The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Milestone for Gaming and Representation
This was an incredible portrayal of human beings in an apocalyptic scenario. With all other constricting aspects of society stripped away, we saw the most basic human needs play out, first from survival to companionship and purpose. "The Last of Us" was one of two games to make me cry in my twenty-some years of playing, and it's unsurprising that the series consequently manages to hit the same emotional heights, if not exceed those of the game.
I'm a huge fan of Nick Offerman, and I'm blown away by the versatility he's demonstrated especially in the last few years, but both Bill and Frank were lovingly portrayed. As a straight male myself, I was moved to tears to see the love between these characters and to question what I would do in their place. And my answer? I wouldn't do a thing differently. A spot of warmth and humanity against the backdrop of a harsh and unforgiving apocalypse, this episode was far from filler but a milestone in gaming television and in representation. Thank you to the writers, producers, and cast in producing this phenomenal episode of a stunning adaptation!
Hilarity for Charity (2018)
Spectacularly unfunny
As with many users reviewing on here, I'm a huge Seth Rogen fan and was optimistic for this charity event. Not even one of the skits or jokes landed, unfortunately, none of the comedians were especially amusing (some were especially annoying and unfunny), and Seth's dependence on penis jokes was unrelentingly disappointing and juvenile for someone who masters even the crassest situational comedy.
To boot, the animated portion of the show was just appalling. The special overall was a huge waste of time and marked the first time that I had ever used Netflix's "dislike" button. But, by goodness, if "Hilarity for Charity" didn't earn it.
Seinfeld: The Puerto Rican Day (1998)
Poorest cast and written episode
There's not much to say except that this is the worst-cast, poorest- written episode of "Seinfeld." All the logic-defying, mind-numbing moments of this episode really detract from the rest of this amazing season of "Seinfeld" (with the exception of "The Dealership"). The ludicrous story lines, the extraordinarily clunky actors playing the extras (i.e., the people under the bleachers with Elaine or the women in the theater) in conjunction with a terrible script really made for a sad penultimate episode of one the best shows on TV. My concerns don't lie within the offenses perceived by the episode, but how the once- skilled writing team of "Seinfeld" went from making hilarious quips and commentaries about everyday issues of life to this.
