Napoleon (2023)
If Tommy Wiseau's The Room had Apple's marketing
We walked out of the theater halfway through. It was completely ridiculous. We had read it wasn't all that factual, which was a shame because the factual story makes for beautiful TV we thought. But worse than that, the film was just a bunch of seperate scenes in a row. Dramaturgically, it didn't work at all. Clichés and exposé and no build up whatsoever. Casting was dreadful as well and acting sub par. We are so disappointed because there is SO much in Napoleons life and the people around him that would make THE most beautiful film or series. Wish these folks would have just have left it alone. Hoping someone else with more sense for drama and love for all nuances that this story has, will give it another try.
Sanditon (2019)
A new story with all the elements you love about the familiar ones
After watching all the familiar period drama's in every thinkable adaption, I was thrilled to learn that there was another story which would feature Austen's superb character constellation and set up for drama, but with a story that wasn't yet set in stone. Andrew Davies never disappoints and so he manages to capture the essence of the drama and add on to it and continue all in style. Besides the great writing, both the longer archs and the seperate scenes, I really love the acting. What a great cast! The first season feels like it's brimming with potential for lots and lots more seasons with interesting stories and character development. There isn't one character I don't wish to see more of, and I can't wait to find out what will happen next in Sanditon!
Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2019)
Felt like a teen girls fanfiction
I'm inclined to agree with what others have said about this episode: too much cliches. It is by all means a filler/bottle episode, but that wouldn't necessarily have been a bad thing; it can work to build up the emotional stakes before the coming battle. But in this episode, as in the previous one and also even in season 7, everything was so on the nose! I mean, I challenge you to find one of Tyrion's lines in this episode that isn't explaining the subtext of the scene out loud. And all the 'funny' and 'anticipated' meet ups: We get it already! "Those characters do have history", and "it would be awkward for those characters to meet now under these circumstances". But by all means, make it awkward, make it painful, make everyone not get along (instead of just two extra's spitting on the ground). Make people have nothing to say to each other, make them unable to get over the history between them so fast. But no: all sources of conflict are smoothed over in mere seconds this season. What is left is a bunch of people that by no means should get along, even if it wasn't for the fact that they've been enemies for quite some time, just for the fact that they have not much in common. But in this episode, those people seem more like besties having a sleepover, rather than complex character with complex relationships on the verge of battle. Everything is just too sweet, too nice and neat and funny. It feels like a teen girl writing fanfiction, wanting all the bad things to be dealt with as quickly as possible, so everyone can get married and have babies and live happily ever after. While it may be heartwarming at moments, and while it made me laugh at certain points, it's not the quality I expect from GoT.
The Good Doctor: Quarantine (2018)
Just random drama
I just watched the anticipated mid season finale; while I already saw in the promo that it would be a little over the top dramatic, that isn't necessarily a bad thing for me, especially for a Christmas episode. But honestly, I feel like this was written by someone who has no understanding of human emotions. Not once did I get emotional. It is not because there was a lack of drama happening: One huge thing after another. But none of it touched me, as there was no build up, no moments to really feel the characters emotions. Just plain on the nose crying and screaming and panic. It was just a collection of scenes where all kind of things happened with no emotional connection from me as a viewer, with characters feeling and doing things that felt quite out of character for me, or at least I must have missed all the clues as to what that character was feeling over the previous episodes. And then there was a lot of noise and a lot of drama going on. So basically, if the goal of this episode was to make me relate to autistic people they should get an A+ because I didn't understand any character or their emotions, and became increasingly annoyed by the noise and drama overkill.
