Billy the Kid (2022)
Head and shoulders above the rest...
I'm reviewing as a Western historian first and film aficionado second , so just to get that out of the way up front . This retelling shows how the long form of TV series can be vastly superior to the big screen versions of Wild West legends. Billy the Kid is a big part of the mythos of Western Americana. This is the first effort of which I'm aware to look at him and his short and violent life in depth. Obviously, liberties are taken with the known facts. That is a given with historical dramas and this one (season 1) sticks the landing. BTK was not a hero, anti-hero or Robin Hood character. He was a stone cold killer and a product of his times. For the real history, read Robert M. Utley's definitive biography, Billy the Kid: A Short and Violent Life.
