Kisses and Caroms (2006)
If the movie "Clerks" had a sexy sibling, this would be it!
What a complete surprise this movie was. It's funny... poignant... and VERY sexy.
For his first film, Vince Rocca has delivered a great piece of entertainment... enough to make Kevin Smith jealous.
He has a solid cast, especially Nikki Stanzione, who I'm shocked not to have seen before this film. And Nichole Rayburn just sizzles on the screen... add that to some snappy dialogue, and you are in for a treat.
Also look for a great cameo from Ginger Lynn Allen... I really do think this woman has some great performances in her, no pun intended. I would love to see her in some larger roles.
And, the soundtrack is fantastic! Honestly, I would buy a CD with these songs on it in an instant. So, anyone affiliated with Kisses and Caroms, please release the music on cd, or tell us how to track those songs down.
Ghost of the Needle (2003)
This is what INDIE HORROR films should be! A must SEE!
I am a horror addict... I rent every horror film that comes out despite the fact that 99% of them are bad... often filled with poor acting, bad FX, and zero story development... Fortunate for all of us, GHOST OF THE NEEDLE is in the good 1%. This is what indie horror films should be like! Great story... great characters... and tons of scares! And man does it look GREAT! The thing that I love about films like Ghost of the Needle, is it's ability to take a fresh approach to both story and character development, while still having a lot of the traditional horror film elements that we all love. This film is definitely worth checking out and I am looking forward to future films from this team.
Fate (2003)
A pleasant surprise!
I rented this from Blockbuster last week, out of curiosity... Especially since I had not seen Lee Majors in anything for such a long time.
I have to say, this was a solid film. It had a completely original take on the serial killer genre... making it more personal then anything I've seen. Michael Pare' plays a former FED who has now taken a job as a Police Detective. He is joined by Philip Michael Thomas (where has this guy been) who plays his new partner. They have a history as they were both Federal Agents. While Pare' does a solid job, it's Thomas' weird (almost creepy) performance that gives their partnership spice. Add this to Lee Majors spectacularly creepy and messed up performance, and you have a whole lot of things to keep your interest.
While the film is far from perfect... some sound issues and a cliché or two... it is a fresh enough take on the serial killer genre to make it worth a rental. I think the director Ace Cruz has something to be proud of, and it would be nice to see what the guy could do with a real budget. I watch a ton of films every week (and pay a lot in rental fees), and many of the filmmakers / directors of the films I see are just going through the motions to get the film done... where Ace seems to have an actual vision.
Check it out!
The Ghosts of Edendale (2003)
Great Follow-Up to "The Last Broadcast"
A friend of mine managed to get a screener of this film. It's by Stefan Avalos, one of the creators of "The Last Broadcast". While still working on a very small budget, Avalos manages to inject some great scares in this super atmospheric Ghost Story. Other than the budget (and it still cost quite a bit more than Last Broadcast's $900), it is a complete departure from "The Last Broadcast", with a straight forward narrative driving it through some very freaky moments.
And they also pull off some AWESOME special fx. And I do mean awesome... freaky ghosts, inanimate objects growing faces, and a very scary... very dead cowboy.
For anyone who likes a good ghost story, or interested in the early history of Hollywood, this film is for you.
Also, just a side note on their DVD. It is easily one of the best dvds I've seen in a while... lots of extras, and we found a bunch of Easter Eggs, including one for a contest to win a trip to haunted Hollywood. Whoever did the DVD, GREAT JOB!
