Lucky Kabootar (2014)
A total disaster!
Lucky Kabootar is about Lucky (Eijaz Khan) who is a salesman in a tractor selling company in spite of graduating in B.Sc. Agriculture. He fantasizes about Kamana aka Kammo aka Gulabo (Shradha Das) but ends up marrying the girl-next-door Lakshmi (Kulraj Randhawa).
Even after marriage, he still fantasizes about Kammo. Rather the whole Luckypur is behind Kammo, but what was so special about Kammo
I could not figure out. Lucky has excuses of 'Hath Tang hai' always for not meeting Lakshmi's needs. Another character is Sunny Paji (Ravi Kissen), brother of Kammo and Dabangg of Luckypur with whom Billo (Madhavi Sharma) is madly in love. Then an accident leads Lucky to believe that his wife is dead. Instead of mourning her death, he falls into Kammo's arms. Turns out, he is not that lucky.
The film is a total mess from start to end. The writers tried to add a lot of vulgar dialogues in between as it's the latest trend since Grand Masti's success. The film takes off to a different level in stupidity after the accident plot wist. Another annoying factor of the movie was that the supporting cast was too weak and the character development was very poor. There is a character named Sexy Baba in the film played by Sanjay Mishra who is a complete disaster and will annoy you with his screen presence. There is nothing much to talk about the acting performance of the lead actor Eijaz Khan or the other casts. The movie is a complete failure even for those who enjoy vulgar jokes and trashy dialogues.
The film was touted to be a romantic-comedy but but there was neither comedy nor romance.
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014)
It is a tired, hackneyed story with zero originality!
I just returned home after watching Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. I decided to watch this film since the theater close to my home had no early morning shows for Dawn of the Planet of the apes. Ah boy wasn't that a mistake from my part? Don't judge me, I'm not one of those who writes crap about Bollywood films, I genuinely like Bollywood films. But when I watch overly-clichéd films like these, I make sure to let other people know about it.
It's not a bad movie but it's not good either. Is it worth watchable? Sure, if you have been enjoying watching all the clichéd romantic films Dharma productions has been slapping on us then, why not. But do read my review below.
So to start with, let me clear out one thing, which may or may not affect your decision in going for the film, that the plot isn't original. Hell, it's not even 30% original. It is an amalgamation of clichéd romantic films we have been watching in Big screens for last 20- 30 years! The Punjabi family, the big fat wedding, the forced marriage angle, fun-loving out spoken heroine(Alia in and as Kareena Kapoor of Jab We Met), to be bride falls in love with a Desi munda, desi munda going to meet the girl's family to convince for the wedding... I mean, whats up Bollywood? You have been loading us with the same BS story-line for the last two decades, the only difference is the film titles and character backgrounds.
The plot is predictable(well, surprise). You will be able to sense the climax from the time you sit for the second-half. This is a complete failure from the part of writing department. The dialogues are way too cheesy.
I think director made this film for those who is still in love with the Raj-Simran of DDLJ. This film is said to be a tribute to DDLJ, but it feels more like an unofficial remake with a few plot changes here and there. I wont go deep into that as I think I have said enough about the plot originality in the above para.
The only positive thing about the movie is the chemistry of the lead actors, which is superb. They both looked good together as they gelled perfectly on-screen. In a way it feels that their awesome on-screen chemistry went in vain due to such lousy, half-baked script.
But wait before loading all the criticism on script writer, save a bit for the *acting performance* of lead actors too. Sure, they both look good together and they both have fair-share of good moments together on- screen too, but both have been poor individually.
At least in my eyes Alia has come a long way -- from four months of liking her as a decent actress to considering her as an average actress who got a chance in the industry due to her father's connections. She tries too hard to be like Kareena Kapoor in the film. I would have appreciated her if she even did 50% of what Kareena did in Jab We Met.
When you watch Varun Dhawan in this film, you will be forced to think that how this guy got a chance in the industry and why is he trying too hard to be funny. There are quiet a lot of scenes he has overacted. It's not something you can ignore. He should take things a bit easy and choose scripts more carefully.
HSKD is a calculated effort to cash in on the stardom of Alia and Varun among the youth audience by Karan Johar.
Pluses:
Lead-actor's on-screen chemistry Few fun moments
Minuses:
Overcooked clichés Non-existence of a proper script Cheesy dialogues Fat Punjabi dad
Overall verdict: It is a tired, hackneyed story with zero originality and zero life. Perhaps with an altered script and better writing team with same cast, this film could have worked.
Jurassic Park (1993)
A groundbreaking classic but there was no need for those Sequels!
Almost everyone knows the story, but for those that are clueless here is a summary. Archeologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) join Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), Gennaro (Martin Ferrero), and John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) in order to endorse Jurassic Park, an upcoming tourist attraction that houses live dinosaurs cloned from DNA found inside fossilized mosquito's.
Ian believes that these scientists, are in essence, playing God, and messing with things that shouldn't be messed with. No matter how hard they try to control the animals, life will find a way, as it always has before. Alan and Ellie find the dinosaurs quite stunning, but even they say they can't easily predict how it would be for humans to interact with dinosaurs. Pretty soon, they were right, and they are running for their lives.
My review: It has been over 2-3 years since I've last seen this and today I re-visited this timeless classic again. I never realized that there could be a movie that just never gets old and gets more and more exciting with every time you watch it. Steven Spielberg adapts the novel faithfully and brings the dinosaurs to life with amazing technology which still amazes me to this day, 20 years later. John William's score is still as unforgettable as ever, it's just a really beautiful and moving score that suits the movie perfectly.
True, the story may not be all that believable, but its a film for entertainment, not education. It is truly a classic and well worth adding to your film collection. The following sequels are not even worth mentioning but Jurassic Park, standing on its own, is as impressive today as it was all those years ago.
Spielberg spends the first half of the movie getting the viewer to let their mind go in the wonder of dinosaurs being alive. The second half of the film is when all the action takes place.
What I most enjoyed about the movie were the action sequences(duh!). I've seen hundreds of movies, yet my favorite scene of all time is the scene where the Tyrannosaur escapes and attack the cars. It's just so amazing and so iconic. The rain just adds a certain tone that draws you in, adding tons of tension; And when I see the T-Rex escaping through her fence and attacking the 2 children still gives me shivers.
Performance: My favorite individual performance in the film was that of Jeff Goldblum! He was just terrific, possibly one of his best roles as he too tends to be an acquired taste, as Dr. Ian Malcolm, a mathematician who warns right from the beginning of playing God.
Sam Neill was perfect for the role as Dino genius Dr. Allan Grant!
Laura Dern has also done well as Ellie Sattler.
Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards play Tim and Lexi Murphy, Hammond's grandkids. Oh my word! Both were terrific and truly capture the teen audience very well and have some really hair raising scenes.
Summary: The movie has an amazing story, riveting action and everything that makes an epic film amazing. All in all, the movie is quite solid. Audiences of all ages will love it, especially those with interest in science or dinosaurs. It might be frightening for some children!
The film is great fun from beginning to end and deserves to be up there with Jaws and King Kong as one of the all time great monster movies.
Verdict: A groundbreaking classic. (There was no need for Sequels tho!)
Note: I can point out many flaws but would care not to as its a movie to enjoy not to analyze! As I said before this film is for entertainment, not education! Timeless classic!
