Plane (2023)
This Film Took Me By Surprise, In A Good Way!
Whenever there is a film starring Gerard Butler in the lead, you automatically think that it is going to be a leave-your-brain-at-home-action bonanza. I thought Plane would be no different, especially when I viewed the trailer. But yet again, I was surprised with the warm reception the film got and on Monday, I made it a point to go and watch this film. Suffice to say, just like the rest, I was surprised and impressed as well. Plane isn't just an action film. It is a thriller as well and all in all a good entertainer.
Of course I am not giving away any spoilers but from what the trailer shows, it is a story centered around a Airplane Pilot Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) and what unfolds on new year's eve with him and his passengers and crew. The 1st half of the film is a pure thrill ride and it keeps you glued to your seat, although you know what is going to happen, you still want to see it unfold. You might think that the 2nd half of the film is gonna be a Rambo-like film but actually it isn't which is a good thing and honestly a great approach to a predictable plot.
Performance wise, of course it is Gerard Butler who is the star of the show, since the entire story revolves around his character.
After him it is Mike Colter who has done a good job although, he doesn't have much to do accept beat up the bad guys.
The Supporting cast and do their adequate best in their respective roles.
Charles Cumming and J. P. Davis who have written the script should be acknowledged because Plane is a film you go in expecting the same-old, same-old action madness but you come out satisfied because it isn't that.
Director Jean-François Richet has done a good job 'merging' two genres into one. Kudos to him for this attempt and waiting to see more from him.
In conclusion, Plane is a good entertainer because it tries to be different and for that I give it accolades. Go for it if you like Pure-Popcorn-Entertainment.
M3GAN (2022)
Child's Play For Gen Z ...
I was very surprised that M3ghan had taken a very big opening and also was highly reviewed because the film was released in January which is also called Dumpuary in Hollywood as all the films which no one will see are released during this time. But all the ratings and reviews really made me inclined to watch this film as I wanted to know what the fuss was all about and I must say, I wasn't disappointed but earnestly, I wasn't blown away either. M3ghan is a good film but not a great film.
The story and premise are very much like Child's Play. In fact if you have seen Child's Play then you will surely identify many references given to that film in M3ghan. I can say, it's a love letter to Child's Play.
Of course by now, everyone knows the story of the film through the trailers. It is about an android doll which goes 'dark side' on it's creator and what not. When you see the trailer, you expect the plot to start very soon but in fact, it takes a while before the story picks up. And when it does, it has moments of thrills and excitement. For me, M3ghan isn't a horror film but more like a Thriller.
Blumhouse has already made a fortune with this film with it's PG-13 rating which I believe was a smart move 'cause Horror films are mostly rated R and the ones which are rated PG-13 always fall short. But M3ghan is good in it's PG-13 element.
Performance wise Allison Williams does a very good job and after 'M3ghan' it is her who rides the film on her shoulders.
Violet Mcgraw is also very impressive as she has a tough role to play and she delivers.
The supporting cast do their bit but it is Ronny Chieng who stands out amongst them. His character might look and feel loud but he garners a lot of laughs.
Writers Akela Cooper and James Wan have a written a good story but somewhere I felt that the plot could had begin sooner and the thrills could had been placed a little closer together. I didn't get bored in the film but at times I did feel that there were places which were 'plain' in the film.
Director Gerard Johnstone has done a good job with the treatment of the film. The film has a mood especially when it comes to the scenes of M3ghan. One always feels that Meghan is continuously watching you, from within the darkness.
In conclusion, M3ghan for me was a good film. Not great not bad. Just good enough. Give it a shot. You will like the thrills.
The Pale Blue Eye (2022)
A Slow-Paced Mystery With Amazing Visuals & Performances
The Pale Blue Eye will surely captivate you for it's historic setting and grim visuals. The film has maintained the dark atmosphere which is required in a story like this. There is a sense of emptiness and isolation which the film keeps you in.
The film starts of with a very fast-paced and sophisticated story but I felt that somewhere in the 2nd half, the film does drop and it becomes more about character development and the main story (the murder mystery) takes a back seat.
But it is the end that truly is a shocker and the best part of the film. I love stories which make me think and second guess the characters but I myself was surprised with the twist in the end. It was truly very-well played out.
Performance wise of course it is Christian Bale who scores the most! His presence is captivating and he keeps you hooked in the film as the film rides on his shoulders. Please do notice his body language as there are scenes in which his silence and stares are doing most of the talking. He is truly one of the best of our generation.
Harry Melling who plays Edgar Allan Poe is also someone who should be brought into notice as he is remarkable in the film. His conviction to his character can be seen in every frame. Definitely an actor to watch out for.
The supporting cast are good in their respective roles and you can see that everyone has given their best in the scenes they appear.
The Pale Blue Eye is a murder mystery, no doubt about that but it is also a visual treat. So the crew should also be mentioned for their fine work to detail.
From the locations, to the Costumes and Art Design, everything feels authentic and all of these things add more feel to the story.
A special shout-out to the Cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi for creating a sense of darkness and grim in almost every frame. The blue tone which has been used creates the sense of dread which adds another layer to the story.
In conclusion, The Pale Blue Eye is a well-made film with great performances and visuals. If you are a fan of murder mysteries and thrillers then I would surely recommend you watching this film at least once. It's slow-paced but if you have the patience, the pay-off in the end is truly worth it's 130mins Run time.
