Reviews
Ghoul (2012)
For those of you who want answers
This movie is aimed at a tame audience, but has taken from a much less tame story.
So I'm essentially writing this review so that people who feel closure is important and do not have the time to actually read the novel. I suggest you go to the Ghoul novel wikipedia page and read the plot. I promise closure...and also a little sadness.
But in the whole of it I found the movie to be very watchable, while a lot of questions were left open, and the ending was abrupt, the movie throughout was an entertaining experience
I was happy with the acting, I may be alone but I believe the characters (Especially Timmy and Barry) to be placed perfectly in what it was obviously asked of them to play
Rurôni Kenshin: Meiji kenkaku romantan (2012)
Anime Fans
As a long time massive fan of the Rurouni Kenshin tales of the Meiji anime, so massive in fact that it has reached the sad point of owning replica swords and every scrap of footage possible, I have to say I was really happy.
Sure there are a lot of adaptations out there that try too hard to make a photocopy the original, or even try to change it completely. Rurouni Kenshin has not done either of these, but has instead taken main points of an early arc and certain areas of later ones in order to introduce you to a lot of characters while managing to encompass the overall point of the series.
Okay so assuming Anime fans are reading this, I want to point out that the fighters that fight for Kanryu are not of the Oniwabanshū clan (an assumption made due to them working for Kanryu, the mask and facial scar), but instead the characters are of the Six Comrades brought together by Tomoe's brother (I wont ruin the Samurai X OVA series for you if your unaware who Tomoe is).
That aside, I'll finish this up in stating that the way everything was assembled was very well done from this anime fan's perspective. And the use of Jinei (Kurogasa) as the final arch villain was an excellent choice as I always believed he was more major than was given credit for.
The Tunnel (2011)
Why to watch? Why not to watch? That is the question
This movie is Blair witch meets the Descent plus one in their respective categories.
Blair's plot had a lot more twists to a chilling ending (depending on who you talk to to) but the camera footage was very unstable. The Tunnel rectifies this problem, although in a running scene the camera does stare at feet, in talking shots the movement is little if not on a tripod. A feature that made this movie much easier to watch.
As for the tunnel's plot, I wouldn't say it was the most en-genius or original idea, but it was all put together very well. The depth of the characters allows a viewer to believe these are real people. Whether they be conceited or fun.
Naturally they move along the lines of 'this actually happened', but that's because it's the genre. They know that nobody actually believes that it really has. Unless a giant alien attacked America a few years ago...did it? No of course not Clover believers. So its OK to credit the actors to whom I think played their parts well.
My recommendation is that you watch it. Don't expect anything like Blair witch. And lastly don't expect to be too scared (Unless you like the 'it's dark....wait for it....aaaand....scare' style horror.) Watch it for the value of cinema, it's a job well done.
The Shrine (2010)
Seven Stars
Now I'm not sure if it's because i had just come off watching 'Alice in Murderland' but this movie was really enjoyable.
Initially I had high hopes for the movie, having read a few reviews that gave it very high marks. Naturally as with most movies you go into with high hopes, the first ten to fifteen minutes let me down. I began to expect this was going to be a typical kill'em off sudden shock without the shock horror flick that happens to be set in Poland. To add to this I was freaking out to the point of looking up subtitle information because the Polish language has no subs...which I must thank a reviewer here that allowed me to know they don't exist, and they add nothing to the plot if they did.
At that end, my worries stopped and the movie was over. Sound weird? What i mean to say is that at a certain point in the movie, I became engrossed in what was happening that I barely realized that the movie had been running for ninety minutes already. With a slight exception to one costume design, there are little to no complaints I have about this movie. It gave the feeling of originality, yes similar stories have been used, but not in the same way, to the same end.
Overall I only gave this movie a seven because of the large portion of self interpretation of actors feelings when the 'Polish' spoke. Had the movie been entirely in English however the realism of the movie would have been shirked which would have hurt a great factor of this movie. So all in all, I highly recommend watching it, especially for those who enjoy movies of the genre. Go into it without high hopes or expecting to see subs and I can almost promise you will review this above 8.
