Watermark (2003)
7/10
unbelievable performances
29 April 2004
The cast of Watermark all deliver great performances. In a film with little dialogue, it's exciting to see a group of actors bringing such depth to their performances. Jai Koutrae, being present in almost every scene, exudes emotion. Watermark is just amazing for its really strong performances. In an interview, the cast said they worked a lot with the director in rehearsals on the methods of unspoken communication and you can see the results in the finished film. Another aspect of the film that sets it apart is the way in which the characters' emotions are drawn out through the visual imagery. It's rare to achieve such heights in feeling without recourse to the spoken word. The water almost becomes another silent but powerful character in the film. It envelops the characters.

Swimming Pool (2003)

the deep end

I have followed all of Francois Ozon's films and although this is lighter than Under The Sand it is a great thriller with lots of twists and turns. The performance of Charlotte Rampling is faultless and she exudes a smoldering sexuality that is rare in a established actor. It is a fantastic film.

too violent
13 January 2004
This film is so violent. In the opening sequence the amount of violence is too extreme with so little integrity. David Caesar seems to like films where everyone is threatened and seems to think its fine to use meaningless violence as entertainment. It also portrays Australians as complete idiots.

no interesting story
13 January 2004
All the actors in this film seem bored. They are not really interested in their roles and the dialogue is all delivered in monotone. It's a problem because I think the basic idea for the film is really very sound. I suppose it's just bad direction which leaves the actors drifting.

Enjoyable film with a great group of actors
11 January 2004
I enjoyed this film - it's great to see these classic actors in great roles. It's probably more aimed at the older than younger audience - but there's nothing wrong with that. I thought the comedy worked well, as did the sparks. I'd recommend it (especially to my mother).

It's a bit like Shrek

It's a bit like Shrek. I went with my six year old daughter and I thought it was great entertainment for kids. It really is what Disney has been really good at. I thought that most of the adults enjoyed it as much as the kids!

it has some good moments
11 January 2004
Some of the fight scenes are awesome. The digital effects are pretty good however there are a few problems. It comes off a classic fight story and yet it ends with a whimper. The ending is not really satisfactory but Tom does his best to save the day.

The Bank (2001)
7/10
It's unfortunately very real
11 January 2004
The Bank is a great story well told. It leaves you feeling that banks always take you for a ride. I thought David Wenham's character was so well played but the ending was a bit flat. I think that the ending did not reach any real level of interest for the audience
