A documentary gem
28 March 2004
It is a shame that this beautifully-shot little film only aired (once?) on the Animal network, but fortunately my kids alerted me.

This is an eye-opener when it comes to the history of horses in North America, the government slaughter campaign, and the big difference between the REAL Mustangs and the wild horses that we think of today. Great to know that these true mustangs still exist (thanks to a host of diverse and colorful real people still preserving them).

The letters of Frank Hopkins, read by Viggo Mortensen, are informative and reveal a man who really loved these horses and had a vision for their future.

Hope it comes out on DVD. A real documentary gem.

THE LORD OF THE REINS: a big screen must-see
28 March 2004
I agree with the last comment posted: this movie is far more than what Touchstone promoted it as and more layered than what even the good reviews give it credit for. Themes of prejudice, equality, sexism, and human perseverance quietly lay a foundation for the rousing action and adventure that is being advertised.

Man and horse in a survival conflict with nature is what hits one on a visceral level, and Viggo Mortensen and his remarkable mount draw you in. King Aragorn is now the Lord of the Reins.

Looking forward to the DVD and hoping for good extra features, but this one has to be seen on the big screen to experience.
