Troll (2022)
Tutorial 1: making a basic monsterfilm
Oke if you've seen one you have seen them all! This Norwegian monster movie is the most basic monster movie I have ever seen.
A bit of Norwegian folklore, politics, a soldier and an archeologist stumble upon a giant Troll. They try to find it, stop it, destroy it and at last they ask it friendly to go away.
All tension building tricks we have seen at the Jurassic Park movies are used in this movie. I really dislike the way the troll is designed, it just looks to humanly!
The acting is not bad but certainly not excellent. The father of the main character Tiedemann has the best part and nails the crazy old man act. His daughter (the main character) does a decent job aswell.
Because of the beautiful Norwegian landscape the movie looks quite nice. But the story is much to obvious and the plot is weak. I warned you!
Day Shift (2022)
Slow and predictable
Oke I love Snoop and Fox, but Fox is an actor and Snoop is not. Oke Snoop looks and walks cool but his acting is terrible. Fox does a great job. He nails the action scenes and makes convincing conversation. The story has all the ingredients to have a fun action movie but the passing is to slow. The whole partner thing of the union played by Dave Franco is funny but takes a long time to develop. Dave plays his part very convincing by the way.
The evil vampires are sometimes very aggressive but in the key scenes they are to soft a die to easily. Like in the opening scenes Fox really struggles to kill just one vampire and in the end of the movie they are killed by the dozen with just few gunshots.
They try to explain to the audience that this is because there are 4 or 5 kinds of vampires, rating from weak new bees to uber vampires which are old and strong. But this whole concept does not feel right and works confusing.
I believe that the opening of the movie is strong but the end is a farce and predictable. Personally I'm getting tired of the cheesy happy endings but then again one can not expect different from a movie like this.
Conclusion: grab a popcorn and some drinks and enjoy this action movie, for it's just that.
Bankier van het verzet (2018)
Good story and acting, scripting and editing could be much better
This movie is not bad at all but it is very disappointing to see a good story with the best actors the Dutch have to offer, is downgraded by poor editing and scripting.
The story is solid. It's small, heroic and smart. In the movie the story is not kept simple enough. I believe it's hard to follow sometimes. It leaves to many question-marks in the start of the movie. At first I thought the bankers where guarding/saving the money of Jews which where put on transport so that they could safely get it back after the war. Then I understood the bankers where raising and loaning money to fund the resistance. The way they do this is smart but the audience is puzzled because it's not explained good enough in the movie. Eventually it becomes clear that the movie is not about the way they do it... but about the risk they take doing it.
The acting is great and the look and feel of the movie is so convincing that you really feel in Amsterdam of the 1940's. The shining wooden doors and table's, the buildings, streets, the snow and the props used are great.
The pace of the movie is a bit too quick if you ask me. Editing is messy sometimes and this has a negative affect on the tention build-up. Especially in the midsection of the movie where there is a great swapping trick.
The movie certainly is worth watching because it's beautifully filmed, casted and the story is strong.
