The Outcast (1954)
A well-done movie, I was surprised
I saw this movie on the Westerns Channel and didn't expect much from it. But I was pleasantly surprised as it was well directed, the staging was impressive, the script was thorough and had an intriguing plot. The exterior shots were gorgeous (wonderful country, might have been Wyoming but probably the back lot somewhere.) While only John Derek was truly handsome, the cast selection and action created by the supporting cast makes this movie worth watching. The only bad thing was, Bob Steele shot a man in the back. I was horrified, having seen so many of his movies where he was the good guy. A complete change of character for him. See it.
The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954)
Good war movie
I have seen this movie several times and have it in my DVD collection. It is a good statement about the futility of war, lack of supplies to maintain it, and the demonstration of the lessons learned in the Korean war that were carried into the Viet Nam war. Specifically, never make more the one pass at the target (get in and get out), and the need for accurate intelligence. One of the saddest things is that the USS Savo Island (USS Oriskany) was sunk this month (June 2006) in the Caribbean off the coast of Florida to make it into a reef. What a waste of our tax dollars. I heard on Turner Classic Movies William Holden insisted the character of Harry Brubaker be killed at the end, rather than being saved, which would have been standard procedure for Hollywood in those days, because he believed in the futility of war also.