The Menu (2022)
A New Take On Horror. Very Well-Made.
This movie really did surprise me. The trailer did look interesting and I was excited to see this film and start guessing what the plot was going to be. For me, when you mix food with horror, my direct response was that it could be about cannibalism but oh-boy oh-boy. Did this film surprise me!
Of course I am not going to give any spoilers but all I can say is that this film is surely worth the watch. Not only is it visually pleasing to see those exquisite dishes but it is also a film which keeps you guessing.
It is surely a new take on the horror genre and for me, you can even call this film a Thriller with it's suspense and twist and turns.
I will surely recommend this film to all who love Horrors and Thrillers.
Performance wise, Ralph Fiennes steals the show with his mesmerizing screen presence. He is truly the star of the film.
Nicolas Hault does his best with the role that he is given and doesn't disappoint. Al though somewhere I felt his character wasn't dealt with the arc it was required.
Anya Taylor-Joy is a Bona fide star in the making and with the choices of films and shows that she is doing, she is surely going to the top.
I honestly even liked the Supporting cast and of course amongst them it is John Leguizamo who stands out.
A special shot out to the Cinematographer Peter Deming for all those amazing visuals of the food items shown in the film. It felt like I was actually watching a food channel show and was tempted to try out those amazing items as well!
In conclusion, The Menu is surely worth the watch as it is has an amazing script and earnest performances!
Treason (2022)
It Tried It's Best To Be A Good Thriller ...
I was very intrigued when I saw the trailer of this show as I am a big fan of spy-thrillers. To some extent, the show is trying it's best to keep you glued. It is a limited series, so maybe to some level, that does work for the show. Honestly, there are parts of the show which are interesting and then, there are parts which are too predictable. I like guessing who the main culprit is of any suspense show or film but with this show, it was all too obvious. At least for me.
There is an undertone of rush and emergency to the plot but I wasn't hooked to watch all the 5 Episodes back to back. It wasn't a binge watch for me. It was more like, "I will watch an episode when I am walking on the treadmill and will wait patiently for the plot to unravel."
The weirdest thing for me was the sudden 'twist' which comes in the last episode. I mean, I don't know what the writer/s were thinking of putting that. That 'twist' or 'shocker' actually dampens the plot and story in the end and you keep thinking, "Was that even necessary? I mean, what good did that too to the story?"
Overall, since it is only 5 episodes, I will give it a 50-50 inclination towards a recommendation. The script is weak 'cause it doesn't keep you hooked. In spy-thrillers like these which deal with a level of second-guessing and espionage, you want a script which is super-excited and well written. Jack Ryan Season 3 is the best example in recent times of how well a Spy-Thriller can be and that show had more episodes!
Performance wise, I think all did their part with conviction. I am a man of Charlie Cox 'cause he is an awesome Daredevil, so I know I am going to be bias towards him.
Olga Kurylenko as the mysterious Ex-Lover/Russian Spy is good as well but it is Oona Chaplin who scores the most in this show. Not is she astoundingly beautiful but she also captivates you in her performance and she has the most layers to show. She is the one you will surely notice who stands out as the best.
In conclusion, this show could had been better but somewhere it does fall short.
Projapati (2022)
A Must-See Beautiful Film ...
This is truly a beautiful film. A must-watch 'cause it is about the love between a father and his son and also about love and romance. The film has a perfect balance between all of our human emotions. If the 1st half makes you laugh, then the 2nd half makes you cry. There are beautiful moments in the 1st half itself which make you cry and touch the right chord.
I genuinely loved the film.
Out of the 3 songs in the film, the 1st song is pure melody and yet again hits you in the heart 'cause it is about a son telling his dad that his father is truly his hero. I think we all can mostly relate to that.
Performance wise it is the Living Legend Mithun Chakraborty who is the Star of the film! He carries the entire film on his shoulders and the more you are in awe of him as an actor in this film, the more it is less. He is truly brilliant in every frame. Whether it is comedy or heart-break, the maestro of talent proves yet again why he is one of the finest actors in the world!
After Mithun Chakraborty, it is Kharaj Mukherjee who is just excellent in the film. His comic timing is out-standing and he makes you laugh your guts out whenever he comes on screen.
Even Dev was very good in the film and his chemistry with Mithun Chakraborty is wonderful and their bond of father and son intensifies the relationship.
All in all, everyone in the film is good because the story is so sweet and touching.
My special shout-out to the director of the film, Avijit Sen for showing us such a beautiful story.
This is truly a lovely, feel-good family entertainer which shouldn't be missed.
Jack Ryan (2018)
Season 3 Is The Best Season So Far!
If you are a fan of spy and espionage thrillers then Jack Ryan Season 3 is for you!
This is by far the best season of the series and I am so looking forward to season 4! You might think in the initial episodes that this might be a Slow-Burn Show which picks up post Episode 4 but this show isn't a slow burn at all.
It's gripping from the initial episodes itself and it hooks you till the very end. This is a Spy-Thriller at it's best! These are 8 Episodes you would surely binge watch!
Performance wise, I think everyone has done a fab job. All the actors have given their utmost best and their conviction to character can be seen in every frame. Of course John is the top favourite for all but for me, it is James Cosmo (Luka Gocharov) who stands out. He is definitely an actor to watch out for!
In conclusion, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Season 3 proves yet again that the main Hero and Star is the SCRIPT. This is truly one of the best shows of 2022.
