlly evil and crazy in a logical kind of way Lex Luthor. He is brilliant especially in the scene on the boat with Lois.
And now to Lois Lane, I have to start by saying that Kate Bosworth is not my favourite actress but in this movie she is quite enjoyable - it must have something to do with her hair - i prefer her this way. Her love to her son shines through and I don't care that people said she looks too young - for me she makes a good Lois and I look forward to seeing her in the sequel.
I especially loved the Superman/Lois flying scene and the scene where Lois discovers the true identity of her son's father.
Great movie!! GO see it!!!
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
good movie
For those who didn't read the book this movie will be too fast, and will leave them with many unanswered questions. But for me, I read all the books, it's OK. OF course there are many left-out scenes but the director manages to pass past this. The movie is full of great scenes and great acting.
I'll start by Emma Watson who even though had many parts of her character cut out of the movie does a great job. Her Yule Ball scene is magnificent and I could understand perfectly how happy she was that someone noticed her and then how disappointed she was in the end when Ron ruined it. In her scenes with Daniel Radcliffe their chemistry ignites the screen and this is mostly thanks to her. Her great way of showing what Hermione is feeling leads to a more understanding of her character for those who didn't read the book - it's obvious how much she cares for Harry and that I think is very important to the plot in general.
There were other great scenes - all the tasks and the graveyard, and even the light ones like when the Weasley twins try to put theri name in the goblet. The part where Harry brings back Cedric's body is very emotional. And therefore the film succeeds in bringing out the right tone for what is going to happen.
Great ending too - Hermione's 'everything is going to change' says it all.
All in all good movie.
Oliver Twist (2005)
good version
First of all I'd like to say that the scenery, clothes, sets etc where amazing and put you immediately in the right atmosphere. The acting was really good and it all adds up to a good movie. What put me off was the music. Being a huge fan of the musical version I was all the time expecting a song to come up... this was very close to the original version in many ways but I always felt a slight unconscious disappointment when the songs didn't show up. The songs where such a huge part of the original one that they completed it.
Roman Polanski did manage to fill the void in most of the parts. And he did this with the help of the actors. I did find Fagin very good even if I found it difficult to understand him at times. The artful dodger was great!!! But my favorite one for sure was Bill Sykes, I was honestly terrified of him (and his dog...)!!! I was a bit disappointed in Nancy... I found her a bit too young amongst other things. All in all good movie, I strongly suggest it to those who unlike me don't have the musical version imprinted in their minds.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
Fantastic!
I just saw this movie and I have to say that it was all that I have imagined.
Wonderful re-arranged score by Lloyd Webber fitted perfectly with Shumacher's film. The sets were amazing... especially the phantom's lair.
I particularly liked the transformation from 'present' to past in the re-make of the opera house and the notes/prima donna scene, but even he others were very good.
The drawback? The lipsinging - Emmy and Gerard were not in time with the music and sometimes seemed too artificial - it made me want to close my eyes so that nothing would interfere in my listening to the music. On the other hand Patrick was fantastic and so was Minnie driver - even if it wasn't her doing the vocals- her performance of Carlotta was great!!!
Lastly, the new song Learn to be Lonely was brilliant.
The result is what you should expect from a Lloyd Webber production - a masterpiece.
Twister (1996)
Amazing!
I've read some of the comments and found that they where negative ones, but since I liked the film I wanted to give my opinion. First thing the special effects are amazing (especially the one with the cow!!). The plot was unusual but interesting. But it is the extent to which we get to know the characters that gave the film depth and made it worth seeing!!!
